Just out of curiosity,

9gk7lv.jpg

$485,93

- $40 from AR

= $445,93

I could even upgrade the CPU, Memory, GPU and add an SSD later on. I would take this one over PS4/XBone any time. ;)

No hard drive, and no operating system included. And it's in an insanely fugly and pointlessly huge case- I sure as hell don't want that thing in my living room.

If you want a console replacement PC, just buy the Alienware Alpha.

I only see software and hardware sales mixed together?
On gross revenue:

....This significant increase was primarily due to the contribution from PS4 hardware sales...

On operating profits:

...This significant improvement was primarily due to the impact of the above-mentioned increase [e.g. the one on gross revenue] in sales related to the introduction of the PS4...

Yea forgot the HDD, add $40 for the 500GB drive and we are at $486

The Case is Midi-ATX and not large as a full tower.

One more thing than many forget or doesnt consider,

150+ FREE Games on steam, those will save you more than the PS4/XBone cost alone ;)

Also, add that PS4/XBone games cost $10-15 more at release than the PC equivalent and
also add Game discounts from Steam and you end up paying more than double in a few years owning PS4/XBone than the PC i listed above.

Not to mention you can also do your job with the PC and you dont need to buy a PC + PS4/XBone.

;)

It doesn't say so on the list, but War Thunder now has a Steam Linux Client. (I've played it recently and it runs great).

P.S. I just found out that Empire Total War, although not a free game, in now on Linux as well. (Pretty exciting to see titles like Total War and CIV V (for example) come to Linux/Steam OS because they cannot be found on the major consoles.)

They're starting to pile up quite fast actually. Almost surprisingly so in some ways.

Still mostly strategy games/indy stuff but there's definitely a good chunk of games that are on steamOS but not consoles and some fairly major ones in the mix.

Keeping me happy on my desktop, a bit less sure if they're ones you'd want to play on a TV :)

Yes, I've been wondering why we are beginning to see Linux gaming finally ramp up.

One reason obviously is Steam having a Linux client. (This in part to Gabe Newell's concerns over the direction of Windows).

But then seeing all the non-Valve developers having confidence in Linux too is somewhat surprising.

One theory I have regarding the non-Valve developers support for Linux stems from all the relatively powerful desktop hardware floating around from 2006 to 2009 that currently has Windows Vista or no OS at all.

Maybe the developers think some people would rather run Linux or something like SteamOS than Vista? (Side Note: Support for Vista SP2 ends April 11, 2017 so maybe that is part of it too?)

P.S. In some families who have a relatively weak Windows machine (eg, 1037U based laptop or All-in-one) a higher end Core 2 level desktop with Linux or SteamOS could potentially be the most powerful machine in the house. Even going forward it looks like atom/jaguar based hardware will go into even more mainstream machines. (eg, witness dual core Bay Trail-M replacing 1037U in entry level WIndows notebooks for 2014) so this trend doesn't look it change anytime soon.

With that mentioned, It will be interesting to see MS's response to this. Maybe they will institute some form of lower cost licensing (aimed at the general public) for older Desktops in order to prevent Linux or SteamOS adoption.

If you need to run Office, any Core 2 Duo laptop that most people already have lying around will do the job just fine...

And no, really, it's still a massive and ugly ass case. It's 22 litres- a PS4 is 4 litres. It's literally 5 times the size of a PS4. And the Alienware Alpha is only 2 litres!

And relatively slow memory in single-channel config (only 1 DIMM) won't help an APU either. In fact your better of with a Athlon + dedicated for gaming. You pay maybe $50 more for 100% more GPU performance.

It is with an Athlon 750K + R9 280 ;)

His build is using a Athlon x4 760K with R9 280.

P.S. With regard to the commennts about his case being too big, I would like to see some company come out with a slim form factor uATX case with riser (for video card). Sure a person could use Mini-ITX, but the uATX boards are cheaper and also much more likely to be the ones supplied in value bundles (eg G3258/uATX bundles). Furrthermore, some value processors like the FX-6300 can't be had in the Mini-ITX form factor.

