My wife got one and she's going to court to fight it herself. Personally, I think she's wasting her time but thought I'd ask to see if anyone here has any decent advice.

FWIW-She was turning right on red, which is legal in this state, and they say she didn't stop. There's even a video available online and I've seen it. It's pretty damning actually.

Can't wait to see the responses...

Edited-for amusing message title. :D

UPDATE: Well, she got back from court and they found her guilty so she has to pay the fine. She is going to traffic school to keep the points off her driving record though. So, basically it was a complete waste of time. She didn't have to pay any court fees either-to those of you who suggested that she might have to. :p

I never understood the point of fighting tickets. Speeding is against the law, auew we all do it, but we need to at least understand that if we get caught, well we have to pay the price, and thats the end of it. So pay the $250 or whatever and then its over.

It will end up costing more to fight it. Even if you win, it will cost more grief and probably more money in the end.

Erm I said speeding, but really meant traffic law violations in general.

Count to three. If she's not still stopped at the white line, she doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell.

Around here, the red light cameras are privately operated with the government getting 25% of the take, and no chance to fight it.

Wait what does speeding have to do with a red light ticket?

And to OP - damning towards her or the state?

If she didn't stop completely, then turn right, and it's clearly on video she doesn't have a chance.

Tell her to pay the ticket, stop fighting the inevitable, and come to a full stop next time before making a right at a red light. Probably not what she wants to hear but sometimes people don't want to hear the truth.

Expect her to spend four hours in a hot courtroom, and ending up with lackluster results.

I just spent 4 hours in court today, only to spend $389 bucks, which was more than the cost of a speeding ticket I got 8 years ago.

Toward her. I watched the video and it doesn't look like she stopped at all. She slowed down well after the white line but she never stopped.

Personally, I think she's screwed...and I thought that even before I saw the video. You can clearly see cars making left turns through the intersection and their movement is neither slowed down nor sped up through the entire video. You see the intersection before she enters the view of the camera and you see cars beginning to turn left (approaching from the left/right side road) and then you see her car come up to the light, slow past the white line but never stop. It's pretty clear that she didn't stop despite her insistence that she ALWAYS stops at red lights.

Pay ticket. My mom did exact same offence, video documented that she didn't stop, ticked ($75 paid), /thread

People often fight tickets simply because you get a free fine cut if you fight it, so why not?

Beats me...I guess she's expecting to find some magic way to beat the system.

No, she showed me the video just now. I didn't even know they had video evidence!

i didn't know you could access that stuff online, that's kinda neat. in a case like this, normally one would say "damn i got busted" and just pay the ticket. normally.

I say tell her to take some responsibility like an adult. I honestly don't know what grounds she would try to fight on. The judge will likely make her pay the maximum fine as well if she goes in there and pleads innocent when the video obviously shows her not stopping. Judges hate to be lied to and have their time wasted.

Well, if she doesn't fight it she pays the maximum fine anyway. If she goes to court she just wastes her time as well. I couldn't possibly care less about the judge's time.
