Not to mention who will pay for it?

Schools already have money issues and hiring some dropout for minimal wage is not what anyone would want in a school.
Nothing screams security like a fat guy with a gun sleeping by the entrance.

This guy broke through a window. Unless the guard happed to be at that window, how many guards would it take to secure the school.

What about other venues where children congregate? Churches, little league games, playgrounds, movie theaters, et al.

How long would it take for a guy w/semi-automatic weapon to mow down a dozen kids at a park with multiple soccer games?

so we gonna have an armed guard with M16 everywhere now? that puny 9mm aint gonna do justice againt those assault rifles mass murderers usually carry
armed guards at school, shopping malls, and off course dont forget cinemas.

that makes me feel so much safer already.
lets hope none of them so berserk and mow down those they sworn to protect.

in most of those venues the attacker faces the possibility of an armed civilian, something he doesn't at a school.

Except most of those places ban weapons and rightly so.

You can't stop maniacs like that with the hope of another person having a gun.

Hey NRA! How many video games did these people play?

BREAKING NEWS: http://bigstory.ap.org/article/da-4-dead-including-gunman-along-rural-pa-road

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A shooting along a rural road Friday left four people dead, including the gunman, and three state troopers injured, authorities said.

The shooting scene "extended over several miles" in Frankstown Township, about 70 miles west of Harrisburg, Blair County District Attorney Rich Consiglio said.

The dead were three men and one woman, Consiglio said. It wasn't immediately clear who killed the gunman.

The victims' identities weren't immediately released.

Three state troopers were also injured during the melee.

One trooper was shot in his bulletproof vest and escaped serious injury, a state police spokesman said.

A second trooper was struck by broken glass when his vehicle was fired on, and a third trooper was in a crash involving the gunman, Consiglio said.

The public is not at risk, Consiglio said. Nearby schools weren't placed on lockdown, township supervisor Mark Schroyer said.

"Pierre announced that former Rep. Asa Hutchison, R-Ark., will lead an NRA program that will develop a model security plan for schools that relies on armed volunteers."

It looks like they are looking for volunteers, so unpaid folks, although I am sure there will be some hidden costs. This means some old retired guy will be guarding your kids. I am not sure this is a great plan, but it is interesting idea. Retired police may be willing to volunteer and the thought that perhaps somebody armed is protecting the school may make people think twice.

Do you think a guy with a handgun taken by surprise by a guy with an assault rifle would have had a chance?

In theory he still should. Complacency would be the real problem. I wouldn't keep anyone on that job for more than 6 months at a time and he would need some sort of safe area with multiple exits and cameras with a rifle. Only carry his handgun for patrolling.

You could pretty effectively put 1-2 guards in.

Your beloved NRA blames the Newtown shootings on video games.

Since this thread has been moved from OT, I'll add some commentary:

The point of this thread is twofold:
1) Hoplophobes - The same logic you use to try to get guns banned has been used and will be used again to try to get video games censored.
2) Hoplophiles - The same organization you idolize because you think they are protecting your right to bear arms is the same organization that would happily lobby to take away your right to play video games if it meant one more firearm sale.
3) The left also wants to ban violent video games; HRC was a major player in that, as was Elizabeth Edwards.
4) The same organizations that want to ban guns will do so even if it makes us less safe, for they know that an armed man is a citizen whereas a disarmed man is a subject.

and you can stop him by taking the gun from the other person?
It's a well known fact that those who murder small children are otherwise extremely law-abiding and would never use illegal weapons, just as it is well known that the same federal government utterly unable or unwilling to stop millions of people from crossing the border can certainly stop guns from doing so.

This has nothing to do with guns and everything to do with control.

...
The left does? Or a few extremist wackos on the left do? Can I say the right thinks raped women should not be able to get an abortion?

Don't forget Obama - He cut out funding for school security by his control of the Government Accountability Office.

A hack will hack.

yeah, I mean criminals are renowned for their respect of the law and crazy people for their unwillingness to follow through on shit.

-snip-

So you're saying Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Edwards are "extremist wackos on the left"?

I'm not sure anyone on the right who believes that is equal in party prestige to HRC, but it's certainly fair to say a LOT of the right believes a woman should not be able to get an abortion for any reason other than saving her life - and if you're a hardline Catholic who believes the baby cannot go to Heaven unless it is baptized, you therefore probably believe that the baby must be born even if it kills the mother. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Catholic Church itself has abandoned that principle.) There's a valid principle behind it, too - the unborn child is innocent and deserves protection.

I don't agree with that point of view because it accords all rights to the unborn baby and none to the mother - which is doubly egregious in rape cases - but it's fair to say a lot of the right believes that. But my point was that the left believes in protecting us from ourselves at least as much as does the right, which is rather a different animal. You don't have to make a determination of whether a majority of either side wants to ban violent video games to make the point valid.
