Help me pick a dog........

So, last dog we had was about 5 years ago. I was at a meeting in Vegas (live in So Cal) and wife calls me at 11pm in the hotel room crying her eyes out.......

"I think I left the gate open and I can't find Toby!" (Toby was 16yrs old as best we could tell)

I tried to console her, but figured he'd be back anyway. Well, no joy. He never came back. (I was told they will leave like that when they know they're gonna die to be alone...???)

Anywhooo..........

5 yrs & 2 young daughters later, all 3 lady-folk want a dog and wife's thinkin' of surprising them for Christmas.

Criteria for dog suggestions......

1.) medium at largest (small house, small yard)
2.) LITTLE TO NO SHEDDING (my sister has 2 pugs & they shed like volcanos erupt)
3.) mild mannered

I think that's it. TIA!!!!!!!!

get a cat

Pitbull. They're the sweetest dog you'll ever own. Even better if you have small children around, they love (the taste of) small children.

Corgi's aren't good with kids, best as I've seen. I'd say get a Basenji, those dogs are damn awesome ...

shens dude, I live in a condo complex with a husky....I take her out 3-4 times a day, dog park at least 4-5 times a week, she is great....dogs need down time too 🙂

Well, and I guess I should specify more clearly........our house/yard isn't tiny, just not Lab/Retriever size.

I don't know about a Bulldog. (saw that cute one that flushed the toilet on some TV show the other night)

Was considering a Lhasa/Shitzu or one of those other little dogs. Don't wanna get too fooofy, but Toby was a Lhasa mix & pretty good dog. (taller & longer than a regular lhasa)

Depends how you define "good"

Corgi's are "good" at herding your little kids!

how can you not love a face like this?!

a bulldog might be a little bigger than you want (when it gets to full grown) and the maintenance is pretty high, but they are absolutely amazing with small kids.

Plus the are absolutely adorable too.

I grew up with golden retreivers and I would have one now, but I'm in an apartment that won't accomodate a big dog that sheds.

So I got a mini schnauzer.

- no shedding
- extremely friendly/loving with family
- normally quiet, but has guard dog tendencies and will bark at someone at the door
- ~25 lbs full grown

I'd recommend a schnauzer to anyone looking for a house dog.

lol

I don't have any recent ones 🙁

He's rapidly approaching his 21-26 pound desired weight.

Dude, I love Corgi's more than anything - they're very well behaved and fun to play with after establishing dominance - but they're not good with kids. I'm actually not quite sure about Basenji's also since they're herders, buttttt they're a lot more laid back than a Corgi is. I'd go with an American Bulldog - my Aunt and Uncle breed them and those dogs are teased relentlessly by their 3 kids and the dogs still play with them.

i've got a 'bichon,' who thinks he's a guard dog. doesn't shed much, is co-dependent on people, and likes to please.

Nope, backyard breeder. You'd think working for a national dog magazine, you'd have a clue.
