Sell the existing parts and purchase a 65w Ryzen 2xxx. You will thank yourself later. Even a quad core Ryzen is faster than the FX series.

EDIT: You can Get a mini ITX motherboard, Ryzen 3 2200G CPU, and 8 GB DDR4 3200 RAM for $301 OR LESS on NewEgg right now.

If I can piggyback on this thread I have a question as well. One of my boxes which was built many years ago apparently is able to use FX cpu's as well. https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-78LMT-USB3-rev-60#support-cpu

The box has 16 gb of DDR3 and apparently can support up to an FX-8370. The cpu in this currently is a Phenom X2-555 :(

How about this situation would it make sense to swap the CPU out or should I also do a complete rebuild?

I wouldn't bother, the amount you gain is just not worth it.

he is running a PII X2.... if a cheap FX 6300 can be found, I think that would be a decent upgrade and the MB can probably handle.

I see 49.99 + 1.99 shipping on ebay for that processor. I would have no problem throwing that away on a decent upgrade vs several hundred on a complete rebuild given the current ram prices. I think I'll go that route. Thanks.

That's a little optimistic. It might support it right now, but the VRMs properbly can't handle it long term. The 8 core FXs can use prodigious amounts of power, upwards of 140W, the 4+1 phase design is inadequate for much above 95W TDPs.

Best you can do is an FX-8320E on that board. The E's are specifically binned for upgrades on that kind of board. Otherwise I agree with the 6300.
