Dual-format players may make it possible to enjoy both types of discs with no worries, but at the moment, that option is limited and cost prohibitive. However, seldom in the consumer technology sector have we seen an amicable co-existence such as this. We happen to feel that Blu-ray will be left standing when the dust settles, but we also feel that the race is still just beginning. Whatever the case, we hope that the consumers will weigh their options carefully and make the decision that will provide them with the best entertainment value.

first off everyone over at HardOCP are all JACKARSES!!!!! a LOT of the crap they are is just bloated full of personal opinions, favortisim, and fanboyism. Theay constantly argue, fight with other more legit sites, and pass their opinions off as fact.

that being said yes it is still the beginning, no one knows, a lot of people are backing both media. i personal hope HD-DVD will win and own an HD-DVD player. Just today i went out to buy Children Of Men, which was released March 27th, and found that it was not available in BD just DVD and HD-DVD which also includes the DVD version. However though i own an hd-dvd player AND the HD version contains the SD DVD version as well on 1 disk i purchased the standard DVD instead. Why? 1) DVD is $17.99, HD-DVD/DVD is $34.99 !!!! costs WAY too much and I do not want to purchase just HD-DVD in case BD does win and I have to switch over and be suck with a bunch of HDDVD moves i can't play unless i buy a combo player. The Departed though i purchased on SD DVD special BB edition AND in HD-DVD/DVD cuz i had a viewing at my house

I'll sit idly by and see which device turns into the next $1000 doorstop.

Look at the Beta and Laserdisk early adopters.

I hereby demand that no-one ever refers to DVD as "SD DVD" in a kind of twisted rebranding intended along the lines of PATA/SATA.

Thanks in advance.

You see that's where Blu-Ray has an advantage right at the moment, if you get a PS3 that comes with Blu-Ray even if HD-DVD ends up the winner 3 years down the line you'll still have a good console with cool games as there will be plenty a cool games for it in 3 years.

I have it all figured out. After Toshiba drops the prices on their HD players next week, it shouldn't be too long before they show up on e-tailer sites for $250-$300. I'll buy one. Next, I'll grab a PS3 from my local craigslist for $400. There have been several of them in the past week alone. Total outlay: $700. Then... selling my current DVD player and PS2 should recoup $300 of that. So... a total of $400 to play both HDDVD and Blue-Ray... sounds good to me.

When DVD's first hit the market big time, I could regularly get them for $3, $5, $8 a pop using coupons and stuff online. You can still pick up hundreds of titles for the $5-$10 range if you look in the right places. And that was with a couple hundred dollar DVD player. A few years in you could get the players at Walmart for $30. And you didn't need a $2000 TV to really get the most from them.

That's just not the case with this generation of media. The disks are twice as expensive as DVD, the players are 10x-20x more expensive than DVD, and you need another $2000 in high end TV equipment to make it worthwhile.

Blu-ray/HD-DVD is just really an answer to a question that a huge number of people never asked.

I'm rooting for BluRay myself. I have a great and desperate need for its large storage space.

Once BluRay computer drives fall below 200, I'm picking one up. So, likely some time in 2008.

Well, imo here in the Netherlands blu-ray will have the edge.

Standalone HD DVD and blu-ray players are a rare sight in retail stores.
Now that the PS3 is finally available, It wouldn't surprise me if within 1 month the number of blu-ray players (=PS3) will be larger than the number of HD DVD players (incl 360 drives)

Edit: Well apparantly the addon for the 360 was just released here around 1 month ago...
My guess is that blu-ray players now already greatly outnumber the HD DVD players.

I think we all know that most of the people who support HD-DVD are either blind Sony haters or blind MS supporters.

Factually, Blu-Ray is a better technology.

Quite honestly, I don't care which format wins because I won't be buying anything until prices drop significantly overall; this means players, media and TV. For watching the boob tube and movie rentals, current low-priced technology is just fine me.

Getting $300 for a used PS2 and DVD player? Are you looney?

You can get a brand new PS2 for $130 and a brand new DVD player for like $25.

Which one will win first:
The one that gets a burner that costs under $100 and the one with media under $1.

I doubt that will be a factor over all though it might be a factor in your decision.

And even if you have a progressive scan DVD player, that's maybe what, $100-150 new? At best, MAYBE, $200. you'll get for your stuff. Unless your ps2=ps2+tons of games.

I don't see the need for either new media. I'm perfectly happy with DVDs. If a movie is too big for a DVD, then a dual-layer DVD should handle it. I'm still amazed at the picture on my HDTV when I pop my $10 LotR DVD into my $40 DVD player.

Factually Beta was better technology. $$$ talks and HDDVD is cheaper.

True, however my DVD player is a high-end one that would easily fetch $200 used. Add to that a roommate who wants to pay me $100 for my PS2 and there's my $300.

Factually, in what way - it has a higher storage capacity? Thats meaningless when you realize that theres absolutely no issue fitting a 1080p movie on a HD-DVD.

They both get the job done, I support whichever one is cheapest, which right now, considering the "war", is neither.

Its far too early to call a winner in the war, because its far to early for the vast majority of consumers to care. Early adopters arent going to decide this, and neither is the PS3.

And we all know the eventual outcome, - dual format players will be standard, because there won;t be serious sales of HD movies until then. The same thing happened with DVD+/-R, and the end result is that no one really cared either way, because they were essentially equivalent.

Why does one have to declare that EITHER of this formats will ultimately catch on? I don't think either will. Its like choosing whether DVD-Audio or SACDs will dominate the music market a few years ago. The answer is undeniably neither.

With the HVD discs coming out within a year or so, its going to leave both Blu-Ray AND HD-DVD discs quickly obsolete and I just don't see most people being willing to shell out the money to make an incremental upgrade over DVD (its not the same league as the upgrade from VHS->DVD) when something that is potentially a HUGE upgrade is right on the horizon.

There's no question that DVDs will be obsolete at some point, but it won't be because of Blu-Ray or HD-DVDs
