I think this thread is just a lame way to get the ladies of OT to tell you how cute your cat is... or i could just be wrong.

Elita,

Have you noticed that your cat is particularly insane during certain parts of the day ? My guys do the chasing of imaginary enemies and defend me from scraps of paper and such generally between 7am and 10am.

Uhoh, sounds like you've got one with expensive tastes. How old is it first of all? When cats are young they're high-flying balls of intense energy and woe to whatever gets in the way. For the cat, it's all in the name of fun, not so much fun for the owner, however. Most cats settle down after a year, some never do. If you're trying to protect furniture, buy kitty a scratching post. They can be inexpensive and simple or complex (such as a kitty play area (kinda like a jungle gym) and a bit pricey. In my experience, the pricier play stations are better because they're more interseting to the cat, and hence, the cat will (hopefully) take the time to scratch it instead of the furniture (think about it kitty-wise, which would you rather scratch, a boring carpeted stick or scratch on a neat gym with areas to leap and play and neat dangly things to bat at). As for things on counters, etc, you can get a spray called bitter apple that deters them (they hate the smell)or you can even try aluminum foil on top for the counter for a bit (they hate the feel of it on their paws). If you catch them in the act of jumping on a counter, clap your hands loudly and say NO. The noise is uaually enough to scare them off. You can also try distractive measures, such as toyus with bits of feather or jingly balls on/in them.

Cats are hard headed, but very rewarding.

Good luck! :)

Bah, your cat is normal. If he was on crack he'd be acting like you expect. Cats have an inversion thing going on. My cat is the typical garfield, cept she can actually catch the birds.

Hey has anyone seen Meet The Parents.. I was LMAO on some of the scenes where DeNiro was talking about cats... it went something like this:

deniro: "Why do you hate cats greg?"
other guy: "Nahh, I don't hate cats. nahhh...I'm just more of a dog person."
other guy: "You know, I just like when you come home...there they are, wagging their tail, happy to see you."
deniro: "So you prefer an emotionally shallow animal?"
other guy: "uhhh..."
deniro: "see, cats make you work for their affection. they don't sell out like dogs do"

LMFAO!!!!!!!! well you gotta see it to find it funny i guess

Baffled2---yes my kitty is psycho in the morning and in the evening, especially around mealtimess, and in the late evening after about 10:30 pm.

Azraele:
My kitty is almost 5 months old, so still quite young. I do understand that the 1st year they are quite insane, but the thing is, he doesn't scratch. I kind of wish he did.
He DESTROYS!
He chews my silk flowers to bits,
gnaws on anything
Has destroyed my vertical blinds(they are no longer connected, he ate the chains that link the slats)
All the destruction he wreaks is mostly with his mouth. He rarely scratches at all.
Would a scratching post solve my problem?

Elita1: Sounds like your kitten is either teething or is playing inappropriately (to a kitten anything handy is a toy). I think new toys might help, especially ones that can be chewed on. You might also try a letting the kitty chase the light of a laser pen to run off some of that excess energy.

Something else to try is restricting kitty's access to a smaller area so that the path of destruction is a bit smaller. If thre's a room that has stuff in it that you definately don't want messed up, then don't let the kitten in that particular room. As the kittem matures and learns what's appropriate, then you can open the area up. Unfortunately, at this age, kitten's are basically equivalent to humans in the "terrible two" phase. Correct them, distract them, but most of all, survive.

Suggestion if your cat takes a liking to your couch arms: double-sided tape. Run a few strips of this on places the cat scratches, they can't stand the way it sticks their paws. I've found nothing better to keep a cat from scratching. As for the chewing, maybe some rawhide dog toys would help?

Nate you're cat is really cute, looks like mine in the face. :)
You need to get Alex some kitty drugs (aka catnip) crack is far too harsh for a cat. ;)

Elita get a scratching post, put catnip on it and hopefully your cat will learn that it is far more rewarding than the furniture etc.

Also, if you catch them in the act of doing something they aren't suppose to do squirt them with water. Cats HATE water! It only took a few times for my cat to learn what not to do and now if she gets on the table or something all I have to do is show her the water bottle and she's off!

i think its funny how you wanted to show us just how big your cat was by putting a penny down next to him, as a frame of reference.

or your pace is just dirty...whichever.

See, its like people want to argue with me. Why? I say what I have to say, What I think is true, and if its something people dont agree with, or dont want to hear, they tell me to shutup. Why would I bother?

Elita, another idea is aluminum foil. Wrap anything the kitty as playing with in this stuff, cats can't stand how it feels.

A cat I had with my ex-wife would tear at a corner in our bathroom and shread the wall paper. We taped some foil on the wall, and it broke that habit.

I have two cats and had no luck with aluminum. I tried it one day on a dresser top and came home only to find that they were rolling around in it and shredding it up! One of my cats is so annoying in the middle of the night he would meow really loud...and yes he's fixed. He's just plain stupid.
