Got back the results from my blood work yesterday. My cholesterol and LDL are high, at least according to the quack doctor. I'm on my way to pick up a pepperoni pizza. When I return, perhaps some of you can give some suggestions on how to lower my cholesterol?

Well, begin by putting a 'No' in front of your username ;)

Do exactly what you're doing. Don't listen to the Health and Fitness forum.

My total cholesterol was over 220 and my triglycerides (sp?) were over 1000. I stopped eating fried foods and switched to whole wheat for all carbs. Pretty much making those changes alone brought my cholesterol down to the 175 range and my triglycerides to the 250 range. I had onion rings or fries with every lunch, now I eat veggies or soup. Amazing what some small changes can do.

First thing to do is ask the Doc what his cholesterol is at. Then ask him what he's doing to lower his.

After you get him squirming, ask him why none of the so-called professionals that purport themselves to be experts in this regard can't seem to agree on what are good or bad levels.

Ask him why the good and bad numbers keep changing and why you should believe any of them.

Then, relax, kick back, eat and drink what you want. None of us is going to live forever, you included. They have to write a reason for your death on the death certificate and one thing works as well as the other.

Worry about more important things.

You are genetically prone to high cholesterol. Just as the diabetic must change their lifestyle, you must change yours if you want to live a healthy, long life.

Exercise regularly and religiously.

Severely limit or eliminate saturated fats altogether and confine your carbs to whole grains.

If you actually do these things and your cholesterol does not drop, you will probably be prescribed medication to lower your cholesterol.

Your health is in your hands and there is no quick fix. The meds ONLY work if you alter your lifestyle, so either way, it's time to change what you do and what you eat.

Look at it this way: Doing these things will not only make you healthier given your predisposed condition, but it will make you feel and look much better as well.

Don't sabatoge yourself. Get a workout plan and stick to it. Get a diet plan and stick to it.

I ate chicken wings and pizza as my two most frequent foods for over 20 years. Had my cholesterol tested a year ago: "wow, your cholesterol levels are beautiful." I'd like to thank my parents and grandparents for providing me with good genes. :)

On another note, I figured out last weekend that the most eggs I can use in one omelet is 7 or 8. A 12 egg cheese omelet (for 2 people) is out of the question as it turns brown before it ever cooks through. I use eggs from my own chickens, and I don't feed them cholesterol. Logically then, the eggs are cholesterol free :p

That has no logic behind it at all.

Once you go up to that many eggs I would suggest making a fritata. Start it off on the stove but then place it into the oven. I like to make a spinach fritata; start by sauteing whatever you want in the pan (garlic, onions, cilantro, bacon, etc), mix the spinach with eggs in a separate bowl and pour it in the pan you sauteed everything in. Place in oven after a few mins (until it sets up a bit) until done.

I try to eat healthy, but my goal isn't to be the healthiest body in the cemetery either, live a little ;)

some people say you can eat some good cholesterol to balance out the bad ones. I don't exactly understand how that works...

I volunteer at a running clinic on Sundays and I was speaking with one of the runners who had ben told by her doctor 3 months earlier that her cholesterol was off the charts. She has been running 2-3x per week in that 3 months since hearing the news and her cholesterol has dropped back into acceptable levels and is still improving.

She did modify her diet somewhat as well, but the doctor said the running played a major part in the turnaround.

So yeah, start running.

Diet and exercise can accomplish a lot but it might not make enough difference to bring it to safe levels. Depending on what your cholesterol is, you might benefit from a statin drug like lipitor, which is now available in generic form (i think). This definitely isn't a replacement for proper D+E but it definitely help on top of that.
