Ok, so if some you guys commute 150+ per day, how long is the commute? 2 hours+? So if it is the typical 8/9 - 5 job how early do you have to wake up? 4 or 5 o' clock? I can't imagine waking up that early. Then the drive home is also 2+ hours, meaning you won't get home until 7 or 8. One hour for dinner, and you will have to sleep by 10 or 11 to get 6 hours of sleep. LOL i get 7 hours a day right and I'm still complaining.

I probably can't do this unless it is a 4 hour per day full time position w/ great benefits. Other than that..yikes.

Does anyone know what sort of mileage a manual Miata gets?
I don't know how tall you are, but if you're more than about 5'10", stay away from that car. I drove my Aunt's Miata about 2 miles before my legs cramped up.

I'm 5'6" so that's not an issue.:p

It takes me about an hour and a half to go the 87.5 miles one way. I get up around 6:30am, get to work at 9:30, leave at 5:00, home at 6:00.

Let's see. . . Wonderful, delightful, hassle-free, heavenly. . . And more!

(I've worked 2 miles from home for the last 4 years.)

My commute is about 51 miles round trip, and when I purchase a house in one of my prospective areas it will probably up to double. The difference in housing prices though between the Seattle metro area and the South Pierce county country area are so steep that it is worth it, especially since I hate metro areas. I work a 10-6, so traffic isn't bad, and I have an MP3 CD player in my car. The car is also pretty comfortable, and I like to drive. Gives me time to think and compose before work and wind down after.

I'm 6'2" and I was very uncomfortable in it. I felt like I was in a shoe. ;)

Bunch of guys at work here in Columbus live over 100 miles one way. They use the "ride share"program and it pays some gas and such but your looking at 1.5 hours each way. One other guy commutes 6 hours but he comes up and stays in a camper for his 4 days on and goes back home only for his 4 days off. Hows that for a commute.

i find it worth while to pay a premium to live somewhat closer to work\school. of course, the premium i am willing to pay is not going to be high.

I'd rather ride a train that far than drive that far every single day. At least the train generally takes the same amount of time every day, and you can sleep or read on the train. The train usually doesn't get stuck in traffic, and it doesn't slow down to 3 MPH when it snows.

I do like to drive, but driving the same roads at the same time every day, and leaving slack time for traffic when it rains or snows is too sucky. I had about a 30 mile daily commute at one of my jobs, and it got old.

One morning, on the way to work, I was number 4 in a 5 car pile-up. I went to the doctor for whiplash and took the day off. Luckily (or unluckily) I had just bought that car and hadn't sold my old one yet, so I wasn't without wheels. That made that
same old drive every day that much worse, seeing my fading skid marks, looking at the center divider wall that I got way too good a look at waiting for the police and tow trucks. That old drive was getting older and more grating every day.

I have a 110 mile daily commute, so I know the feeling! I gotta admit it used to be pretty fun zipping through New York highway traffic and blaring tunes from my CD changer, until I got a speeding ticket and the tunes started getting old. Now, I can't wait to find a place closer to where I work so I can cut down on the mileage that is racking up on my poor car!

30 miles or 30 minutes, whichever one is shorter is the longest I'll do for a commute. Anything more than that and I'll move closer or get a different job. 3 hours worth of commuting just turns an 8 hour day (which is closer to 9) to an 11 or 12 hour day. And you don't make a dime during those three hours.

Life is just to freaking short to spend 1/5 of your waking hours in a damn car. Too much wear on you. Too much wear on the car. And if you have a family or a S/O it's a serious burden on them too.

Uhg. No thanks.

another factor would be the car you're using to drive 100 miles or more...eg if you have an SUV or truck....maybe calculate what you pay on gas just to go to work and back :)

I figured out that each round trip (about 100 miles) costs me ~$8 with the current price of gas. :(

when i gave a resignation letter to my last job, i moved thinking i can commute from my new place for the remaning two weeks i was there. for the first week, i commuted 200 miles a day (its exactly 100 miles from my house to work +/- 1 mile) from san diego to irvine. after that first week, i just decided to take alternative transportation via amtrak.

Dang, school is about 45 miles each way for me, but work is only 10 miles... School is only 2 days a week, so it's tolerable. I couldn't stand much more of a drive to work though, traffic is terrible!
