Hardest games of all time

I knew IWBTG was going to be number one, honestly, I'm unimpressed, these games use the same techniques games like Megaman and Contra used to use to make the games difficult and that is CHEAP tricks (imagine the word cheap underlined on a giant flashing banner with fireworks in the background), only in much bigger scale, cheap=/=difficult.

The original Castlevania was the hardest game for me. After hundreds of attempts, I was never able to get past Frankenstein's Monster and Igor.

I can't think of another game that I had that I put so much effort into without beating it.

This.

BG2: ToB + Ascension can get brutal.

The sniper map on MOHAA was HELL (without saving / reloading and memorizing their locations).

Hell yeah, I had to reload a lot of times in that MOHAA sniper level...sometimes it was near impossible to see where the snipers were perched!

Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix on the hardest skill level (either "SoF" or "consultant"). 1 save per map, enemies do insane amounts of damage, and 2 shots takes your armor completely away. god, that was hard.

Elite commador 64 (1985?) Vector graphics HUGE universe with I think 3 or 4 others you could jump to. You had to dock your ship manually most of the time and it was hard.

As a kid, I could never land the plan in Top Gun on NES.

Yeah, I remember that being difficult. Unlike Castlevania, I did end up beating the game though (I think it was only 4 levels). You end up kind of getting a feel for landing the jet after a while.

Mike Tyson was another one that was insanely difficult, but I finally got him after dozens of attempts.

2-player Double Dragon III. One life bar. Every opponent could take out 1/3 of your health. Not to mention friendly fire.

Ascension was hard but that's because opponents were actually cheating at the engine level that would be like trying to play a strategy game where the computer has instant build and unlimited money.

They definitely don't make games like they used to. Now we have games like prince of persia where you never die. It's quite boring IMO. Sure there have been a few difficult ones within recent memory, but a lot of those are indie titles like the I Wanna Be The Guy game. I think it's due to the shorter attention spans of gamers which is a byproduct of design IMO. Developers seem to try and outdo each other in making the most easily accessible games nowadays, which generally equals extremely easy of extremely forgiving (PoP). Takes the fun out of it IMO.

Computer Chess. With today's powerful CPUs and a good chess engine, only a top class player stands a chance against a machine.

I remembered another one -

Ghosts'n'Goblins for NES was almost impossible. I played that game hundreds of times when I was a kid and never came close to seeing the end.

If I remember correctly there was no option to continue. You had to start from the beginning every game (I think you had 3 lives plus one extra life at a certain score). And there were these demon things that were extremely difficult to kill.

Just thinking about that game makes my blood-pressure go up. AAARRRRRGGH! I could never get past the second level. And every time you'd die, they'd rub your face in it by showing you how little of the game you'd completed.

Donky Kong was another, although that's more of a way of life than a game.

I'm playing GRAW 2 on PC now and finding it pretty hard.
