Ghosts'n'Goblins for NES was almost impossible. I played that game hundreds of times when I was a kid and never came close to seeing the end.
If I remember correctly there was no option to continue. You had to start from the beginning every game (I think you had 3 lives plus one extra life at a certain score). And there were these demon things that were extremely difficult to kill.
