Help me pick a dog........

As much as I love my Dalmatians, they don't really fit any of the requirements. Please do not get suckered into a Dalmatian because there is a Disney move about them. They are wonderful dogs, but they don't really mellow out until they are 5-8 years old.

Also, you cannot wear black if you own a Dalmatian.


My suggestion is to visit the animal shelter and find a friend. There may be friends there that have already lived with children and get along great with them.

Dude, I love Corgi's more than anything - they're very well behaved and fun to play with after establishing dominance - but they're not good with kids. I'm actually not quite sure about Basenji's also since they're herders, buttttt they're a lot more laid back than a Corgi is. I'd go with an American Bulldog - my Aunt and Uncle breed them and those dogs are teased relentlessly by their 3 kids and the dogs still play with them.

Uhm, no - and they're very good to their animals, no crates, they don't take the puppies away before they're ready. Their dogs are part of their family, and treat them as such ... they have a huge backyard, and get lots of attention. Nothing like some of the things I've seen in the past ...

Good calls on the schnauzer and bichon. I'd heard bichon before for literally NO shedding. (might have to check that out).

And I hear ya' on the dalmation thing. Wife's friend has a boxer & that dog is as adorable as could be but the sucker is just a lightning bolt and a bull in a china store.

When we were looking we heard Maltese are so-so with kids. Good if you bring them up with them, not so good if not.

Yes, Bichon Frise is also a good choice, same family as the Havanese (technically it's Bichon Havanese). Only thing is they only come in white and they have curly hair rather than wavy.

Please, not for small children - same for pugs, or any bug-eyed dog. I love my pug/Boston mix and my SIL's Boston but they're not allowed to be around kids cause they always want to play too close to their eyes.

Also, might want to watch out on a Boston and find out if they have a history of bad demodex in their family, as this can lead to mange and be a very scary process. The Boston is in constant agony from the scratching, and she'll basically need to be dipped every month or so.
 
Maltese.

1.) medium at largest (small house, small yard) Ours is only 6 pounds.
2.) LITTLE TO NO SHEDDING (my sister has 2 pugs & they shed like volcanos erupt) He hardly ever sheds. His hair does grow, so you can either take him to a groomer, or just trim it yourself, which my parents do using one of those hair clipper devices you can buy at any store.
3.) mild mannered well... he can be a bit hyper, and eventually calms down as the day progresses, but this may be our fault to have brought him up so wild

As for how they do with children, our dog is super friendly and thinks everyone is his friend. However he's not very good with playing fetch or sharing toys, and sometimes can hold on to them pretty well if a kid isn't expecting it. He also thinks he's a guard dog, since he barks at the door or at anyone that comes up to the house... but that's because he wants to play with them once they approach. He doesn't know who is good and who is bad.

As for the tear stain problems with malteses, if you keep them pretty clean, it's not a problem. Our maltese has the cleanest face known to mankind.

He is cute as a button though. I love him to death.

i think mine has some poodle in him. his nose is a bit long by bichon standards. his body also seems a bit long.
 
You could get a mini-aussiedoodle (cross between a poodle and a mini-australian shepherd). They are great with kids, really smart and incredibly cute.

If you want family dogs, there's nothing better than a golden retriever. Unfortunately they shed. As much as it pains me to say it, Labradoodle or a Golden Doodle (Lab or Golden / Poodle mix).

Well, since OP doesn't mention anything about avoiding a "mutt", then yes. Would it have been clearer if I had said, "You could get a mutt. They are great with kids, really smart and incredibly cute." Or are you just trying to sound like an ass?
 
FWIW, I also thought about rolling the dice and just picking the best available dog from the pound or human society to be a good samaritan, but if I get a "mut" (assuming I could get a *puppy* from one of those places) it might be more like Russian Roulette than hoping to get lucky.
