You have to admire the hubris of the people who traveled to paradise, looked around and said, "This place would be a lot better under an epic maelstrom of fiery death."

i've recently been on a ww3 kick, so i recommend the atomic cafe as a good starting point before moving on to the nuke porn trilogy trinity and beyond, nukes in space and atomic journeys - welcome to ground zero narrated by bill shatner, as well as bbc's nuclear secrets.

also:
on the beach, 1959 (gregory peck, ava gardner, fred astaire, not very good imo)
the war game, 1965 (excellent, documentary style, super realistic)
dr. strangelove, 1964 (no explanation necessary)
fail-safe, 1964 (2nd place to dr. strangelove through no fault of its own)

from the 80's there's
the day after (pretty good, so long kansas and steve guttenberg)
countdown to looking glass
by dawn's early light
world war iii

A Time-Lapse Map of Every Nuclear Explosion Since 1945 - pre-dates n. korea

I have always been been unaware that persons named Sarasota, Arkansas, or Nevada ever ran for the US presidency.

Oh well, I learn new things every day.

At what height from sea level was the bomb when it actually detonated?

able was on a tower 100 feet or so, and produced disappointing results. baker (in the picture) was a similar bomb lowered under water and it was much more destructive.

Oh wow, ok that does make sense then in the way it picked up the battleship. Any idea how deep underwater?

Able was an airdrop. Both bombs yielded 23kT. Both bombs would have killed roughly the same amount of people. Baker however, did more structural damage, and would have longer lasting local effects due to the height of the detonation. Able missed it's mark by about a half mile, which led to media disappointment. The scientists and military were happy, and went on to building bigger more effective bombs.

my mistake, able was dropped. there was considerable pressure to produce a bigger bang with baker. the unsatisfactory results were due to the ineffective use of the weapon (not the least of which was missing the target) rather than technological limitations. in addition to baker's closer proximity and greater kinetic energy transfer of water, the tons of falling water dealt considerable damage, not to mention the radioactive fog.

Impressive that they had that type of resolution back then?

you are parhaps confused, presidents names are not the only ones used for ship names

battleships are *almost* all states names.

carriers have various groups, alot are presidents, dod personal and naval officer names

Here's a colored version of the same photo...someone converted it from black/white to color.

No one converted anything. The navy filmed and photographed the entire test in high resolution high speed color. The navy essentially bought all the film on the planet at the time. Hollywood filming had to be suspended due to lack of film.

Film doesn't have a resolution. That's why you can always blow up old negatives. They can go back and re-scan old movies at 1080 resolution or even higher.

I would love to see the real color version then!
