HD 6870 launches Oct 21, slower than 5870?

NDA lifts October 21, 2010. The HD 6800 series launching is based on the Barts core. The renaming scheme is true. (Antilles = 6990, Cayman XT = 6970, Cayman Pro = 6950) The slides on vr-zone/chiphell are fan-made... no telling if the specs are real, but they got the naming scheme wrong.

Pctuning.cz:

No manufacturer (I asked three of them) has Radeons HD 6800 in their roadmap, they are not going to be available until November (probably not enough cards has been made for the launch), actual launch has been probably delayed until early November (reviews in October)
- Two cards will be launched simultaneously - Radeon HD 68x0
- No cards with the HD 6700 moniker exist
- Performance matches their name, no need to worry, they are the performance successors of HD 5850/70
- Radeons HD 5000 will still be sold, they're going to cover the rest of the portfolio until the end of the year, what's probably going to change are their names and prices
- Many things have changed in the architecture, 3D features, new capabilities when it comes to video coding and handling the output (picture) not sure what the last part is about
- Some slides, that we've seen pop-up on the internet, even though photoshopped, show the whole picture, but you need to combine them and I'm not revealing which and what exactly

PS. I'm gonna show you blurred picture of the card tomorrow (it's from another presentation, which I've just got)

My head is spinning from all the renaming and conflicting info. As long as the general idea that Barts XT at ~ 250 will be close to 5870 in performance, we are good to go, regardless what they call it.

I've been on this site allmost 10 years, and I have never seen so many leaks, fake or mabe fake or true.

It's like a gpu circus. 🙂

Maybe it's just referring to the flagship launch guidelines despite launching mid-range. Who knows if it isn't referring to the Nov (possibly 21st lol) launch of the Cayment Pro/XT.

How do we know these aren't fake? Wasn't one of the rumors that AMD was leaking false info to find leakers?

Anyways, drop the price of HD 5870 to $200 and let me get one used for $150 and I'll have a very merry christmas 😀

As you guys say, it really is quite funny, all these leaks. Good anti-leak practice however. If you can't totally stop the leaks, then just add 10-20 times as many fake and conflicting ones. None, or at least few of us here will ever be able to sort it out.

😀

Absolutely, people here and on other tech forums need to really dial down the pressure cooker here. When most of these chip companies get ready to release new products, much of the leaks are going to be fake, and probably planted by the chip makers themselves. AMD is actually known to do this on a regular basis pending major releases of their products.

At this point, any supposed leaks, whether naming scheme, benchmarks, architectural details, specifications, or whatever other information are potentially planted to dilute the real information, and all of it should be treated as such until we hear from a reliable source publicly.

If I understood the new naming scheme correctly, the 6870 is meant to replace the 5770, in the overall line-up, right? Were people expecting the upcoming mid-lower tier card to beat the fastest single chip card from the previous generation? That would be quite impressive if it turned out to be so. Regarding the pricing, I like RussianSensation's suggestion however I get the feeling that this will turn out to be too good to be true.

Errr what renaming? That's not renaming any cards, that's just changing the naming scheme.....in which case, who cares, as long as the price/performance is there--that's all that matters. If they decide to gouge because of a lack of nvidia competition, then **** you AMD, we'll buy clearance 460's and 470's and 5xxx series cards.

Now...if they are renaming like...the 5770 to the 6770 or something, then yeah, that's messed up. =p

A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet? 🙂

I still like to point out again that nothing on the slides say Barts is 68xx. Those slides could very well be from the Cayman material that according to those slides could launch Nov 21. If they hadn't blocked the month and if the month was indeed Oct then I would be more inclined to believe it's from the Barts launch material.

Pardon me if this is a dumb q, but could the blacked-out date be Sept 21, not Oct 21? As in, the document was sent out Sept 21 to reviewers, and that's all the date is referencing--not launch dates?

If so then I don't know if it's a big deal or not for AMD to detail the architecture behind 68xx cards even if the first GPUs released are 67xx, because 67xx is just a cut-down version of 68xx. So "6800" could just be a shorthand for "Cayman-style architecture."

Thanks for the heads up, as far as the naming scheme goes, is it really so hard to wait till the 21st!?!?!?!?

I'm wondering why anyone would care.

I generally follow this stuff heartily pre-launch, but there have been so many rumors going around that i'm out of caring.

The 200 dollar card will be exciting for those who didn't jump on the 460 for it's great performance at that price point. I think a lot of enthusiats love to read and see the numbers for the high end, but the enthusiast mid range is the area i'm hoping to see some marked improvement from AMD.

Though the 460 1gb at 800mhz, a clock that appears more than reasonable to achieve on 90%+ of the cards, is going to be hard to match/beat at this price point. Realizing AMD's offering can also overclock, the superb OCability of the 460 is a huge positive for it current positioning in the GPU playing field.

With all the BS out there at this point, somebody is going to be right.

I echo some of the other sentiment in this thread: Call me when NDA is up or a Chinese website gets a real screenshot.

Would people stop saying they're renaming Barts? You can't rename something that was never publicly released or given a name. It might simply be coming out with a different name than you/we expected, or a different naming scheme.

OT:
Way too many leaks, I have no idea what's coming out when, nor how fast any of it will be. WTH, why can't we get some reliable information?

Or everybody is wrong and the 6XX0 series is going to be a rebrand of Nvidias 6X00 series with a built on bobcat core.

impressive.

unlikely that they would have changed the naming scheme unless barts xt is >= 5870. and really, if it's 5% slower in dx9 and 5-15% faster in dx 10-11 + has 2x tessellation power wouldn't that still be an improvement? my only concern is that they're now going to charge more like $300-$350 for barts xt and leave barts pro to fight with gtx 460/70 in the low/mid 200's. if so then I might end up keeping this gtx 460 in my main rig longer than anticipated.

It's not the first time AMD has really fired up their 'dezinformation' engines but now they are really spinning in high perf mode, that's for sure. 🙂

They gave people different info re: Eyefinity but nobody leaked it, according to the AT article. http://www.anandtech.com/show/2937 I wonder if they hide info in leaked slides so they can trace back leaks to the sources, or stuff like that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steganography I know that films have codes sometimes so that movie studios can trace back a cam copy of a movie to the theater in which it originated.
