God damn there so many people with sour grapes in this thread.

It's called capitalism, if you can't compete, then too bad. "Protecting" American workers is really a form of communism, just like trade tariffs, it's preventing a free flow of economic activity. If China can make shoes cheaper than Americans can, then we should buy them. If India can provide IT services cheaper than Americans can, then we should buy their service.

Yes, it sucks for the people that are losing their jobs in that particular industry, but in the bigger picture economy, the benefit outweighs the loss. By buying things that others can produce for cheaper than you can, you gain what is called a Competitive Advantage in micro-economics, it is the reason that we don't raise our own cattle for beef, or plant corn for veggie oil.

I completely agree. You should post your job here so we can find a cheaper replacement. Given the proper gov't support to import this person, we should be able to have you out on your ass in 2 wks or less.

Do you actually have an educated response to dispute my post? I welcome all counter arguments in a thoughtful manner. The fact of the matter that you can't even gather a proper argument tells me that you are not educated in the fundamentals of economics. Instead of whining and complaining about how everybody else is taking your job, why not educate yourself further in order to better compete in this world economy?

I think his argument is valid.

Unregulated capitalism does not faovr our national security, moreover pure capitalism doent work.

Right...
So I should leave money here with you rather than send money back home to help my family members.

Nobody is saying that

I'm saying the US should not allow people like you to work here......but since you are already here, then do what you want, its your money. The number of H1Bs is ridiculous and its gotten to the point where it hurts our economy to spend money on foreign workers who dont help circulate the money within our own country.

I speak for those LIKE YOU who already have their mind made up to make the money and run. I'm all for immigrants who choose to migrate and settle here and improve our country.

Ok, Mr. Hugo Chavez.
When are you going to ban NJ citizens from working in NY since they take their money with them back to New Jersey? Are you going to garnish their wages till they settle in NY? Are you going to ban them from coming to NY?

When are you going to ban MD/VA citizens from working in DC since they take their money with them back and don't spend it in DC?

You expect immigrants to come to America and stay there indefinitely?
As long as I get my degree here, I don't care whether the US grants H1-B visas or not.
You can't take my talent away from me once I've already earned it.

The problem with your comparison is that there is a much greater chance that money will circulate amongst the states as opposed to money circulating between India and the US.

I apply for mine in a couple of weeks, you'all wish me luck 🙂

I better get it this year. Last year they received like 150,000 applications for like ~75,000 visa. They had to do a lottery, for the people who didn't get it ... they lost the job and got the boot. Good thing I can always go back to being a student....nothing wrong with either.
What pissed me off the most last year is, they gave visas to people that got degrees somewhere else and barely speak Engrish. I felt like I should of got some priority since I have been spending my money here and paying taxes for 7 great years.
But again who cares what I think. They got the visa and I didn't.

hi thar ... welcome to the club! I'm continuously bowled over by some the people who get H1s - dude I met last week could barely speak english & barely qualified to do his job. Yet, he got approved on his first shot while others like you & I, been here for several years in good standing, are made to jump thru more hoops than at a dog show!

I thought you were already here illegally...overstayed a visa or something?

THAT should automatically disqualify a candidate from consideration...and an automatic (and immediate) deportation.

I would never overstay a visa... why? why stay when I am told to leave?... I can't afford to just be here and not work or go to school .... what is the point... I rather be home with my family enjoying the weather and food 🙂

But that's funny that you thought I was illegal ... you thought I was working illegally too ?

I know the feeling man, it makes me sick. I have done every got damn thing right, the LEGAL way .. and they just make it a nightmare for me. Now I see people fresh out of the boat straight up H1-B ... how the fuck you go find someone in god knows what country, give him a visa, and make people that have been here for year wait another year.
The other thing that pisses me off is, all my friends I came her with have green cards, but no degrees. They are just here living the American dream on credit cards.

Are you applying as well this year?

It is things like this which contribute to giving the H1-Bs such a bad rep in the first place. The numbers don't lie of course and there are problems which occur for many various reasons, but I can guarantee you that if the vast majority of H1-B's were dedicated to do everything right and really work on their language barriers (including accents) then they would be viewed very differently. More social skills on average would help too. Most of the H1-Bs I have worked with are really lacking in the social department and while it may not be a part of the job description it is very critical when it comes to the value of the employee.

Also, "the American dream" will never be lived on credit cards. Unless your friends are doing a great job making payments, all they have to look forward to is debt or possibly even bad credit.

You mean like immigrants to America have been doing for the past 200+ years? Yes, I sure as hell do.

Dude one of them filed bankruptcy after a $40,000 debt ???
The other one just stopped paying the bills, and now lives back home like nothing ever happened.
They don't care to have good credit. They are not planning on living here forever.
They are my friends and all, but I hate what they do ... makes us look bad.

I expect immigrants to come here if they want to make new lives here. I do not expect them to come here and treat our country like a cash register and then just leave. If they want to come here to make new lives, work hard, and then realize much later on that they were truly happier back home or believe that a different country may suit them better then that is fine. They should leave. Otherwise, I feel they are just leeching and abusing a system which was not designed for the purpose that they are using it for.

Why the hell else would you emigrate to a country? I think most immigrants who live here for any significant length of time DO stay here forever. I can only imagine that the guy who said he was going to live here until he retires then move back to his native country is going to die a virgin. The ones who come here and get married and have kids usually stay here.

Thankfully, I'm done - but I set a record of sorts trying for 4 years straight. Keep in mind that I speak English pretty well, have 2 bachelor's degrees from American universities, working on a masters/MBA, job offers that offered me considerably more than the "prevailing wage", never late on my taxes and my worst "offense" has been a traffic ticket.

Yet, they'd rather give H1s away to fobs

go figure ...

I think at this point most of those waiting "in line" have already stopped caring. Why bother with a broken system that rewards illegals and leeches and punishes the legits & hard-workers?

A lot of the international students whom I knew have already moved onto greener pastures like the EU or home to China / India. The decent ones pulled their investments and left quietly - other raked up massive debts ($60-80k+) based off their good credit till date and poof!

I knew them all my life. I don't know ... they're from good families and all, but its like they come here and realize... oh it is not my country, who cares. Their attitude is different... they just want to take and give nothing.
I don't believe that... I tell him all the time the least you can do is be a good cab driver, be nice and help people in NYC. He can't even handle that... well he is gone now ...lol good riddance, everyone is better off.... but he is still a friend back home.

Yes, the system most certainly is the core problem. This is very much why I argued earlier in this thread that while we have put up with that system for some time now, the current state of our economy is a good reason to try and tie up loose ends where ever we can. While fixing this portion is not going to turn the entire table, every little bit helps you know?

What about immigrants who want to do all that they can for their family and later plan to retire back in their home country when they turn 65?

Do you also feel that Dell opening a customer service center in India puts more money in the US economy than them hiring H1-B visa workers to do that here? Why or why not?

Ok I'll show my ignorance... why would you require an H1B instead of considering local candidates?

pretty illegal to do.
