technically the slavs ere there before the tatars but the russians are not those particular slavs and the greeks and such were there a long time ago also. the tatars have been there since the mongols conquered the area. anyone have a history on the eastern regions and the ownership of them over the past 500 to 1000 years

History is interesting, but we live in the present, and in the present, Crimea is 60% Russian. The only reason it's even in the Ukraine is because Khruschev decided to put it there.

There is some pretty raw footage here so be cautious. Basically, you can see what I believe is pro-western opposition advancing towards a government position with not much more than wooden and sheet metal shields. Marksmen open up on the group.

This is why civilians need the right to bear arms and access to proper training.

They dont know that 7.63 will punch right through a wooden desk.
And neon yellow makes for a fantastic target.
And helmets really only protect against shrapnel. I havent seen anybody using grenades or mortars yet.

KIEV, Ukraine — Abandoned by his own guards and reviled across the Ukrainian capital but still determined to recover his shredded authority, President Viktor F. Yanukovych fled Kiev on Saturday to denounce what he called a violent coup, as his official residence, his vast, colonnaded office complex and other once impregnable centers of power fell without a fight to throngs of joyous citizens stunned by their triumph.

OK, the ball is in Putin's court.

Obama better be ready.

It is pathetic that Russians(Slavs) consider Russians, Ukrainians and Belorussians as same people. This type of thinking will bite them hard when they will realize, after repeated attempts, that Ukraine and Belarus have no interest to be under the umbrella of Russia.

ready for what? To get us involved in another bullshit conflict?

Pardon me, but that's a dumb remark.

Not get ready for war, get ready for Putin's move.

If Putin doesn't make one, fine. But I do not, at this time, believe Putin is willing to 'lose' the Ukraine. I.e., have it move closer to, if not join, the EU.

The biggest beneficiary of the realization you hope for would be the Russian people, whose corrupt government is spending tens of billions of their taxpayer money on propping up other corrupt governments in Ukraine and Belarus, while ignoring problems in Russia itself.

Isn't that the justification that Israel uses for it's existence?

while ignoring the same arguement for any one else

"It is probably ... during Iron Age I [that] a population began to identify itself as 'Israelite'," differentiating itself from its neighbours via prohibitions on intermarriage, an emphasis on family history and genealogy, and religion.

great for tolerance and open mind views. not ignorant at all

Russian nationalist clown Zhirinovskiy proposed the idea of having Yanukovich transported to Belarus. Here is the ticker.... Yanukovich tried to fly to Russia and he was denied entry on a plane by officers of MVD(Interior Ministry).

hope this does not get any worse

but the crimean tatars are a martial people so they may offer some good resistance if the russians start attacking them. not sure if russians will attack them or just go after pro ukrainian supporters although

that said the russians are a hate filled racist mob and if things start to turn against them they may rout very easily and flee

Not our problem. If the Russians want to fuck up Ukraine - then the two countries need to figure it out themselves or with the UN. The US can't be the world's police - the last 20 years should have made that sufficiently clear.

There is a search for Yanukovich and other representatives for MVD(Interior Ministry). A couple of politicians from Har'kov' province have defected to Russia.

Lukashenko is nervous, stating that there will be no Maidan in Belarus. "Мы живем в динамично изменяющемся мире. То здесь, то там на планете вспыхивают очаги напряженности. Поэтому нам нельзя терять бдительность. Учиться надо на ошибках других и не допустить даже малейших проявлений нестабильности в нашей стране."

In underlined portion he says, "And we must not let any instability get into our country." Like any 'president' with no brain, he is delusional regarding stability of Belarus. Record high inflation, another potential round of currency devaluation, massive corruption, and stagnant economy. Let's hope Maidan spreads to Belarus!

These are the Western Ukrainian nationalists (the guys flying red and black flags) who are running the show now because they are the ones providing the muscle behind the revolution. They are considered fascist and absolutely despised in the East.
If the new government is in any way associated with these guys, it will not be accepted in the east and the south of the country. But these guys have the power to destabilize and overthrow any new government, so the new government won't be able to marginalize them. Which means the threat of a split in Ukraine is very real.
