Head Exploding (for me) Issue in Pale Moon 25 [Got around it!]

Greetings.

I haven't been here in forever....cause I got slammed re work, and I am absymal at moderation.()🙂

Now, earlier, new Pale Moon build came in. Version 25. Everything seemed normal as always....until I realized, while my must have FireFox Lava Red was still compatible and at least visible at the top of the screen, this build by DEFAULT (see below) for "branding"D: ....has replaced welcome screen about:blank with new tab.

Meaning you open PM and most of the page is white with PM logo in the middle. Not my beloved and needed LavaFox red.....cept for the top.

However insane, this is killing me. I have delved exhaustively to find a way of changing back to ABOUT:BLANK....AND there is NO WAY.:'🙂mad:

From release notes:

Pale moon 25

· Update branding images for official/unofficial logo, and some about: pages.
· Add a new type of "blank new tab" page with logo-styling.
This logo page will be the default setting (instead of about:blank).

Thanks so much for any input re this, if only for me, major issue

Edit: just discovered on PM Forum....I am not the only crazy human who hates this logo page! Forget, can not find a way of changing it.

I am not especially fond of the logo based blank new tab page. I am quite used to using the normal about:blank with a userContent.css tweak to make it solid black. In attempting to restore this page I find I am able to do so with the new tab page by changing the value in about:config to about:blank, but I can't find a way to override the logo page for the start-up page. Setting it to start on a blank page uses the logo page, and setting it to use my home page and setting the home page to about:blank still seems to use the logo page for some reason. I'm not sure if you would class this as a bug or if this is as intended, but it is definitely something of an annoyance to me as I find brightly themed pages to be harsh on my eyes and I dislike the distraction of a logo on something that I desire no content on. Additionally I could set up a simple blank html file to use or something like that, but it doesn't beat the convenience of using something that was already present in the browser and which would be a little cleaner, leaving the URL bar blank, ready for typing, which I assume a custom home page file would not.

I'm confused, what page are you talking about here? I've upgraded to PM 25 and I don't see what you mean. The 'about:newtab' page looks identical to me (I have it as my home page as well) to how it used to, about:blank is blank as expected.

- edit - one negative thing I've noticed is that ABP seems to have disappeared from the UI completely, I can't re-add its button through UI customisation either. It appears to be working still though.

This might help:

Welcome back Virgorising! 🙂

Here's what I did:
- Go into Edit->Preferences, General
- Select "Show my home page" beside "When Pale Moon starts"
- Change the Home Page to say "about:blank"
- Type about:config in the URL and search for "browser.newtab.url"
- Click on the Value column and change it from "about:logopage" to "about:blank"

O! This kindness making me emotional. I mean it. Thanks sooo much!

I am going to try this right this second...spent an hour trying to fix it yesterday and failed!

Update: pls C screenie. I have no more Preferences option when I expand Edit! Cause I looked for it yesterday and could not find anything even related. What is wrong with my PM which is clearly not wrong with yours?

K.....tell me, do you use a theme on yr PM? carried over from FX? Using the special add on "Style"......cause I do.

I could boot into my WD mechanical backup drive and open PM and not let it update and make a screenie re what PM WITHOUT this selfielike, sickening, white logo screen looks like at my end. I mean looked like past tense before update.

I'm using "Furfox Tail Twister", which is just a persona, not a full-on theme. The only way I've made the page appear that you've screenshotted is by typing in about:logopage in the address bar myself.

@ Victorian_Gray

I'll give that a try, thanks.

O! How crazy stupid of them! A whole new version of this buggy build? Does this mean, since they say uninstall current version before downloading, I will have to configure it all over again in every way?

Thanks for finding this, I did not find it! And I sat here and delved for over an hour yesterday.

Yes, I get logopage and tried everything to return it to about:blank and COULD NOT. In puter-related things I am very picky. I can not be happy without my Lavafox Red. It's shallow but true. Had I not been able to use Style app to make my Lavafox Red fuction normally in PM, I would have stuck with increasingly bloated FX.

I just removed the standard version of ABP with PM25 already installed, then installed that PM-specific version of ABP, which appears to have worked.

What's this 'style' app you're referring to? I tried searching in the add-ons list but couldn't find it.

