I run a small computer business on the side of my day job doing specialized work... Websites, custom programming, security, etc... One of my clients is a very well known Doctor here in town, and he happens to own/run a hospital in Grenada.

We've been working on custom software, website, etc. for a little over 3 months now, and the time has come that we need to have computer systems deployed, network setup and make sure everything is working... He's flying me down there and setting me up with a place to stay for as long as I need this month with a bunch of hardware to get started... :D

Just wondering if anyone was ever visited the island and has any experiences they can share? I'm going down hopefully on the 19th, and I'm expecting two days of solid work... this will leave me with a couple days to myself for a little relaxation time and some exploration of the island...

If anyone has been there - Where are some interesting places to check out? Can you recommend some fun things to do besides sitting on the beach having a drink all day staring at the scenery that is bound to be walking by? (Yes, I'm taking my camera... hehe)

I do a little Geocaching from time to time, so I plan on taking a GPS unit down with me and doing the two caches that are there... I may even create a new one full of some Canadian stuff if I can find a decent spot to drop one. I'm just not expecting that will take all of my spare time...

I'll be staying in Grenville, St. Andrews while I'm there... but will have full access to a jeep that I am free to use for whatever I want while I'm on the island, so getting around isn't going to be a problem at all...

Anyway... just wondering if anyone has any advice/idea's/etc. for me while I'm down there... Places to eat, visit, and whatever else you can think of!!!

Update 1
Question for everyone - I'm sure a lot of the people I will be meeting will not be well off... I'll be on the opposite side of the island than all the resorts and stuff, so I'm guessing most of the people will not be rich by any means...

What is some stuff that I can take down there with me to really help out some of the locals? I'm going to pack two suitcases full of stuff to take down... Clothes, "Canada stuff", Soap, Toothbrushes and toothpaste, stuff like that... Anyone have any suggestions on other stuff that they could really use there??

Update 2
I'm here! Landed last night about 9:00pm. When I left Toronto there was like 3 inches of snow on the ground, and freezing... get off the plane in Barbados and DAMN was it hot... Then I had a connecting flight here to Grenada.

Really awesome here... I'll post pictures and everything as soon as I get back (Don't have a card reader on these computers)

Update 3
I'm home, safe and sound... with like 475 pictures... I have taken about 90 or so of the best ones and uploaded them to the web... and I have some panoramic ones that I will post up later of a view of the top of a mountain, A few of the beaches as well as St. Georges (Capital City)

Here are the pictures that are up so far!

I have a friend who goes there for "medical school" The island took a beating last year with hurricanes, but it should be okay now.

I can tell you there's a whole lot of horny island fever ridden medical students there! A lot of them are Indian and other Asian types...

Well the horny med students won't be on the itinerary... My fiancee might not really approve of that... :)

Plane ticket is $800.00 for her to go, and he will only pay for me... :( With the purchase of our house, the wedding and everything else I can't really afford the extra $1000 or so to get her there and back when I'm just going to be working anyway most of the time...

slightly related joke:

You know what they call the guy who graduates at the bottom of his class from the off-shore "medical school" in Grenada?

Doctor.

Wow man that is so awesome :)

If you do a search on some of my recent posts, ever since going to Aruba, I am dreaming of living on an Island. I am going to continue to look for work on an Island as well. Hell, if you see any more openings there for computer guys, lemme know :)

I was thinking of you the other day while making the post... Seeing your pictures and stuff from Aruba, I was quite impressed... knowing they are two different islands, they are very close and similar in climate and everything...

I'm hoping my experience there will be as good. Do you have any advice that you can share for someone that's never left Canada/USA? I don't know what to expect there... People have warned me to bring mosquito repellent as a 'must' haha :)

In Aruba, mosquito's were no where to be found at all. I think since its such a windy climate in Aruba that it helps keep the insects away.

There isn't much advice I can really give you other than you are one lucky SOB to get a job on an island like that! The one thing that I LOVED the most about my trip was something I had never done before - Snorkeling. It is just so incredible to see the underwater life.

For you to be able to go snorkelling on your weekends or go to a clear water beach on your free time makes me so jealous! Good luck to you and don't worry about anything, I'm sure it'll be awesome. Aruba was my first time out of the US as well, and 1 month from now, I'm going to Nicaragua where my GF is from. I plan on taking 2 trips/yr now out of the US to some carribean climate.

my dream = to live and work in a carribean climate. maybe some day ...

Thanks purebeast... I'm not living your dream yet... I'll be coming home this month as well... :) I'm just going down to do some work and then come home to my day job and everything...

Maybe someday I'll start an IT business there and give you a PM... hehe :)

Does he run the private hospital there? If so I'm still anoyed at him! (to cut a long story short my dad broke his arm over there and they wouldn't even take a proper look at him without $60,000 in cash. Who carries that sort of money? They wouldn't accept CC either or medical insurance. The insurance company nearly flew a man over with a suitcase full of money...)

Edit: Lovely island over there though, just don't get hurt! As for things to bring, don't forget your swimming trunks!

No, it's not a private hospital... its one for everyone no matter what the circumstance... only problem is that it's not in a major city, it's in Grenville...

He's doing some great work down there... He owns a few clinics and stuff here in Canada and just wanted to help out his home country... kinda cool :D

Thats good to hear. The public hospital was very good, if a bit 'dated'. Make sure you have fun out there, the carribean is always really good fun!

Yes.
Reagan's words. Apparently, the successful invasion also stopped the growth of "the Soviet sphere of influence." In 1983.

If this veteran site is correct, the casualty ratio was 1:4 in favor of the US.

Many of the locals are poor. Really! I actually bought overpriced tourist trinkets and felt good about it. There's a school near the top of St. George--lots of opportunities for good photos and the kids were very friendly. I'll post pics later.

Dude, you're covered under:

Area Code Rule
Province/State Rule
Country Rule

and you're pretty damned close to the Continent Rule.

 :p :D

Yeah - I have never swam in anything other than the great lakes (other than a pool) so the white sand beaches and everything is going to be a blast for me... :)

I'll be taking loads of pictures (1gb card for the trip) hopefully many many pictures worthy of my a desktop... lol

If you don't get a Scuba cert while you are there, you should be ashamed of yourself...
