The epicenter was 11 miles northeast of Olympia, 30 miles underground. Its a damn good thing that it was so deep underground or else the damage would have been much worse.

If you go to CNN.com you might still see a picture of a brick building that was cumbled. That building is just 10 blocks from me.

I just got my power back, and it was pretty scary, because I am only about 10 miles from the epicicenter. I live on the westside of Olympia and it was about 10 NNE from Olymia. They have actually upgraded it to about a 7.0 magnitude though. Only a few glass things fell from our bookshelves, but nothing else.

Anybody have a link to the video from inside of the Capitol building? I heard that one of the columns on near the dome was cracked and seperated.

this is what someone in my company said:

So, the Microsoft Legal Dept thought it would be fun to put all of their
pagers on vibrate and then call them all simultaniously eh? Someone
should really get those people under control.

Just saw on the news that they upgraded it to a 7.0. It's pretty significant to Northwesterners because the last big quake was in 1949 which regisitared at 7.1 (converted to modern scales as 8.0).

Cheers,

GoldenTiger...

I don't really know yet, none that I've seen. Of course I haven't been out of the parking lot yet, either.

juiio - Was it 30 miles or 30 feet?

The most extensive article I have seen so far today is from Portland's own KGW.com (NBC),

Breaking News: 7.0 Quake Causes Extensive Damage
February 28, 2001, 12:00 PM

By KGW Staff

An earthquake that rocked Portland and Western Washington, all the way to Seattle, has now been classified as a 7.0 quake.

It was centered 35 miles southwest of Seattle, 30 feet deep in the earth. It was felt all the way to Salt Lake City. It hit at 10:57 a.m. and lasted 20 to 30 seconds.

Nine people have been hospitalized in the Seattle area; all are in satisfactory condition.

Extensive building damage is reported in the downtown Seattle area. At least five buildings were damaged. Bricks tumbled onto sidewalks, streets, and cars. Windows are reported shattered. KGW affiliate KING-TV, flew over the scene of a building fire, where flames were cutting through the roof.

Jetliners bound for Seattle are being turned away. The control towers have been evacuated at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Boeing Field.

The tremor was recorded on videotape, during a presentation at Microsoft. The video shows the camera rattling and people rushing out of the building.

A large crack has been reported in the dome of the Washington State capitol, in Olympia.

Seattle Mayor Paul Schell said it's "too soon to tell" exactly how much damage there was. But so far, he says, there are no reports of serious injuries.

In the Portland area, items were reportedly knocked off shelves. The Multnomah County Courthouse was evacuated, along with other downtown government buildings. Many schools in Oregon and Washington were evacuated.

When the quake hit, the KGW building swayed and rolled.

Portland-Area Residents

It didn?t take long for Portland residents to figure out that the rocking and rolling they felt coming from the ground was an earthquake. Some were even on the phone with friends in Seattle when the rattling started.

Newslink: kgw.com viewers e-mail their quake experiences

Jay, a caller from Beaverton, said he was on the phone with a friend from Seattle when the quake struck.

?I could hear it actually,? Jay said. ?It sounded pretty violent. You could hear stuff falling of his wall, and he yelled, ?I gotta go.? It was probably, more than just 10 seconds later, we began to shake here in Beaverton? it was definitely rocking and rolling here.?

Portland resident Robert Tuck said he felt the quake while working on the 9th (top) floor of Montgomery Park.

?We had quite a bit of shaking, with blinds hitting the windows and ceiling pipes swaying. Many people took the emergency exits down to the parking lot, but the quake stopped shortly afterward. It felt like it lasted about 45 seconds or so, but some of that could have been after-shaking of the building.?

KGW viewer Kelsey Cole from Oregon City called to report her experience. She was watching television with her mother when it hit.

"I realize this is an earthquake, and I turned to my mom and she said the same thing while we were watching TV," Cold said by phone. "We felt it for about 15 to 30 seconds. It felt like it went longer than that. It was sometimes so gentle you really had to feel to get it," Cole said.

Advice from Earthquake Experts

Dennis Olmstead, of the United States Geological Survey, said there is no way to predict when or how many more tremors will be felt.

Centered in southwest Washington, the quake went for about 30 seconds in a rolling motion. He urged people to protect themselves from falling objects in buildings.

?If you?re outdoors, stay away from buildings or structures if you?re in the car,? he said. ?You should stay in the car. Normally, if you?re in the car, you won?t feel it.?

More Information

The seismology lab at the University of Washington records roughly 1,000 earthquakes per year in Oregon and Washington.

Few cause damage, but the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck today is among the strongest in Northwest history. Wednesday morning's quake came from 30 miles deep in the earth.

A magnitude 6.5 quake in 1965 and a magnitude 7.1 quake in 1949 caused extensive damage. Both quakes originated about 40 miles deep in the earth.

This morning?s quake was the strongest since a 5.1 magnitude tremor west of Olympia last summer.

The Portland and Seattle areas are a major earthquake zone, with many faults.

7.0 in seattle. And how about this, it was the same day that someone chalked up the campus with "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US." Coincidence?

I've never seen so many students jump under tables so fast in my life.

Just saw the news, and they said that an elevator shaft collapsed in the Olympia Hotel (no idea where that is even though I live in Olympia) and that 10 people are still unacounted for.
