I would like to avoid reformatting if possible because i have a lot of info that i need and that would take a while to back up with my cdrw. So does anyone else have any other options to try?
Removing the hardware is what you should have done before you built the system.
In safe mode - Remove EVERYTHING in devide manager Except Plug-n-play bios. reboot and let windows setup all the hardware from scratch.

Dood, I know you've voiced not wanting to format... but I am going to tell you from experience, Windows98 does a Very crappy job at moving from one system to another, I've had "few" successes in doing it. Though I've had some. I usually end up formatting after I got tired of dealing with the bugs and crashes...
The amount of time it takes you to set everything back up, will be, in the long run "LESS" than the time you will spend dealing with crashes and lockups.

First off: what is in your system? You said you just took your harddrive out and put it in. Did you keep all the same cards in your system and just replaced your motherboard?
Next question: you said you installed the 4in1 drivers then DX8 then video card drivers. Isn't it 4in1s, then video and sound and then DX8?
Next question: are there any conflicts showing in the device manager?
next question: what BIOS settings are you using? (focus on the memory timings and interlacings)
There's a couple more to ask but I think these will give us a start. For now.
We do need to know what you have in there other than motherboard and processor.

there are no conflicts in device manager. I used all the same cards and everything. I have a vortex 2 sound card, a diamond viper v550 and a voodoo2, i haven't changed anything with the timing or interlacing so it is default.
i suppose i will try to remove everything in device manager and see if that works. If that doesn't then i supposed i'll backup the hard drive and reformat. Thanks for the help everyone
OS has the good approach. I didn't even think to bring that up. Its the easiest way to transfer th edata and then you get another drive to back things up to.

2) Moving to a new mobo on a system will only cause you instability with your system and delay the inevitable--FFR

Yeah man, before you destroy your entire software base with a format try some of cavingjan advice. This sounds like a hardware problem as much as anything.
I have to say that I am not an advocate of the hurry up and reformat school. A rather drastic step to get rid of a handful of drivers. Unlike some I have had great success in just moving a hdd from one pc to another. Rebuilding a system takes days of work.
So I say, first try to just reinstall windows without the reformat and see what happens. I guess you're using win98FE? Take you about an hour tops? Big deal!
I assume you ran scan disk at least once through this. If not, run that before you reinstall windows.
I do think that it would be worth your while to get rid of most of the drivers before reinstalling windows though. Since you don't have enum (I didn't know that win98FE didn't have that)you'll have to do it the old fashioned way.
I think your 4 in 1 drivers will survive the windows reinstall but I'm not sure so you may have to reinstall them.

Doesnt the KT133 chipset hate those cards?
I think you need to use some reference drivers for those.
I have seen a lot of people having problems with those Vortex sound cards and Amd via chipsets.
You didn't mention if you migrated from a different motherboard. I tried to go from a 440LX to a KT133A - No good. I ended up having to reformat.
Yeah, I would try it once without the vortex2 - it has a history of problems with several chipsets. If that still doesnt work, then we should start to consider a more drastic solution like reformatting.
I personally had no real problems going from a K6-2 400 on an Asus P5A socket 7 system to my current rig. I guess I was somewhat lucky. I removed alot of stuff in the device manager that related specifically to my old mobo and I think that helped.

Had a new duron 800 that did the same thing, tried a bunch of stuff too. If the whole computer freezes (which is what i think you mean by "lockup", and not just the program, it might be the heatsink not being big enough. I thought I had a pretty big one, but I took it back to the guy I bought it from, and he slapped on some thermal grease, bigger heatsink, and HUGE fan after talking with some other people. Now it works fine. Just my experience.
