I've watched a few episodes of Dave Chappelle's show on Comedy Central recently. I was personally affected in the sense that he made me laugh.

The town I went to HS in is possibly one of the most free spiritied, open minded small towns in the U.S. - the irony is that only a couple generations ago it was one of the last "Sundown towns" in the nation. There are still plenty of racist hicks remaining in the surrounding towns, however.

Slightly more on topic, I've only happened to date a girl with the same race / skin color as me a couple times. There have been times when I've gone out on dates with a girlfriend and gotten some strange looks from strangers, possibly due to the mixed race thing, but that's about it. Well, when the girl's parents are 1st generation Americans (born elsewhere), there is sometimes a little tension from that source, but nothing that can't be worked with if they trust their daughter's judgement.

Significant differences in religious beliefs are a lot harder to get around than race these days, IMO.

I met her in the fall of '98. Her brother was my roommate in college. We were always on friendly terms, but we normally just saw each other whenever her and her parents came to visit him. I also saw her on several other occasions (her grandfather's birthday party...where I first met the "evil" grandmother) at their house in Charlotte. But still, nothing more than friends. I had always made a point to talk to her and ask her how she was doing b/c she [was] very shy and I'm just like that...I talk to anyone.

A year went by before I met her again at a mutual friend's birthday party. As usual, she was very shy around the people she didn't know so I made it a point to make her feel comfortable and kept her company all night and gave her a big hug when she left (again, I'm just thinking as a friend here). We exchanged screennames and phone numbers. I IM'd her the very next day

We kept in contact over the next few months over phone and IM. I met with her and her best friend friend a couple of times to go out and have some fun. All three of us went out on numerous occassions to movies and they took me clubbin' (haha, me...clubbin'..haha). Again, just friends...

Until I came down for her birthday last year. I came to the door of her parents house and she opened the door and I was just like "HOLY MOTHER OF GAWD SHE IS BEAUTIFUL!" I had never really thought about her in that way before, but she was SMOKIN'!!!! I came in and we talked for about an hour as we waited for her best friend to meet us. THAT is where the feelings REALLY started for me...that one conversation (and it also helped that she looked delicious).

A few more months went by with us IM'ing and talking and going out (the three of us). That was until this summer when her best friend hinted to me that Elizabeth was VERY interested in me and I told her that I was VERY interested in Elizabeth. After a few more phone calls, I met at her house for a little night of reckoning. We had some alcohol and watched some TV (strangely enough, EVERY show we watched on TV had something to do with sex). We told each other how we felt and it was a BIG relief for both of us to finally get it off our chests

From that moment forward, we've been inseperable. The hardest thing for me to do was telling her brother (my best friend) that I was going out with his sister. I was afraid he was gonna kill me (I made a thread about it a while back) but he was cool. Her parents already knew me and my parents and they adore me so that was an easy one.

Anyway, sorry for the long soap opera, but I just get all giddy when I talk about her
