Most of the old Nintendo and Atari games are the hardest because the controls usually sucked and they didnt really seem to believe in playtesting.
It had very little to do with "challenge" and more to do with "futility".

Some of them were quality challenges though, like Super Mario Brothers or Castlevainia.

Would have been nice to see a list of .. i dont know.. REAL games.

Maybe its just me, but i've never even heard of any of the 5 on this list. And flash games added to the list? Kinda seems like cheating.

Anybody can make a flash game too retardedly hard to play.

Me though? I always though Ghosts N' Goblins and Monster Party for NES were insanely difficult. Battletoads being a close 2nd.

Yeah, that didn't really seem like a serious list. As far as hard mainstream games that people actually play, I think Ninja Gaiden and Contra often come up.

When you guys talk about Ninja Gaiden which one do you mean? The reportedly insanely hard modern one, or the NES one which was only hard if you lost the jump and slash special?

Hard games are gone... now adays u can only see walk in the park games...

like games in where u never die... lol... good idea in the end.. because if u die.. u probably end up loading the last saved game or using the quick load key.... so actually they get rid of that annoyance by adding no death option lol!

the new way is like.. get in.. kick the ass of some computer mobs, get reward, get the satisfaction of wining and get out... the rest is plainly an anxiety generator and annoyance...

but if u ask me... i think ... (no one) have been that hard that i can remember...

The newer ones for XBOX, PS2, 360, and PS3. And Ninja Gaiden II (the 360 one) is supposed to be even harder.

Actually, it's the hardest game that doesn't make you want to tear your face off. You want to keep playing. You want to be better than the game. Not because it's a challenge, but because it's a weird blend of awesome and a challenge, unlike IWTBTG.

lol @ the simple fps noobs complaining about WASD :)

Operation Flashpoint was pretty hard, but once you got used to it - it kinda grew on you. Otherwise, Falcon 4.0 - I'm still lost to this day :)

Eh, I heard that number two was "cheap hard", and no one likes that.

As a kid I did everything up to the sound stage, just couldn't figure it out. I'm pretty shocked at how far I did get. It wouldn't be a stretch of the imagination for somebody to have picked up on all the clues and completed without a guide. They indeed provided you with all the information you needed to complete the game.

As mentioned, too often a games difficulty is only based on poor design that takes a certain measure of skill and luck to overcome. Any success that cant be repeated 90% of the time relied too much on random gimmickiness (is that word?) to add challenge.

And then there are arcade games, intentionally made to steal your quarters. Making a game near impossibly hard at the very end so that you keep force feeding your quarters to it thinking one more will let you finish the game. Next thing you know you've put in $10 worth of quarters and only have that end boss to half life...These aren't gimmicky, but made so that only through buying many lives could you wear the boss down and beat the game.

I actually thought Myst was pretty easy. The hardest part was noticing that stupid little panel you had to click (or climb thru?) in the tunnel to get to the underwater aquarium part. Sorry memory is a little vague since i played it awhile back.

I thought "Seventh Guest" was a lot harder / impossible. Also Infocom's Zork series was hard as hell when i was 10 or so. Never got too far before losing interest and getting frustrated.

In that regards, Dangerous Waters. There's nothing like needing a 600 page instruction manual to get started. It's also a newer game than Falcon 4.0.

Another vote for Falcon 4.0. Not only was it impossibly hard to keep the plane in the air, but it was almost as hard to keep the game running as it was originally designed for 3dfx hardware. I lost track of the sheer number of official, semi-official and unofficial patches it needed to keep it working.

Also, all adventures ever (except for Broken Sword). I could never get anywhere in any of them, e.g. the Zork ones. Still remember the line in one of the Zorks where it mockingly says in response to your efforts 'Yeah. that's right, just try combining every object with every other object - something's gotta work'. That's the point where I gave up on adventures.

I did. I was too poor/stubborn to actually buy a walkthrough and didn't have internet to get an FAQ. Man, I remember playing Myst, Riven, Seventh Guest... I remember seeing Seventh Guest running on a computer in a Radio Shack or something, had no idea what you were supposed to do except that once in a while when you walked down the hall you saw a ghost. Heh heh.

The author's description at the bottom made me

Those games are hard because of cheap little tricks the programmers used. I thought Mafia was a legitimately hard game, though. Especially the harbor level. All of the enemies in that game had just as much health as you, were usually better equipped, and there were LOTS of them.

Edit: Anyone remember OMF 2097? That game is damn hard if you turn up the difficulty and speed. The bots are actually decent at fighting.

I loved One Must Fall - it was one of the few decent fighting games available for the PC.
