GOP platform draft seeks gay marriage ban.Originally posted by: rh71
I never understood politics - call me naive or whatever... you have these 2 major parties who have their beliefs and way of doing things. If I were a democrat, I'd be voting for the democratic nominee... but that just means I'm voting for "my team", and not necessarily for their beliefs or what the individual has planned for the country. Same applies to things like this... if you say the republican party is suppressing gays... and I happened to be republican for other reasons, does that mean I'm anti-gay ? Should I be ? The republican dude on my left... what does he think about gays ?Originally posted by: Fausto
Right, but plenty of people **cough**therepublicanparty**cough** go out of their way to publicly condemn gayness; the "I'm gay and proud" thing is a reaction to that. There was no such thing as Pride Parades until after the Stonewall riots (which were provoked by constant police raids on gay bars).Originally posted by: rh71
RE: the white/black issue.. I think people need to stop looking at race and just stick with culture. I guess you can apply that to this homo/hetero thing also... but I wish the gays would stop flaunting this "gay & proud" stuff... I really couldn't care less what you are.
I think the Republican vs. Democrat (or any other "party") s#!t is so pointless. Just vote for the best liar ... err... I mean man for the job. Why are they stamped with "republican", "democrat", or otherwise ? Is this what democracy is about ? Choosing teams ?

The difference is that heteros aren't harassed for who they are. It's about being proud of who you are when that doesn't necessarily conform to societal norms.Originally posted by: Captain_Howdy

Where is the pride in being gay or straight? I never understood it. I am proud of my achievements in everyday life, but not of my sexuality. It's not something I worked for, just something I am.
Best response so far, IMHO.

Funny, and I hope they go through with it.
People were calling in saying how appalling it is and how it is a disgrace.
uhh, no, its totally normal. If people weren't straight, the human existence would end, since no one could have kids.

you cannot separate yourself from the fact that in some way, you are in fact supporting an anti gay agenda when you vote republican. its just the way it is. your vote condones their platform. esp on an issue their voters have never punished them for using during campaigns

Why would someone have a pride parade for being normal? How can someone be proud of being boring?
If you have never been to a gay pride parade, stfu. I'm straight, but I marched in the Seattle one during a union internship, and I had a blast. There was all kinds of weirdness going, Dykes on Bikes, GWAR impersonators showed up! Leather everywhere, even topless lesbians!!!!! Seriously, if there is a pride parade in your city just go there and watch the craziness, it beats the hell out of most stupid parades.

I vote republican and I'm not anti-gay. I just care about other issues more than I do about gay issues.

There are so many issues that are more important to me than gay rights that it doesn't really register on the candidate comparison.Originally posted by: 0roo0roo

but the net effect of your support is gay oppression. i guess that sacrifice is alright to you.
which is kind of strange really.

its like voting for the anti civil rights candidate in 1960 because you support less railway subsidies.

Right there are plenty of people in the **cough**republicanparty**cough** that don't give a rats ass what gays do like the **cough**vicepresident**cough** and plenty of **cough**demoncrats**cough** that don't follow the gay pride agenda. **cough**JohnKerry**cough** has said he doesn't support Homosexual marriges. To me I don't see why it should even be a issue the federal Government has no reason to be involved in it.
