Yes, it does. The way I remember it is by the Cartoon Network bit about NTSC standing for Never The Same Color, since NTSC is one of the few standards that allows users to adjust picture tint, saturation, etc.

Fortunately I have a network adaptor and HD already installed. Bully for me!

Now I wonder, will this allow you to copy backups to the HD, or copy disc images to the HD from other sources? (like over a network) If so this will be the modchip killer indeed.

Im wondering about the copying backups too. They stated that you can't transfer over a network though.

I hate hearing people talk about their 'backups'. Seriously, who the f really backs up playstation 2 games? Wait 2 months, and they'll be $20. Stop stealing them.

I'm actually thinking about getting this for LEGAL reasons. My PS2 can't read games for sh!t. Recently bought MVP baseball 2004 and it takes FOREVER to load. Hopefully I can get the game loaded onto a harddrive and never have a problem again.

At first people thought non-solder Xbox modchips were vaporware as well. Pretty much any astounding leap in game tech has been thought to be vaporware at one point or another. Take the Phantom for example.

Oh wait, bad example. :p

I do find it suspicious that the app comes on a legitimate, stamped PS2 disc. Unless tech laws have gigantic loopholes in China (or wherever this thing is made) I don't think they can legally make PS2 discs... unless they're making PS1 discs. the PS2 is downward compatible. Hrm....

Yeah, well I'm sure a lot of folks would just come out and say "tEh gAEMZ I dleD off tEh intArwEB" but the mods don't like it when you do that. :p

You can copy your backups if you have a mod-chip installed.

I would imagine it's like the old Gameshark discs. They weren't licensed by Sony and used their own discs which worked most of the time.

If this thing is real, then Sony's lawyers will get to earn their pay.:)

Well I had a post but the f%$#ing thing deleted my text. Sigh.

In the official FAQ it says three things I found interesting:
1) They will not say whether you can copy "backups".
2) It will not work with PS1 games. :(
3) You have to use a HDD such that 40gig <= HDD <= 120gig.

#1 makes me think that they're in the same boat as DVD makers with region-free stuff. In the US DVD makers cannot make DVD players that come region-free by default, and cannot provide instructions on how to make their DVD players region free or whether or not they can be made region free. However, there is nothing that says they can't have the capabilities. I suspect Sony said they couldn't outright endorse it or say how to do it, but they wouldn't sue them if the stuff could do it.

#2 makes me sad. :( I wanted to put FF4 - FFX-2 on my HDD, along with the complete Silent Hill series and that wonder of wonders, Intelligent Qube. I suspect some enterprising modder will find a way to make it possible though, using the PS equivalent of the VCD header trick.

#3 means I don't know what to do with those old <40gig HDDs kicking around my place. :/

Well still, if this isn't vaporware it's gonna rock.

Y'know, they said the XBox wouldn't be pirated either....

Have you missed the entire point of this thread? This thing is the choice in pirating solutions.

You can't copy "backup" games unless you have a mod chip according to the review. And this HDDLoader is not compatible with Gameshark.

I give it... ehhh... 5 minutes before someone finds a way around the "backup" protection. Besides, there isn't anything stopping you from manually copying the disc image onto the HDD via your computer. All you'd need would be an external drive bay (for convenience only) and something which would make images in the proper format. (whatever the format is)

I'm not surprised that it isn't compatible with GameShark; in the past GSes have worked because they interrupt the data flow between the DVD drive and the CPU. Since HDDLoader probably uses this same idea to re-route the data requests to the HDD it directly interferes with that operation. The only way it will get GS support is if they incorporate GS into the HDDLoader program.

So where was this review? Was it a source reliable enough to prove we aren't talking about vaporware?

They say swap magic will let you copy backups to the HDD also.

HDLoader, then swap magic, then backup.

Its a program for playing backups for people who are too lazy to install a modchip.
You basically boot with the swap magic disc, then use a device to open the dvd tray without pressing the eject button, then load your back game in it. That way the ps2 bypasses the check to see if the dvd is an original pressed dvd or a backup.

Just google ps2 swap magic and you'll get a gazillion hits.

www.ps2ownz.com main page has the news about backups working with hdloader + swap magic.