Hold on, I will find it. I am getting crazier now, only way I can restore my usual GUI with Lavafox Red in the body of the interface is by typing about:blank into the address bar. Which I would have to do every time I open this messed up build. SICKENING. It wasn't broke and they tried to fix it.

SORRY, I am insane and so, got it wrong: not style...it's STYLISH.

Wut is wrong with them? This was in BETA for a long time; they could have fixed all this stuff!!!!

I mean it, something has overtaken them.....some GREMLIN. Some ALIEN.

Update: K, I removed ABP and downloaded that new version Mr. Tobin whose PALE MOON FOR REAL FACE I am getting repulsed by now, wrote.....and let it install. Nothing changed at all.

This man is ingesting way too many refined carbs.

Just found this; jus realized, the reason Amanda Bynes went nuts and went to the looney bin, is, she updated her Pale Moon to 25.:|

reply to Davesnothere
What about themes? I had read in Pale Moon forums that ALL full themes and ALL Personas were going to be forked and would not work only the default theme would be available until PM devs fixed the full themes to work properly with PM (never mind that they worked fine on PM 24 for me on Windows 8 Pro they still supposedly all don't work right according to PM devs).

On Win 10 Preview, I could not use any Persona AND my favorite extensions (Tree Style Tabs and Informational Tab as that produced a blurry mess and no vertical scroll bar). With my full theme (Red Cats) Informational Tab will not install as support is dropped as of yesterday for Fx versions below 30 so I had to install an older version - the version I have on my Win 8 Pro machine with PM 24). The older version works fine. BUT Tree Style Tabs on Win 10 Preview has problems with my full theme but mostly works.

If I am having problems with extensions on PM 24 just because it is installed on Win 10 Preview....I can just imagine the bad things awaiting when I install ver 25.

Now at the point where I am trying to find a way of rolling back to previous build or downloading one. Impossible on both counts. Can only get 25 and can't roll back to earlier.

I mean it, I see miseries posted all over the net re 25. Moon Faced Man Tobin.....just shot them.

Even considered booting into my backup drive and doing whole new clone to this, my SSD and endure writing 130 GBs to it in one fell swoop! But I haven't updated backup drive for a while, so that is not viable, I wold loose many files I need. Plus, I would get nag screens to update ongoing.

This makes me so sad, given what PM started out to be.

Found 24.7.1 on Old versions, just downloaded the installer. I am trying to not Dump PM altogether and capitulate and go back to FX, and I no longer trust Pale Moon Faced guy to undo what he did in this build.

And, how odd: all the complaints I see on the net re 25 are different! For some, what is still working at my end is not working at their ends. But I am running W7 64-bit, so the bugs may be OS specific, who knows?

I should be thrilled most things still working here, but I am not.

Fughed aboud it. Just hit the new installation file and got this file is CORRUPT. Tthere is no place on the entire net U can get other than 25 no matter what a hyperlink says!!!!! U morph into a selfie obsessed Fascist, you loose your fan base.

Edit: Jus found this, below, I am clearly not the only one whose head is exploding re 25. Only thing, I seem too stupid to figure out how to even try a rollback. Cause I have. Tried to find a way, I mean.

Alex Vakkas If you all roll back, nothing will ever work. Contact the relevant websites/programmers and get them to update, instead of rolling back and waiting.

    • Pale Moon I would "like" this comment 10 times if I could. We've contacted the relevant people ourselves before release over the past 2 months or so, with a sad low response, resulting in this compatibility speed-bump. I do hope more voices (and not more rollbacks) will happen so the relatively small changes needed will be implemented by extension devs.

Update: I am disgusted. I despised what FX turned into, but, at least I could keep my LavaFox Red. I was beyond thrilled to have learned about PM right here way back!

But, I just delved re migrating my bookmarks and settings from PM to FX, cause I am positive Mr. Pale Moon Face will never give up this insane logopage of narcissism. Only one thing: when I hit bookmarks tab, there is no way to organize them to save them as HTML or export them.

So, I delved more and found this app mentioned on Major Geeks called TRANSMUTE. Says it can transmute settings form any browser to any other browser.
http://www.gettransmute.com/download/trialpay/?os=windows
I got the free version zipped. I will now unzip it and see if using it, I can migrate all my (now infested with Ebola) PM settings to a new FX....which I never ever thought I would go back to!

