Help me learn stick shift

My life long goal was to learn how to drive stick shift and drive like Steve McQueen. I have been calling up rental places to rent a manual transmission car but none have them. I don't have friends that drive stick shift. I wanted to buy a stick shift car but no one in my family knows how to drive one. I think stick shift is fun to drive and damn it I want to drive stick shift
 
its overrated...get caught in traffic and have your left leg go numb and then tell me if you want to drive a stick.

 
If you were in IL i'd give you a lesson. Fly up here.

There are only 5 steps.

1. Push in clutch
2. put in next gear
3. press gas
4. release clutch slowly until moving forward.
5. accelerate
6 goto step 1

It's not really something you can learn on the internet. You really have to do it in a parking lot somewhere...

I will say this though...while you're learning, don't be afraid to rev. You'll never stall from over-revving

Mine has. 3+ hrs in stop and go city traffic does that, expecialy with a dual friction clutch.
 
Just buy manual car and drive it. Its not that hard to get it going. When in doubt, slip the clutch. ehhe.

Yes I stalled the damn M3 (new one) and Audi A4 when i first drove it... I did ok on the Hondas. The more expensive ones, I declined. Its fun to drive other peoples cars. And yes, i've worked briefly in a parking garage. Very, very briefly.

more than once. It was in Detroit traffic. Here in Grand Rapids it wasnt bad. I am just saying that there is a reason that most people drive an automatic.

Teh Intarweb knows everything!

Seriously OP; just go buy one. As a beginner's rule of thumb, just remember that your foot never touches the clutch except when you push it all the way in, and you'll be fine.

Dude, not my M3. They belonged to customers in the parking garage.

edit: damn, now I re-read what I typed, my english is very poor.
 
It's not that hard really, I bought my first manual car without knowing how to drive stick, the salesman gave me a quick crash course twice around a empty parking lot before I took it home, so I took it home, stalled twice, and never did again.

For me, step 4 is the hardest, especially in first gear. I end up killing the engine and that scares me because I don't want that to happen in traffic.

Im looking forward to my car so I can drive a manual for 2 reasons. a)my mom wont get a man anymore due to pain with clutch 🙁 b)my dad wont let me drive his manual cause hes annoying and doesnt seem to think its a good thing to learn :|
