The whole "God created the universe" thing bothers me...if the universe didn't exist, where was god before he created the universe? Where did he build it? What materials did he use for the creation? If there was nothing there...where was there?

When it comes to the possibility of God's existence, the Bible says that there are people who have seen sufficient evidence, but they have suppressed the truth about God.1 On the other hand, for those who want to know God if he is there, he says, "You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you."2 Before you look at the facts surrounding God's existence, ask yourself, If God does exist, would I want to know him? Here then, are some reasons to consider...

1. Does God exist? The complexity of our planet points to a deliberate Designer who not only created our universe, but sustains it today.
Many examples showing God's design could be given, possibly with no end. But here are a few:
<snip>
Fire an arrow at a wall, paint a target around it, and marvel at the accuracy of the hit.

Earth's "perfect" size and atmosphere, etc:
If Earth were like Mercury, it wouldn't support life. And indeed, Mercury does not support life. That doesn't say anything about Earth's environmental conditions. You might as well say, "If that wooden door were a frog, it wouldn't be a door, and it wouldn't be made out of wood." Yeah, no kidding. It's a useless statement.

If there was Earthlike life on Mercury, which thrived on water, and required an atmosphere of oxygen and nitrogen, then that'd raise some damn big red flags. Life can't develop in places which won't allow it to live. It's just not going to work out if a life form would somehow evolve survival requirements not present in its environment - and of course, it would never develop that in the first place. Boom, you're born! You require oxygen. Oxygen not found. Dead. So much for that.

Water...colorless, odorless and without taste, and yet no living thing can survive without it. Plants, animals and human beings consist mostly of water (about two-thirds of the human body is water). You'll see why the characteristics of water are uniquely suited to life: <snip>
Unusually high boiling point? Compared to what?
See the previous point. Water was present on Earth in abundance. It'd make sense for life forms to make use of an abundant resource. It's a hell of a lot easier to use something that's all over the place, and as stated, it's a versatile material. Not making use of it would be a poor survival option.
Unique surface tension? It's got polar molecules. Big deal.
Again, painting the target around the arrow.

The human brain...
Big flippin' deal. 3 billion years of biological evolution, and we want to reverse engineer it in a few centuries - and of course we can't exactly do invasive experiments to help the process along. The people acting as test subjects would kind of protest, at least until they suffered sufficient brain damage.

2. Does God exist? The universe had a start - what caused it?
Scientists are convinced that our universe began with one enormous explosion of energy and light, which we now call the Big Bang. This was the singular start to everything that exists: the beginning of the universe, the start of space, and even the initial start of time itself.[/quote
Weee......what caused god? (Why does god automatically get a get-out-of-causality-free card?)

3. Does God exist? The universe operates by uniform laws of nature. Why does it?
Why? Because that's how it is. Not much else to it. If it was something else, it would be something else, and if those laws wouldn't allow life to exist, no one would be around complaining about how much it all sucks to live in chaos

4. Does God exist? The DNA code informs, programs a cell's behavior.
See the section on the brain.

5. Does God exist? We know God exists because he pursues us. He is constantly initiating and seeking for us to come to him.
Rrrrright.

6. Does God exist? Unlike any other revelation of God, Jesus Christ is the clearest, most specific picture of God revealing himself to us.
Clear like a black hole.

I was just doing what everyone else was doing. I did add the Pwned part though. I didn't read any of what I posted, but I am sure neither did the other guys. :)
Who here besides you plagiarized someone?

There is no reason to argue for or against this matter here. Those that believe the truth, know it to be real.
Non-sequitur.

Those that don't believe, belieive in whatever they feel they need to believe. Not one person will ever change the mind of another on the board.
Baseless assertion.

Theism is apparently conducive to logical fallacies.

Atheism leads to Nazism. Even the pope says so: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11332515

Owned.

Hmmm, gotta disagree with the pope there. Atheists have really helped the world.

I mean think about it. In 1950, very few people were atheists, and the world was on the brink of thermonuclear war! But now the number of atheists is much higher and the risk of nuclear war is much lower.

Obviously atheists decrease the chance of nuclear war.

Is it more reasonable to believe that holes in the ground are intelligently designed to fit each individual mud puddle, or that mud pudldes naturally conform to the holes into which they accumulate?

No, which was kind of my point. Just since something is how life needs it to be to survive doesn't mean that there had to be intelligent design.

I don't think the universal laws were "made" to support humanity. I think they were here and we evolved to worth within them.

I thought that was the point. Afterall, everything concerning science when it comes to space and time is all made up.

Do you say crap like this when talking to people in real life? I wouldn't even make it to lunch without somebody asking me if I was drunk.

I tend to associate myself with more enlightened people in real life. I'm forced to shave off a dozen or so IQ points in order to communicate on this level.

I'm going to tell myself that you're trolling so I can leave this alone.

That is all you can say because you have no rational backing for your argument. Therefore I am correct by default.

No, son, you see the universe doesn't have rules for everything in the universe so all those things can exist, rather those thing exists BECAUSE of the rules of the universe.

This world with it's constraints and everly natural law it has has allowed evolution to become what we are today, if it hadn't, something else would have happened and we wouldn't be here having this discussion now.

So you see, we are not the be all end all of evolution, we are an itty bitty thing in a very long timescale and in three billion years, there will be being who will never admit that they could possibly share us as an ancestor to them (and actually, they might even be correct on that).

You can't understand the universe, so you make shit up to fill it with meaningful crap to make you feel better, if that works for you, fine, but that is YOUR truth and your own truth, it has absolutely nothing to do with reality.

Someone said earlier that you cannot prove god wrong, well that is true because that concept adheres to NOTHING in THIS universe, however, it's fairly easy to prove religion wrong based on what is observable on this planet.

Funny, I thought that was my argument.

19. Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned. – Anonymous

18. With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. – Steven Weinberg

17. Since the Bible and the church are obviously mistaken in telling us where we came from, how can we trust them to tell us where we are going? – Anonymous

16. The invisible and the non-existent look very much alike. – Delos B. McKown

15. Two hands working can do more than a thousand clasped in prayer. – Anonymous

14. Blind faith is an ironic gift to return to the Creator of human intelligence. – Anonymous

13. What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof. – Christopher Hitchens (pictured)

12. I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. – Stephen Roberts

11. It ain’t the parts of the Bible that I can’t understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand. – Mark Twain

10. Atheism is a non-prophet organization. – George Carlin (pictured)

7. When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion. – Robert Pirsig

5. Most religions prophecy the end of the world and then consistently work together to ensure that these prophecies come true. – Anonymous

4. Religions are like pills, which must be swallowed whole without chewing. – Anonymous

3. If I were not an atheist, I would believe in a God who would choose to save people on the basis of the totality of their lives and not the pattern of their words. I think he would prefer an honest and righteous atheist to a TV preacher whose every word is God, God, God, and whose every deed is foul, foul, foul. – Isaac Asimov

2. Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful. – Seneca the Younger (pictured)

1. Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? – Epicurus

What rules? You don't think that there is some Grand Rule Book to which the universe refers before deciding what it can or can't do, do you?

True, natural laws are not rules at all, rules can be decided upon, natural laws are explicit, you can't violate them no matter how hard you try. (if you could, it would cease to be a law)
