Hi, I just built a new amd tbird 1ghz. I have 256mb ram. I used a hard drive from my old computer with all of my old files on it. I get to windows(98) just fine and then whenever i start doin something the screen just freezes. Does anyone know what the problem is?
Thanks

Some possibilities:

-It's actually a slower tbird that's been overclocked and is overheating
-Your heatsink/fan is insufficient or not properly seated
-Your old Win98 setup doesn't like being moved and you should reformat and reinstall.

Other than that, you could check your memory timing settings in the BIOS and see if they are normal, try lowering them.

When you booted up with new MB, did you wipe out your old Dev Mgr info? Sounds like a HW conflict.

If not U could try this, tho be careful, backup your system & registry first!

1)Copy WIN98 directory from your install CD to your HDD.
2)Go into regisrty, HKey_Local_Machine & delete the "Enum" key.
3)Re-boot, W98 will rebuild Dev Mgr using your current OS,MB,&setup.
4)You will have 2 re-boot a few times, your CDROM may not B accessable, refer windows to that WIN98 directory on your HDD...

Good Luck!

The motherboard is MSI Pro 2A with a retail 1ghz athlon and a taisol hsf. The cpu temp is never more than 105F. I have 256 mb of generic ram and the device mgr was totally cleared and rebuilt. Any more ideas?
BTW there isn't an ENUM key in REGEDIT

<< have 256 mb of generic ram >>

I wonder if that`s your problem if you can get hold of some high quality ram like Crucial you will be then able to eliminate your ram as the cause of the problem.

<< I don't think so. Should I have >>

If you mean Via drivers they should be the first thing installed, to improve stability & performance, especially in gaming.

Another thing....I don't know if it makes a difference. I got the motherboard and CPU and the place i bought them from preassemble the cpu and the hsf and tested it on the motherboard. When i got it i just plugged my hard drive in and i went right to win 98 after it recognized all my hardware. I didn't do anything else. Does this have anything to do with my problem?

About the ram-I got 128 pc100 micron ram and tried that.... It still hangs randomly. Also it always locks up if i try to run a game like midtown madness 2 or need for speed 5

Ok...now something is wrong...i installed directx 8 rebooted and now the second partition of my hard drive doesn't show up in windows explorer