I know, I should just chill and hope Pale Moon Face restores normal configurability in 25.
_______________________________________________
O No! I am so gullible. Transmute zip file was SNAKE OIL. Empty. Then got the portable free version, and it too is snake oil and empty. So now I have bloated new FX with no way to migrate Pale Moon anything.
______________________________________
Correction: I was wrong. I just did manage to export them to my desktop as HTML. Now, I will see if I can carry them into new disgusting FX.
_________________________________________
Update: I migrated things into my new bloated FX, did configuring. I feel both better and worse. Am writing from new bloated FX right now. Worse thing: I am now moved to uninstall PM....the new bastardized, head exploding everything version. Buh Bye Pale Moon Face......was lovely until your pancreas went into overdrive to deal with the refined carbs. Truth is, my take is he (THEY) could never really deal with the shared foundation code with FX is wut it is! No distancing beyond a certain point is without REPERCUSSIONS. NOR NECESSARY.

Not to mention how much data I just wrote to my poor little SSD!

Maybe Stylish? That's the one I'm using and it's working in PM25 for me:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?p=36350837#post36350837

Yes! I corrected in my response and also put up a link to the add on. But my Stylish re Lavafox red is still working in 25.....on PAPER, cept in the main body of the GUI.....AS depicted in original screenie.

Terrible this is....needless waste of lifeminutes.

And check this out: when we type about:config in the address bar, that is supposed to open the ensuing screens to, after a warning, allow us to Modify AND CHANGE IT TO ABOUT:BLANK. When I tried it 27 times in PM 25, it refused to take me to the server.

Edit/correction: It takes me to the server, but I can't get beyond this point below when I hit enter to continue to change things to about:blank. I hit "enter" and nuthin happens. Cause Pale Moon Face guy saw to it that we can not change what he has now put in place. Unless I am missin sumthin.

WEEEEEEEEEE have been robbed of normal OPTIONS IN THIS BUILD. And, according to the release notes, purposefully.

Update: Well I tried again....to change the string value to about:blank. This time I thought it was actually working and that I had actually managed to change it! Of course, that was insane of me, cause it was an illusion (see below). This guy has written some crazy glue code to keep that logo screen there until Global Warming gets all of us and we don need browsers anymore.

See this? It changed...NOTHING, DESPITE it now appears to say string value is now about:blank.
357nkub.jpg

WAIT!!!!!!! OMG! It DID CHANGE A LITTLE!!!!!!! Just saw I can now temporarily hit the delete button on the logo tab and my LavaFox red appears! Does PM still open with the logo screen? Is ISIS into beheading? YES. But see, I could never close the new logo tab before. So, changing the string value got the logoscreen somewhat unstuck. Let me see if I can live with this as it is.

See this? How normal it is now? As long as you close the logo tab which U now can to see the Lavafox red in the entire GUI and not the Moon face white! I do believe I can live with this now! Only took two days.

For anyone having this issue:
In the address bar: about:config
I did not get the usual warning.
In the address field of that screen: browser.newtab.url
Hitting enter does nothing (did not for me), so right click on the above and see if you get modify. Goal is to find a way of entering about:blank
If you can change the string value, you will be able to hit the close button on the new tab bar and the evil white and PM logo will go away. But only as long as you keep the browser open. Not that terrible that I gotta hit the button every time I open PM.

Now......I will uninstall my new huge FX.....gotten only out of desperation.:|

Hi VR, it's good to have you back, your enthusiasm is contagious. I updated to 25 and the browser constantly crashed, so I quickly uninstalled and went back to 24.7.2. Perhaps I'll try it on a fresh Windows install just to see if it actually does work in that scenario vs. updating. Patch Tuesday is this week, must build new Windows images anyway.

Wow. I am gob smacked and so moved by all this warmth and kindness. I mean it.

Now, so sorry to hear 25 crashed! And pls share wut do you mean by crashed? But dying to know how you rolled it back to 24.7.2. Did you employ system restore? Mine is never on, so I did not have that option.

I got the "PaleMoon has stopped working and must close" or whatever the message is when a program crashes. Crashed repeatedly. I uninstalled 25 using CCleaner, chose to keep my settings, then downloaded 24.7.2 from the Palemoon archives ftp site ftp://archive:get@ftp.palemoon.org/ using IE11 (I know, heresy). I re-installed 24.7.2 and it was like nothing ever happened.
