Steve Gaines from the '76-'77 Skynyrd guitar trio lineup. Too bad the plane crash ended his young career.

Many great guitarmen mentioned here, SRV will always hold a special place for me because he grew up right down the street from me and I got to watch him frequently in his garage band days before he made it famous, and he was probably the best of the Hendrix influenced rockers.

But Jimi was the original, the innovator, the trend setter. He put the "electric" in electric guitar, he pratically invented the stomp box era, he was the first to use a Wah Wah, tape delay, and many others. Les Paul and Leo Fender invented the instrument and Jimi showed the world what to do with it;)

Comparing any contemporary guitarists to Hendrix is like trying to compare Barry Bonds or Hank A. to Babe Ruth, Sure Barry and Hank were technically better hitters and hit more HR's than Ruth, but the Babe will always be the original slugger.

SRV is great, I see his name mentioned all over this thread and while he's an amazing player, he took a path that Jimi blazed already and went his own way with it.

Not to nitpick but Les Paul used tape delay before Hendrix, Jimi just took it mainstream. The same can be said for the tapping technique that EVH popularized and changed the face of music with. He wasn't the first to use it but he definitely was the first to make it wildly popular.

Jimi also made the Strat the instrument it is today. The Strat was the low budget model in the Fender lineup and he took it and launched it into stardom. Similar could be said about the Mustang when Adrian Belew and David Byrne started using them and launching them into cult status among indie/alternative acts.

There are lots of people who are as good as he was. It just so happens that he was the first in line at it, so he gets the recognition....

One of my favorite players (Graham Coxon) is definately not technically proficient as he was, but some players, such as Clapton, are.

As for Mr. Cobain....right place, right time. If anything, I think Billie Joe Armstrong is a better guitarist than Cobain and Armstong is not even close to revolutionary or god like.

SRV was obviously inspired by Hendrix and he recorded a few of his songs. "Voodoo Chile" comes immediately to mind. Brilliant!

If you were to ask many of the guitarists mentioned in this thread, they would also attribute their style as being influenced by Hendrix. But I don't see the point in asking who is better. You either like their music or you don't. Pat Metheny falls in that category. I'm not at all a fan but recognize he's gifted player.

That is how it always works. People who make it mainstream will get credit for it. Look at the Beatles. They get credit for lots of stuff but in reality they were simply inspired by music that was way before their time. They simply brought it into the mainstream.
