Kurt Cobain was way better. Artistically, commercially and technically. He also influenced everyone of every genre. This cannot be said about Hendrix but kudos to him regardless as he wrote a few famous songs like Hey Joe.

I'm going to say that most of Henrix's talent was in presentation though. A lot of his live recordings are hard to listen to. Your live performance is the true test of your talent.

Heh- Hendrix had NO technical ability. I don't even think he knew the names of the notes on a guitar. He played almost completely by ear.

Music isn't a contest but there are plenty of players with as much imagination and soul as Hendrix had and who are technically better players.

Frank Zappa is pretty much the period on that sentence but there are plenty of other guitar players no one here probably has heard of...

Malmsteen, Clapton, SRV, Buckethead, EVH, Vai, Tony Iommi, Kirk Hammet, Duane Allman, Santana, Tom Morello, Angus, Jack White, Randy Rhoads. But of course you're trying to compare a Hendrix to many of his predecessors who can play much faster and with more technical proficiency. My $.02

There's probably at least 10,000 guitarists walking the earth that are as talented, can play with as much if not more soul, and have better technical skills.

However, JH influenced music like no other. He pretty much there first and blew the doors open. Part of what makes Jimi sound so good and raw is that he was pioneering the sound.

I think a lot people confuse Hendrix's musical talent with technical ability. Hendrix was able to tease sounds out of his guitar that no one else could, and he was a brillian musician. But I think quite a few guitarists have been better technical players.

There are quite a few players who could do that, it's just that no one has heard of them if they don't follow that kind of music. Roy Buchanan was able to conjur sounds out of his telecaster that aren't even fathomable without the aid of effects despite him not using them. Jeff Beck is another example of this although he's a bit more popular.

Hendrix was at the right place at the right time to gain the immense popularity he did. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it but that remains true. Much like people think Cobain was a revolutionary (sorry, he's not) guitarist because he was at the right place in history.

Exactly. Hendrix was the first to truly make his guitar speak. Many have followed since. Drop Steve Vai back into the 60's and people will be saying "Henrix who?"

The fascination with him was that during the timeframe he hit the mainstream, nobody, and I mean nobody was playing a guitar like that.

To use a late 60's term, it was mind-blowing. We had never heard anyone make music like that with a guitar.
