I cannot get a good estimate of how far the engine flew out of the engine compartment. Crazy :Q

Sheesh, some of you guys think that driving too fast or like an idiot is worthy of the death penalty! The poor dude DIED! "He shouldn't have been driving so fast" is an inane thing to say now...

I've seen far too many innocent people have their lives taken away at the ignorance of all balls no brains dickhole drivers like this guy. Hopefully this was a one person accident and that was all that was lost. It could have easily been a family of 4 that he crashed into isntead of that tree.

My sympathy for him isn't all that high.

I don't think that's what it is - Audis, like VWs, have a special key that pops out, switchblade-style, from a large fob that contains the keyless entry controls. I think the fob just broke off, but what is left is the key. It is just really thick at its base because of the internal pivot in the fob.

Correct. If the plastic housing was to bust off the key of my VW, you would have exactly what you see in the pic.

Some quick math says that the forces involved in the accident, assuming the car was going 100kph / 62mph would be similar to having something weighing more than 8500 lbs, while being only a foot thick sitting on the side of your car.

edit: I assumed a uniform car 6 feet thick stopping a 3,000lbs tree. A real car isn't uniform, so the force would be even more at some points.

edit2: Assume a 62mph tree is hitting a stationary car. In order for the tree to be stopped in the ~6 foot width of the car, the average force the car has to exert is about 8500lbs.

looks like he went dodging trees while doing 60 and messed up just a tad.

EDIT>> Anyone else notice the near-bald tires ?

Evolve S60R 500hp

I think we're still talking about the steel cage volvos here....
volvo

Look at the curb weight of even the fastest Volvo, the s60r. That sucker is still toting a pretty hefty load of steel around.

That should be required reading for new drivers, along with pics of the people they extracted from that mess.

Seriously, if that wreck was to happen, there would be blood everywhere. Even the seatbelt couldn't keep the driver in one place in an accident like that. No way ho zay!

Judging from the deformation to the roof and the front driver side, I'm guessing the car was airborne when it hit the first tree, possibly tilted a bit forward and to the right.
Judging from the direction of the the door wrapped around the tree, the car hit the tree facing sideways almost perpendicular to the highway. In other words, the car ended up 90 degrees left... probably lost control, started to flip and hit a tree instead.
All speculation, but seems reasonable to me.

Damn bad accident :( I guess there's no/little blood cause the passengers probably flew away from the wreck during impact (this is pretty common with such crashes).

Except that the S60 scored the last in crash-test ratings amongst it's peers.

http://www.hwysafety.org/vehicle%5Fratings/ce/html/summary_midlux.htm

The Volvo safety factor isn't as hyped as it used to be. Once upon a time Volvos were certainly one of the safest cars. But in today's world many other exceed if not meet it easily. Time to put Volvo uber-safest to urban-myth folklore.

And seriously slamming a tree in middle with almost any car at speed is pretty much going to get the same results. BTW surprisingly the driver/occupants of that Audi A3 accident made thru fine with barely a bruise.

And of BTW that S60R Evolve is a tuner prepared special car, not factory production.

The road the car was coming down is straight. The first impact, which split the car, was the tree with the door wrapped around it. The car split there and 2 halves continued on.
The road was straight, as you can see in the picture. Which means no missed corner, no oversteer / understeer etc etc. It was also dry, thus no loss of control due to rain or hydroplaning.
The rate of speed was freaking FAST. The car had enough juice in it to hit a tree, shatter into two peices (Which is no small feat in and of itself) and then the remaining halves, particularly the backend, STILL had enough momentum to do signifigant damage upon the second impact with the tree, as can be see from the crushed bumper.

Ok, this isnt grandma out doin the speed limit here fellas. By the way, what kind of car is it?

I agree with this, you seem to have missed the fact, though, that he must have hit that tree so fast that it managed to sheer the engine from the gearbox and fling it through the engine bay and out in front of the car. thats quite a way for 1/2 ton hunk of metal to travel.

What!?!

The person who originally posted the pictures at the Audi World forum had a different report. The car was so mangled that the seatbelts don't even exist anymore. How can you say they made it with "barely a bruise?" (And what's under those white sheets?)
