SEATTLE (Reuters) - A strong earthquake struck Seattle on Wednesday at about 10:55 a.m. PST, rattling buildings and forcing the evacuation of high rise offices in parts of the downtown, witnesses said.

There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries in the quake that lasted 45 seconds. CBS radio said the quakes measured 6.2 and was centered about 30 miles from the city.

Windows were broken in some buildings. One witness told CNN the quake was strong enough to knock items off shelves, while another said the quake cracked some walls.

I haven't heard of any injuries yet. Let's hope everyone is OK.

Just heard that it was only 4.7 and the epicenter was 11 miles NE of Olympia.

Seemed stronger than that if it effected the whole NW.

The United States Geological Survey in Denver estimated that the epicenter was 8 miles south of Corvallis, Ore.
I wonder where they got that, when everybody else says the epicenter was in Washington.

Why was my thread locked? Down Town Seattle rocks! Riots, Earth Quakes what more can you want. Hearing a lot of sirens, thank goodness I am in a newer building!

USGS spokesman on KGW is now saying a 4.7 centered near Olympia, but I find that a little hard to believe. It felt like a 4.0 or stronger here in Portland... And from the damage they are showing in Seattle, it doesn't appear consistent with a 4.7.

All the news outlets are contradicting each other again... remind anyone of "Bush beats Gore, no wait, Gore beats... huh? What? OK, yeah, Bush wins!"

I'm a geologist and I rejected a job offer in Portland and another in Victoria B.C. just because the west coast is just due for a big one.

Thanks, that's nice to hear. :( I live in the Bay Area and was here for that 1989 7.1 Loma Prieta quake. I really don't want to go through another one of those. I live pretty close to the Hayward fault too.

Ever since I was a kid we have expected a 9. Hope this one doesn't trigger it.

Sorry I am in Seattle.

I'm sure the CNN execs are really loving the fact that they just laid off a ton of their web site staff. Even though it's only been 30 minutes it took them awhile to get something up on their site. They should have contingency plans for that sort of thing. You can still tune in to their live audio stream at least. I hope they digitize that Bill Gates video and put it on the web soon. I'm sure most of us are at work and don't have ready access to a TV to watch.

I felt it too, at the same time as Viper.

Vancouver, Canada here. I probably live near the epicenter...

It was a bit scary, considering that I'm on the 12th floor of a crappy 30-year-old apartment. The building was shaking like crazy. I was considering to run outside if the shaking continued.

I'm still alive though. Should get ready for school.

P.S. I am NOT walking anywhere near Chem lab buildings. :)
