Has anyone gone from a Windows 7 machine to an Apple and thought OMG...

Go for it!

$70 + tax is a lot of cash for me, even if it's cool and useful, and I can't use my usual excuse for not buying something "ehhh, maybe it'll go on sale next week so I should probably wait..." Apple shit never goes on sale.

DAMN APPLE for making a cool product and FUCK Best Buy for being open until 11 for "holiday hours"

If that's what you refer to as "how to properly maintain a laptop" then you have no idea what you're doing.

Everyone says you're an idiot and I didn't believe them until you just removed all doubts. I haven't done any maintenance to any of my laptops in years and they just - work - regardless of your definition of maintenance. The newer ones work even better.

I feel dumber having interacted with you.

Everyone also knows that I don't give a shit what they think of me, please make note of this, come back, regroup and try posting without some petty little insult about how your IQ is some how linked to the people you have conversations with 😉

On a side note, Laptops don't require as much maintenance as desktops, and as an operating system windows rarely (if ever) in my experience just works.

Oh really? Do explain how or why laptops don't require as much maintenance as desktops.

What didn't "just works" for you with your machines, besides your own deficiencies? But I do understand your desire for simplicity, when you're stupid just keep it simple.

Sorry, but my previous post mentioned IDGAS about your little insults, please don't waste my time with them. Next insult post I'll just add you to my ignore list and move on.

Laptops don't dent to have their internal hardware upgraded by the user.

Every windows machine I have ever owned, has crash either BSOD at some point or some stupid error message, that I have had to "fix" or one of the other millions of problems that windows is afflicted with.

Don't get your panties in a bunch, I was just having some fun at your expense. You're nobody, don't ever forget that. I'm now done with you, resume your inane trolling, I grant you that permission. Go on, don't disobey me boy.

Good bye. You sir are a moron.

At least you follow orders. I wonder if you can operate a lawn mower properly... Anybody wants to wager that necktard will screw that up too?

There is only one thing that Apple users really have to remember whenever getting into any discussion like this.

It is easy to make sure "everything" works when you limit "everything" to a narrow band of hardware and software.

the only problems I have had with my machines is usually when I try to get some 4th party app or piece of hardware to work on it.

No, not just a regular 3 button mouse, but a 10 button Logitech and having it work correctly on a beta browser or with an Adobe product that has its own ideas about interfaces.

The very thing that gives PC's their advantage is also their Achilles heal. They will run just about anything and work with just about anything. When you have dozens of companies making even the baseline product, it is easy to see where you can get problems with compatibility down the line.

I will ask this though. I have a feeling it is how I think it is,but I am not sure. At any given time, how many lines of Apple laptops/PC's are out? How many different architectures do they use at any given time and how many times have they switched? I would think they only hvae two, maybe three that are "active" and being developed at any time, and given their profit margin, plenty of time and money to make sure they only sell what they know will work at prices that they have a stong hand in setting.....

So, is Apple evil? Nope. They sell a good product. They over-hype and over-market it (and consequently over-price it) but there is no denying they are doing all three things right to command such a healthy profit margin.

The mere fact that people are willing to defend it almost religiously shows that they have tapped into the emotional key that is not serviced by the PC market.

Unfortunately, that same key will prevent them from World domination, no matter how many years they keep donating machines to educational institutions (also brilliant). They have made the perfect niche for themselves, but that niche also makes it hard to take them seriously for any professional application.

It is like a pink Porche. It may be a kick ass machine, but no self respecting man is going to ride in one and think his masculinity is safe.

That's not true. Apple computers are used abundantly in the creative profession. Just because graphics designers, sound engineers, photographers, etc don't work in banks does not mean they are not professionals who use professional applications.

Perhaps I am in minority but I don't give two shits what people think of me using Apple hardware. I work in IT and earn a living supporting Windows OS and hardware it runs on. When I am at home I do not want to do tech support, and Apple products allow me to do just that. Well worth the premium I am paying.

This.

I'm a network admin and I use OSX for just this, if it makes my life / job easier I'll pay for it.

I like them both for different reasons, Mac for it's UI simplicity, as well as excellent video and image editing software and PC for it's wide range of available software and games.

What I don't see on either platform is a significant maintenance schedule. I haven't had issues on a PC or Mac that required that I do a lot of maintenance to fix. Not since the windows 98 days have I seen this on PCs. Granted I keep auto critical updates and AV definitions updates running, but other than that it just works.

Friends and family need Macs though, there are too many settings in a PC for them to play around with and mess up. I switched them over to mac, and it's much better now, the less they can modify with the OS the better.

You can modify anything about OSX, and there are just as many settings to play around and mess up, so be careful thinking that. You can however set a password easily enough so they can't.

i run OSX, Win7, and Ubuntu.

they all have their own pros/cons.

just use wtf you like and gets the job done. i use each os for different needs.

Yeah, thats what I meant, easier to lock down. Even with windows limited user profile, there is still way too much that they can screw up.

True enough. It's definitely easier in OSX to lock everything up, but it is doable in Windows with a little effort.

Yeah, if you consider going through group policy settings or writing reg entries for each thing you want to lock people out of a little effort.

Granted windows 7 is a little better with UAC, but still not as simple as Mac to limit use. But Microsoft prides itself on this, in the sense that you can essentially modify anything in the whole OS by using the registry/gpeditor. But there a LOT of options in there, and you need to know specifically what you want to lock down, you can't just say "lock everything down" and call it a day.
