Help with strange internet access problem

Thanks. I will try it, but I don't think it will make a difference since Chrome and IE come up properly in English (although they can't access the internet).

Still have not seen any suggestions to the problem of no internet access for IE and Chrome.

Did you do dism /online?

dism / online /restorehealth should fetch whateverfile you need from ms

Unfortunately, no disk provided for the OEM system. Just the restore partition and the ability to make restore disks.

Tried to go the Microsoft website which lets you enter a serial number and then burn an ISO, but even that says I have an OEM install and need to go back to the manufacturer for a disk.

Those 4 corrupt files might come from installing Explorer 11.

So try downloading it from microsoft and see what happens

or if you have another win7 home computer around with the same names
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\....
try copying them from there

If only firefox can connect, and you're getting multilingual gibberish, it sounds like malware hijacked your proxy settings. Even if you removed the malware (or it was done automatically), removal doesn't necessarily reset these windows settings to their proper state.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > "Connections" Tab.

Click the "LAN Settings" button at the bottom.

Make sure "Automatically detect settings" is checked.
Everything else should be unchecked.

Thanks, but this looks good. Only "automatically detect settings" is checked.

Funny thing is that everything was working perfectly under Windows 10. The issue was, the computer would hang every 5-10 minutes, so I ended up downgrading back to Win 7. Issues started immediately after.

Tried installing IE 11 64 bit. Won't do it: says I have a more recent version already installed. Don't have another Win 7 machine - laptop is Win 8.1

One step forward...

Looked through Windows Update - found one update from 2013, and uninstalled that.

Just for the hell of it, tried IE - came up as IE 8, and works perfectly! In fact, I am writing this on my Sony. Checked Chrome - still hangs, and checked Firefox - still the same gibberish on the screen.

Tried installing IE11 - went through partial install, then says "did not finish installing". Still on IE 8 and still works.

Now what? At least I can download stuff easier, but still have the internet access issues and the Firefox gibberish issue.

if so try reinstallling firefox again ..maybe it had some dependencies on the corrupted files

I ran DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth and the log file came out clean!

Unfortunately, uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox made no difference. Still the gibberish on the screen.

Started Firefox in Safe Mode (had to have my laptop duplicate what I was doing since I could not read the screen on the Sony). Lo and behold, the issues went away; everything was in English.

Figured it had to be something in Extensions and Themes since these are disabled in Safe Mode. However, I had no extensions and themes!

A little more googling, and turned off hardware acceleration under Options, Advanced, General tab.

Problem solved. Also managed to relink Google Drive folders on the web to my folder on the hard drive.

No idea why Chrome won't work, but don't care. I do need to figure out why Kaspersky installer just sits there with a blank screen.

Reinstalling the video driver did not help. Still Had to turn off hardware acceleration in order to get Firefox to run properly.

I finally did resolve the Kaspersky issue - had to update Microsoft .Net Framework before it would install.
