Hmm, might get a launch PS4 from ebay

The PS4 is probably what I want too, but I'm not so excited about it that I have to have it on launch day. I think I'm going to wait for some reviews for games and the consoles themselves to come out before I make a final decision.

The pre-orders were gone fast for the PS4.

To play PS4 games? They are sold out everywhere.

I don't think every single unit is up for pre-sale.
Don't some stores also keep some for public?

And pre-orders may have only been the first allotted shipment. They may have more ready to ship earlier than anticipated and send them at same time as launch shipment - and shipments may be constant in that one week later, you can get one.

Sony will play it close to keep interest high, but I think this generation they have the easiest to manufacture PlayStation console ever, and have the assembling capability/contracts to do so.

Launching at the same time as the main competitor (Microsoft) has got to have them prepared to handle demand, even if they want to keep launch well under control without keeping excess quantity in stores. If they have too high of demand compared to their production capability, and can't refill shelves early enough, they risk losing sales to Microsoft if they have the manufacturing capability. Their staggering regional releases, so that should help them to do - and most regions for the PS4 actually launch after the Xbox One.

Same. I want, but... not THAT bad. I actually want to upgrade my GPU(s) in my PC first. 😀 Too expensive, but I do dream of high visual settings in spanned triple-monitor resolution 😀

I got the PS2 and PS3 on launch day. This one, I might wait just a little bit.

The companies try to sell all the pre-orders they are guaranteed. Anything extra is a bonus and those are usually limited IF they get them. There will be more that trickle in, but they usually sell out quickly when they get there.

They may, which will be nice. The main thing is that there are going to be places around the country (USA) that will simply have a short supply and not be able to meet the demand.

They won't be able to meet the demand. They will try, just like in the past, but not make it. The last console I recall seeing after launch in good supply was the SNES. Everything else was in short supply for some time no matter how hard they tried.

My replies are in bold.

The PS2 could not be found around here for about a year. The PS3 was a good 6 months.

A co-worker at the time of the PS2 release was offered $900 cash when he bought his by someone waiting in line and turned it down.

Short supply doesn't equal impossible to get, however.

I got a launch PS3 and sold it on ebay for a little profit, and I think it was only a week or two later had another one from a local best buy to replace it with.

I'm just saying, from my point of view, a little patience is worth the few extra hundred saved.

If you can score one for maybe $50 more, the patience trade-off might not be a big deal. If they are going for $200+ over MSRP, I'd personally wait.

Just stay on top of rumored inventory/shipments and get the freight dates of local stores. That's what I've always done for any item I've wanted that was also high in demand.

Where is "here"?

And what is "found"? I struggle to believe your location received NO shipments.
A trickle of incoming inventory is "being found." It doesn't need to be in piles of 100s of them to be considered available.
Is it as easy as walking in and buying a new movie? Not usually, not for launch consoles. But do a little bit of homework, you can get one. Most people just stumble into them when they get back released. If you know when to check, say, a specific morning or evening, you run the best chance of beating the normal person.

The PS2 could not be found in any store unless you wanted to sit in there. You could call to check on shipments and by the time you got there, the few they had gotten would be sold fast. You could not walk into any place around here and just see some lying on the shelf to buy. It was the same for the PS3, just for a shorter time.

I've been told pre-orders placed now will likely come in the new year. Only a small amount were guaranteed on launch day.

The launch lineup is extremely week. Just wait 2-4 weeks and they will probably have more.

The demand is more predictable and the supply larger this time around.

You snooze you lose...5minutes after the price was announced Amazon listed pre-orders on their site. I got one from there immediately. Two days later Gamestop was doing them locally along with best Buy, Walmart etc. There was no shortage of places to pre-order. If you waited this long to decide you want one, well that's all on you.

I assume you work at a retailer in the upper management position to know that no PS4s will be available outside of pre-order per your post in the thread that stated such?

The console looks great, but launch titles are weak. I'm not seein a lot of reason to pay over retail at launch. I think 6th months in ill start to be wowed by some exclusives.

Don't bother. In a week or two after launch, you'll be able to walk into any Walmart/Best Buy/Fry's/etc and walk out with a PS4. Its using an 18 month old CPU/GPU on a proven mature manufacturing process with a 5400rpm drive. Unless they colossally screw up, there's going be little, if any, shortage.

MS is the one with possible yield issues because they added the block of on-chip RAM to make up for slow DDR3. Sony went with a simpler pre-existing AMD design.

Is not having to (possibly) wait until January to pick up a PS4 really worth spending extra on? Catch up on games for the sytems you have, or watch some show on Netflix that you missed.

I figure day after launch is the best time to sell. The "my friends have one and I don't" mentality will be strong once its in people's hands.

As well as the weeks before Christmas assuming its still sold out by then.

Still haven't decided. I bought mine to keep but there won't be games for me for like 2 years. Might list it just to see, don't care either way.

I'm more excited right now by the 3DS and PS3.

2 years? Watch Dogs is Q1 2014... for now!

Also what is the PS3 bringing to the table?