You want Slim ?? here we are,

nozqcx.jpg

$506,93

- $20 AR

+ $43 for 500GB SATA 2.5" HDD

= $529,93

At the same price as Alienware Alpha, but you have a fully customizable system ready to upgrade anything you want any time, unlike Alpha. ;)

Caution : The slim BD on newegg will not work with the case. But at the same price you can find a slot in Slim BD rom like this one on ebay.

The power supply seems a bit pricey, surely one could do better there.

Also, is an optical drive even required?

Let me add my voice to those saying they were totally underwhelmed by the latest consoles by Sony & MS.

If MS had gone all out, they could have finished Sony off as a competitor in consoles.

Now Sony has a new lease of life.

See, now that's more like it! I've been advocating the ML07 for a while now, looks like a nice case. The PCIe riser is just the only design that makes sense for a modular PC. That's a PC I would actually be willing to put under my TV.

Size and OS is not the point, you cant even compare the PS4 OS to a full PC OS, its not really a full OS and i dont see Microsoft charging $50 a year for using the network function, also, there are free options and you can even live of Microsoft technet evaluations, and size, the thing is it can be done, its not about if you like it to put it on your living.

A big fugly plastic box whaever origin
Some Intel core i5 on newest node k model ofcource or a amd fx 8 core processor that uses 150w configured with loads of voltage tweaking
The cheapest 1200w powersuply available so you can upgrade to quad sli later
A constant connection to oldpiratebay where users can get the newest hack of windows 7
A gamerz mouse with 23 ajustable possibilities and firmware upgrade each month
Lan and no wifi

No OS, still missing a stick of RAM, no controllers and an open box one off video card. :D And $130 over the PS4. Keep the silly comparisons coming

Form factor/power is everything in the console space dude.

You want a free OS? ill invite you to go here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/
or just use Linux, or wharever, dont even try to argue in favor of the Sony O$.

And if you think you need more than 4GB to compare to PS4 think again, PS4 games can only use 6GB of RAM+VRAM.

No one cares about the form factor, we are talking about the hardware used in consoles vs similar or superior hardware avalible in pc, if you want to argue with that i can also tell you that no one needs an optic unit in pc, but again that is not the point.

A 760K with the current PS4 IGP and GDDR5 mem whiout having to reserve cores and mem for the OS/DRM, whould have been enoght for a lot of people to no complain about it, and thats already a very low standard, no matter if the consoles have just 4 more years of life, games after that whould still be maded for run on these for a few more years, thats too much.

A 8 cores versions of a tablet cpu is just not good enoght for a gaming device, no to mention that some tasks are very hard to make it effective on multicore, like the IA programing, you are petty much stuck with as much power as 1 core can give you for that task, that among a few things that can be done more effectively on a high performing quad, instead of a low power x8, actually, x6.

1: 4GB is plenty for gaming even today.
2: OS could be the one you already have or even use Linux.
3: $130 is nothing when you factor in you may not spend a single dollar for Games if you will play all those free in Steam or anywhere else.
4: This PC could be used 24/7 for work, browsing, gaming etc etc. You cannot do work on Consoles.
5: This PC can also be upgraded anytime you choose in order to play newer games at higher Image Quality than PS4/XBone will ever have.

This is not for everyone, but it sure is better in many ways.

What's going on in this thread? Are people still upset that the consoles are under powered?

And you can't build a PC to match the consoles unless you are going to pay bulk prices (thus reducing cost).

Someone listed the Alienware Alpha, for $500 beans that's a good competitor to these consoles. Small form factor, faster GPU/CPU, OS, even includes a controller. Only $100 more than the PS4 and $150 than the current priced cut Xbone.

Gonna have to go to an OEM if you want to compete on price. DYI won't win that fight.

It can be as low as 128mb if an application in use needs it, it does not even worth mentioning it.

You know that cats have 4 legs right? you are really trying hard to find the 5th...
