I am trying to work with just one monitor (rather than my dual monitor setup). The cost of a pair of these Hitachis is just more than I can bear. So, I will try to drop down to just one. Let us know how it does when you get it.

It shipped today, so there's a chance that I will get it Friday....assuming my wife is home to sign for it. May leave a note to leave it with a neighbor! :)

When Samsung puts out a similar panel, in a 19" or 20" 1600x1200 version, then we'll talk. Actually, screw talking. Then we'll run to dell.com and order for any price.

I guess I'm a bit underwhelmed. When the differences between that and a 40ms panel are just marginal by hypercritical gamerPC standards, well put it this way -- I'm not about to upgrade my current panel. And if FFD (and this sounds like FFD) is to live up to the hype, I should be prepared to do that.

I won't call this a big official review...but I've had a chance to play with the monitor for a few hours.....

The review at GamePC hit many points on the head....the screen is very crisp.....much better than the Planar 15" or Dell 15" LCD's that I currently or have had. The colors are very vivid and even at 1280 x 1024, the text is very crisp and readable. The bright whites do indeed have a hint of red which can be toned down via a little color tweaking. The bottom left of the screen is somewhat brighter than the rest of the screen, but not enough to notice unless you were staring at it like me.

I've scrolled white text on black and black text on white........and the results seemed to be almost exactly like a CRT (which I also did the same test.....along with the Dell 15" LCD...which showed much ghosting/blurring. Also, after a few hours of UT2k3 Demo....I can say that it's as good as my 17" Panasonic CRT.

The monitor does indeed seem smaller because of the small side enclosure.....and seems more like a square vs a rectangle. One other little quirk that I noticed is that the satin finish on the face seemed to reflect any light source enough to notice when viewing at an angle.

I haven't had any other 17" LCD's to compare....but all in all, I'm pretty darn happy with this unit. That's not to say that I wouldn't have been happy with another 17" LCD or even a cheaper 19" LCD (I hear that RAD-9's are on sale at Compusa for $599 after $100 rebate this weekend).

The unit is also very sleek and light. :)

That's all for now! :)

well, hey! Congrats on a spanking new toy. It certainly has to be up there with the best of any 17's, so you can't really go wrong there, can you? If its as good as your CRT, then its a whole lot better!

I ordered one of these to go with my new GF4 TI4600.. after reading all the reviews and such I can't wait. I even ordered 2nd day :) So it should be here on 11/11/02

Ya $660 shipped is a smidge expensive for a monitor, but considering I'm taking away the current 45lb 115w 17inch monster it will be well worth it.

Hi,

Sounds like a great monitor. I'm either going to get this one or the Dell 1900fp (samsung 191t). Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't get the dell for just $35 more? I'm not really a gamer. I'm mostly concerned with 2d and text in windows and other apps.

Thanks

Engineer,

Please go to this thread at Ars and see if you can perform the ghosting test that one member there developed. If you can, it'll be great if you can post your results there in that thread.

I downloaded the .AVI file and will bring the digital camera from work tomorrow to catch a few "on the fly" photos. I don't have a digital camera at home....the Olympus at work should be fine though...as I've taken photos of 4,000 RPM fans spinning and you could see the dust on each blade with no blur! :)

Will update later this weekend....but I will say this....I hate going over to my other monitors after using this one already! :)

If you're not a gamer I would certainly go for a 19" over a 17" for similar $$. In fact even if you are a gamer I would give it serious thought unless gaming is all you do. For apps, you just can't beat real estate and a 19" LCD is a joy to behold. All you have to do is read the gamerPC review to see that even a middle of the road current production LCD is quite acceptable for anything short of katy-bar-the-door gaming.

To take it one step further, I hear that the KDS RAD-9 is a solid 19" LCD and it will be $599 (after $100 MIR) at CompUSA starting Sunday.....:)

Very tempting to get one to replace my surfing PC in the bedroom! :D

Thanks Engineer. Many of us are waiting to see a CML174 in action. :)

Engineer,

Wow, that's a little surprising to me. Just to make sure, your shutter speed was at 1/250 sec right? If not, your exposure may be too long and the results may not be accurate.

Acutally, I can't set the shutter on this camera? :confusing; It's an Olympus D450 and has rated shutter of between 1/2sec and 1/1000 sec....but you don't get to choose the time. Maybe I'll make the room bright and see what happens. Brighter = less shutter...I think?

My digital camera is a Sony DSC-P50 and it also would not let you change the shuter directly. However, there are ways to change it indirectly. On the Sony, there's something called Exposure Value that I can change. Also, like you said, lighting can also change it. ISO is another. On my Sony, you can depress the shutter button to the 1st level and it'll tell you the shutter speed. If it says 250, I then depress it to the 2nd level to snap the pic. From you pics, it looks like the exposure time was too long as the pics were very bright.

Update: I couldn't adjust the camera so I decided to see whether the camera shutter was open too long, so I took photos of my 19" Samsung CRT and my Dell 15" LCD (25ms rating). The Dell showed 4 levels (out of the 5 possible) of serious ghosting.....which would indicate my shutter was open for quite a while. Even the CRT showed two levels (almost what the Hitachi showed....still hope! :) ) of ghosting so this would definitely indicate a shutter problem. Hopefully, someone with a faster shutter can take a few photos of this baby and let us all know!

Still hope! :D

Wow.

I've got a friend who wants to buy my 17" Sony off me for $75.. which is about what it's worth if you ask me. I'd love to replace it with an LCD since it's a lot better for your eyes and consumes less power. That's an expensive 17" LCD though :( If they had a 19" version out, and it was a bit cheaper.. I'd probably jump on it. Looks like I play the waiting game again..

wow the hitachi is awesome!! I just got it and hooked it up to my work computer with just the crappy analog cable and it's sweet! Cant wait to see how it looks at home with DVI!

Definitely worth the cash! No ghosting!

The only problem is the FAINT tinting of red but it goes away if you look at the screen head on instead of some odd angle. But even then it's something I can get used to. Glad I got this! HUGE difference from a CRT!

I have a 19 crt monitor right behind it the viewable area is a bit taller than crt but the width is just a smidge narrower. It looks huge to me and I've been using the 19inch at work for over a year and a half. I think a 19inch variation of this would be insane

<- very happy!

cant comment on DVDs, im still at work with it :D
