80 miles round trip meaning about 35-40 minutes each way. Almost exclusively Interstate except about 5 or 6 miles of the trip so that's good. I see there are many worse off than me in this thread. Frankly, I am tired of the distance but I do like the separation of my home from work. It's also prevented me from having to come in on a Saturday a few times because my boss realizes how far away I live so I only would have to if it was absolutely necessary.

Two words to make your commute much, much more tolerable:

satellite radio

I don't even have a CD player in my car.

:Q

My commute is 73 miles each way and there's just no way I could handle it without a CD player.

It's usually AM radio. I catch the news and Glenn Beck in the morning. Then Rush and more news on the way home. Sometimes I'll see if there's anything good playing on the FM side.

I drive about 100 miles round-trip. But it is not unusual for me to have to drive over 400 miles in one day, having to run errands and such. Yes, that means about 8 hours behind the wheel in one day :)

sucks bad, doesn't it. I used to do 160 per day. Did that for about 1.5 years, and couldn't take it any more.

Then got a job 9 blocks away :)

Same here. I don't mind the morning commute, thanks to Howard Stern, but the afternoon drive can get boring.

12 miles one way for me. Takes me about 15-20 minutes with a couple mile stint on the freeway (there are routes I can take that avoid the freeway but those add 5-10 minutes to my commute).

I used to drive 70+ miles a day through very tough San Diego freeway traffic. On Fridays it would take me an hour and a half to drive 35 miles. It was so bad that I started taking the train from Oceanside (where I live) to Sorrento Valley and riding my bike the last 9 miles to work. It would take the the same amount of time to get home by bike/train as it would if I drove. That's just fvcked. It was amusing to look at the traffic on the 15 North as I rode my bike over Carol Canyon road and gazed down on 5 lanes of parked cars stretching for miles on the Northbound side.

I love my commute now.

How about these two words:

talk radio.

Or how about:

Car Pool.

Having someone else in the car makes the commute much more enjoyable (and saves quite a bit in gas/milage on the car)

80 miles a day right now. Moving to a different job in two weeks where it will be 40 miles a day.

Used to live across the street from where I worked for a couple years. I feel like I am paying back for all those hours I didn't commute now...

I live .05 miles from where I work. with the roads, it's probably close to .08...

I am moving to avoid a 100 mile commute to my new job though. No one can live really close to it.

I had to do that for a short time. No choice, either give up a killer job or become a manager at walmart. Eventually we were able to sell our house and move closer to my job. Sometimes you just don't have a choice.

Oh, I know! It varies wildly for me. I have a 2.5 mile commute each way, but it sometimes takes me 15-20 minutes if I have to sit through this light for 3-4 cycles. I've seen mileage as low as 20 mpg for driving like that, but in the summer on the highway, I get 34-36, even with the AC on. In the winter I manage 30 on the highway. This is in a 92 Miata w/a 1.6l engine. The 1.8 liter of the 94+ gets less... maybe 3 mpg less overall?

I take the Metra lines, which are luxury compared to the "L". You drink booze until 7:00 PM on the metra. Some of the trains actually sell food and drinks on them.

Riding the train for 45 minutes isn't nearly as bad as driving for 45 minutes. You can basically relax and unwind on the train. You can:
Eat
Drink...

That's what I do on my commute :)
You can't eat or drink on trains here... where are you ? Is that the "L" ?

I don't know how tall you are, but if you're more than about 5'10", stay away from that car. I drove my Aunt's Miata about 2 miles before my legs cramped up.

I'm 5'11" and nearly got up to 190 before hitting a diet up. The car was still comfortable, even for long 8+ hour trips.

Is it warm? Motorcycle in good weather- cuts down a gas usage, and plus, you can roar through traffic inbetween lances when the police(wo)men aren't looking. :D

6 miles and 10 minutes each way.
4 stop signs and 3 traffic lights on the way.
Very light traffic.
I think I'll ride my bike tomorrow.
