I remember some of the scariest driving on the German Autobahn - don't remember quite the speed, but maybe 80MPH, at night, in pouring rain, with little visibility.

Upon all their high speed, I'm willing to bet that they have less accidents than we do here in the states.

Yup..

The overall road traffic safety of German autobahns is comparable to that of other European highways. According to the statistics collected by the International Traffic Safety Data and Analysis Group,[9] there were 2.2 road user fatalities per billion vehicle kilometers on German autobahns in 2008. Neighboring countries with available data include Belgium (4.2 in 2007), the Netherlands (2.1 in 2009), Denmark (2.5), Austria (4.2), Switzerland (1.2), and France (1.8). Using the same statistic, 4.5 fatalities have occurred in the United States on motorways.
They have 1/2 the fatality rate.. although no mention of accidents.

Why anyone would buy a BMW coupe is beyond me. They are notorious for splitting in two during high speed wrap-around accidents.

I'm sure plenty of cars would suffer such damage at high rates of speed. I would not necessarily blame the BMW but rather the idiots that tend to own them,

I saw one wreck scene I won't forget. The old narrows bridge had a short section of undivided highway at either end. Somebody crossed over and hit a semi with a set of doubles head on, in a geo metro. We waited about an hour to get through.
There is the truck, and a ways behind it is the metro's engine, all by itself. At the time I thought it was a motorcycle accident. There was nothing to see that came off a car. It must have been wedged under the truck and scattered on the other side of it. I found out later it was a metro.

The autobahns in Germany are rediculous (most non-speed-restricted autobahns are 2 lanes in both directions and you have to be really careful when passing because that porsche a mile behind you can be driving at 3 times your speed) but the faster non-autobahn streets are even worse.

Most 2 lane roads between towns have a speed limit of 100 kmh (62 mph) and typical aggressive drivers will do 120 - 130 (75 - 80 mph) and pass slower vehicles as soon as it's physically possible. Unlike the Autobahns though, the roads between towns are mostly not designed for such speeds and will often have relatively sharp turns and altitude changes. I don't know why, but driving as fast as absolutely possible is also some sort of male-pride thing in Germany.

Try taking the taconic state parkway up in westchester or more north, or the thruway (rt 87) past the tappan zee bridge. probably the worst stretches of highway to drive on if you are a habitual speeder like me

Yeah, there's no way to speed on 87 or Palisades, both of which I've driven nearly every day for years. Even knowing the spots where the cops hide like I do, it is very hard to do much more than the posted speed limit.

I like the PIP police. They are very professional.

Basically any car will split in half at high speed impact with a narrow solid obstacle that's well rooted/mounted to the ground.

Just on that page I see Porsche, Mercedes, Veyron, Ferrari, Acura Integra, Audi, Taurus, Chevy, Maxima, etc.

And I don't think anyone keeps statistics on how many cars are split in half, which would be useless anyway because it's unreasonable to think that any car can be tossed sideways into a pole at 100+ and come out without epic damage. Actually when you think about it the car splitting in half actually gives the best chance of anyone surviving as it's even worse when a car just wraps around a pole and immediately crushes all of it's occupants into smashed bits. As for a vehicle hypothetically strong enough to not deform the passenger area in such conditions, one might ask Dale Earnhardt what the repercussions of a sudden extreme deceleration are, such as 100+ to zero in microseconds.

Some autobahn parts do not have speed restrictions. It is really something different driving there. I was driving there once with friends to see an autoshow. I looked into the rear view mirror and see an automobile coming at me at ridiculous speed. When the automobile passed, it looked like i was not driving at all while i was going 170km/h myself.

Now all automobiles are designed to have certain parts of the frame absorb impact energy. The front and the back mostly. Sideways almost non existent and the roof has certainly no ability to absorb any energy at all or guide impact energy away. As soon as an automobile comes of the ground, you have no way to control how the automobile will hit an obstacle. And the automobile will be either torn apart or compressed with you in it. This is not a design flaw. This is physics. Hit the automobile at the right spot and it will fold and tear like a piece of paper. Martial arts is similar where the kinetic energy of the opponent (Speed, weight and direction) is used to defeat the opponent.

I never understood the need for people to do these dangerous speeds on public roads. It's just not worth the risk just to get somewhere 5 minutes early.

I like to run about 75 on the Palisades or the 87, the Taconic or the Hutch. But I do it only when the weather is dry, not wet. And I know how my car handles, so I prepare properly for the turns. But if traffic is heavy, then I slow to the prevailing pace. And I do use an Escort to at least give some warning of a police trap.

You see wrecks like this when you are in police and fire Dept.

I was in Fire Dept in New York for 8 dog years.

One night got a call for car Vs Truck.

The car was probably doing 100 or faster and slammed head first into a diary truck. The diary truck had a pretty high ground clearance. You see where this is going?

There were two drunk gays in the front seat of this plymouth fury.

The car disintegrated very much like the german car.

I found one of the guys feet in das boot.

Where were all the little girls in the area going to get their diaries?
They probably had to resort to writing their innermost thoughts in plain old notebooks without tiny padlocks on them.
This is the true tragedy.

Those 5 minutes are the difference between being late and being on time 20 seconds early for work!
