I still don't know if I've had COVID or not. Had about three fairly bad colds in the last couple of years, all of them during the summer months. One or all of them _might_ have been one of the more cold-like variants of COVID, but as tests ceased to be easily available some time ago I don't really know. They could just have been bad colds. Had every vaccine I've been offered, so presumably would have had some resistance to COVID.

(I gather that there were a lot of colds going around as soon as the various COVID precautions were dropped, as less-novel/serious viruses that had been suppressed by the anti-COVID measures suddenly started to circulate again)

Had to get my COVID and Flu vacs today. Was going to do it a month ago, then Helene took out the power for weeks, and it all had to be thrown out.

Given that RFK Jr. will be in charge of anything healthcare related by early spring, figured this will be my last.

Just think kiddies, no more fear when mom takes you to the doctor, as no more shots. Oh, you say she is taking you to the doctor because you have a fever of 103, little red dots all over your body, can't stop coughing your lungs out, and your legs don't work? But no needles!

/s (I hope)
But I did get my shots today, RSV next week.

It was weird, I had a really ugly cold in July of 2022 of all times. Couldn't even smell a big bottle of vinegar held up to my nose and taking a big whiff and I just ate ramen in plain water without any flavoring for a couple of days because what's the point of adding flavoring I couldn't detect at all? Yet I came out negative taking two PCR tests a week apart.

Got my 9th covid shot today, Pfizer. I've gotten every shot available to me ASAP except this one because I wanted to put it off until just before (well, 6 weeks) I am going to a big family function middle of January 2025. Had my flu shot a couple months ago.
I never got Moderna.. me, my wife, my dad.. we went exclusively on Pfizer.
All mine were Moderna except the last 2 because all they had was Pfizer.

I haven't been sick since before the pandemic. The silver lining on this for me is that I've learned to be way more cautious.

I saw info about an AI generated study recently that suggests that according to data mining an estimated 23% of the populace of USA has experienced or now has LONG COVID.

The analysis suggests that nearly 23% of U.S. adults experience the symptoms of long COVID, according to results published Nov. 8 in the journal Med. That's much higher than the 7% prevalence of long COVID that's been suggested by other studies, researchers said.Nov 8, 2024

There haven't been head to head comparisons, as far as I'm aware, but I'd venture to say that the shots available provide roughly equivalent protection. Best for people to just get the one they can get their hands on easily, instead of holding out for something else.

A new study came out this week, the best time to get the vaccine is 2.7 months before an outbreak or large event. Since the disease is seasonal and since you usually know when you have a large event coming up, you can estimate when is best for you.

"On average, the study found that optimal booster dates precede peak COVID-19 transmission by about 2.7 months, allowing individuals to maximize their protection during periods of higher viral circulation."

At least for the northern hemisphere, early fall is best:
"The optimal timing for COVID-19 booster administration is highly location-specific but generally falls in early autumn for the Northern Hemisphere. Administering boosters in September or October can provide up to three to four times more protection against infection compared to booster shots given later in the year."

But, your 6 weeks should be pretty darn good.

I was having a colonoscopy done today and I was asked did you take the covid vaccines? Yep.. up to date with all boosters.

Overheard other patients.. did you take covid vaccine?
A1: Unfortunately but only the first
A2: No I'd be crazy to take it
A3: No I don't trust it

I chose J&J for my first vax without the flu shot believing and hoping that it would be less impactful on my MS. Didn’t matter because I tested positive for Covid two days later!! (symptom-free) That shit kicked my ass for five days!

I chose J&J sans flu for the 2nd shot for the same reason. No immediate reaction that time. LG fever and sore injection site that night. Resolved by the next morning.

Third flu/vax was Moderna since the pharmacy tech said that was all they had. No immediate reaction, same thing that happened with the last experience; both injection sites sore at bedtime & a LG fever which resolved the next morning.

I was at my PCP yesterday for an annual cbc lab appointment. She offered Pfizer as thats what they received from the county.

Ohman… same initial reaction as previous shots but today I’m a hot mess! I can’t seem to get warm, runny nose, and my spasticity is through the roof.

The fever is coming down thankfully!

I'm quite sure the data showed a little better protection from Moderna but the side effects are worse too and its probably due to the Moderna vaccine having a larger 100mcg dose compared to 30mcg for Pfizer. People I've talked too also said that they were KO'd from Moderna compared to Pfizer.
At this point 'm not getting any more shots for covid unless theres some new dangerous strain out there. I've gotten a few light covid infections since now and then to top off my immunity - usually from people who just got well from covid.

Vaccines? Hah, all you need is your grape flavored Ivermectin gummy once a day to cure cancer, roll back aging, make your maga dick at least 4 inches longer, improve your aim, and block the chinese chemtrail flu.

Realistically, you can't compare the trials. There are too many underlying differences - different populations with different trial sites and differing data collection procedures and measurements. What we know for certain is the data each vaccine generated in their own clinical trial program, and they were all quite effective at reducing hospitalization and death. And the follow-up data with boosters and new annual formulas continue to support that.

Anecdotal stories about how people felt is also not data - they're just anecdotes. I would gladly take a vaccine that reduces my risk of hospitalization or death in exchange for some mild discomfort. Just get the flu and covid shots together; this year, I didn't even have any major side effects. Easy peasy.
---

I would add, from listening to doctors give presentations on clinical trials: broadly speaking, you can't compare stuff across different clinical trials.

The first time I got Pfizer.. I had chills and was shivering.

Second dose.. not as bad..

Third, Fourth, Five.. not as bad.

But I remembered the chills because when my wife got back from overseas.. she was acting kinda bitchy (unusual for her).. I thought it was jet lag.. let her sleep.. and then I felt chills and was shivering. Did a covid test.. both of us were positive. The covid lasted a week for her and 10 days for me. But the long covid and fatigue kicked our asses.

BTW the N-95 mask works since we didn't want to give it to my dad.. I would tell him to go to his bedroom.. put on a mask.. cook up a meal.. give it to him and then use hand sanitizer on everything (table/ plates/ spoon/ glasses).. leave the room and call him out to eat. Pretty sure it smelled bad but did that for about 2 weeks but we got through it thankfully with him not getting it.

There are people who love their family and are paranoid about protecting them and there are people paranoid about COVID vaccines and not protecting themselves or anyone else. I choose to be the first!

And I personally know 8 people who died from it.. so it's not to be messed with!

I finally got around to getting my Moderna covid and flu jabs Friday evening. The woman at CVS was great at giving shots. I didn't even feel a stick. The only thing I felt was a tiny bit of pressure. She was also right about how the covid arm would be more sore than the flu arm. I couldn't sleep on my left (covid) arm last night. I also got chills and felt a bit fevered until this afternoon. I'm still feeling a bit "hungover" though.
