If you are going after pretty, check out my thread on SAO's.

I can't go in there because I don't want to drool on my keyboard any more tonight.

LOL. As much as I'd love a 1911 I think a Glock 19 would suit me just fine. If I tell my wife I spent 4 digits on a toy that makes less sense as a hobby than an automobile does I might have to find a new place to live.

I'm assuming the OP would be keeping this as a house gun, so if he did have to use it the chances are that it would be middle of the night, pitch black, half awake, possibly naked kind of conditions. If you aren't very familiar with your gun, undoing all the safeties will slow you down. A Glock is point and shoot.

That seems like a situation where a grip safety could keep you from accidentally discharging your gun. Grab your Glock wrong in the dark, and you might end up shooting yourself.

Plaxico Burress probably wouldn't have shot himself in the leg, if he had an XD instead of his Glock. Although a holster would also have worked.

which Sig?

Some jerk pointed out one of their SAO's to me and now I'm in love. But it will take me a bit to get that much saved up :(

You're the one that asked.

I was actually considering getting one of Novak's "the answer" installed on my S&W 9mm 1911 that I use for competition before I decided I would train with what I use and now only use my M&P or kahr at action pistol events.

I believe that if I keep everything as similar as possible, then nothing will seem TOO unfamiliar. Hence the complete lack of anything da/sa in my collection. DAO or SAO only. Even then, I've found I use my 1911 less as I don't want to have to remember the safety.

When you figure it out let me know?

I'm sure gun pron will follow.

Its going to be a bit. I'm almost done paying off my fees for my license and I'm making almost good money at work again.

Ah hell...maybe I'll just work 20 hours of overtime next week so I can buy something later this month...........

If you buy a non-collectible gun, buy it used.
I think it is stupid to buy a new Glock or XD for $550+, when used ones are ~$350 all day long at gun shows. (no tax, cash and carry)

I'm leaning towards an XDm myself...I shot both the XDm and glock and just really preferred the XDm for how it felt as well as how I shot w/ it. What I haven't decided is the caliber. I want to shoot the .45 compact but don't know of anywhere that has it near by to rent.

You're not really that far from me. Where do you go shooting?

Silver Bullet

Range time is only $10 for a half hour, they always have cheap ammo and they rent pretty much any gun they sell in case you want to try it out.

Looks like a nice place. A little out of my way to go often, but it'd be nice to have an indoor rifle range. I need to get my new AR out a little bit further distance and properly sight it.

OP, Have you thought about the Ruger SR9? I have a SR40 and love it. It does have a manual safety but when I carry it the safety is off. If it comes out for anything other than self defense the safety is engaged. It aslo has the trigger safety like a glock.

My XD coating isnt wearing off. maybe I got a good one.

I know the Winimac state park is a little drive from SB but they have a rifle range. Cost-gas to get there and ammo. You'll need your own targets

A couple guys at work have mentioned that one before but I haven't made it down there yet. I like how it has a 200 yd lane. Would be fun to try out my Savage 30-06 at that range and see if I can hit anything.

All you need is your own targets and fasteners.I think the rifle range is 100 and 200 .

Kinsbury range in Laporte is DNR run but they charge a fee. Not sure what it is. I can shoot in my back yard but max distance is about 40 yards.

I've been to Kingsbury quite a bit. They charge only $4 for however long you want to take for all ranges (rifle, pistol, and shotgun). The guy even has some decent seated throwers you can use on the shotgun side of things. If you have different types of guns you can spend hours there. Theres even an archery section right outside the range too.

It's really nice.

It has one rifle lane but it's not really the best place for that.

And no, not all xds have the coating problem. Mine did and therefore all of them suck :p

Yeah you go with your experiences. If mine ends up with an issue I'll probably dislike it too. As long as people make up their minds for themselves and not 2nd, 3rd, and 4th hand from randoms on the internet I don't care what they say. It's the uninformed blindly following others' stories that I can't stand.

True. My Para Ordnance 1911 was right around $600 and it's excellent. I've modified it a tad, but not much.

OP, have you actually went somewhere and tried to rent some of the more popular 9mm or 1911 pistols to see what you like? I saw people talking about ranges in this thread but nobody straight out mentioned having you go and try some of them out. It might've been mentioned and I looked over it though. I'd say that will be the best way to tell what you like vs. what you don't like. As far as 1911s go, there are plenty of them that aren't anywhere near 4 digits in price. The Ruger 1911 is slick and only runs around $600ish. You can also find some Springfield 1911s for around that price. Several of the gun community folks on youtube a few months ago highly recommended the Rock Island Armory 1911 and a quick glance on Bud's shows me that none of the RIA 1911s are over $500 with some as low as $410ish.

*EDIT* A quick search on Bud's shows the Ruger SR1911 out of stock at $749. I didn't realize it was that much. I guess the price has gone up since it seems to be popular.

1911 vs G19

A 1911 has two advantages over the G19, a much much better trigger and a bigger bullet. The G19 has more capacity, more reliable, easier to work on, and cheaper. A 1911 is going to be more accurate than a Glock but the Glock will be more accurate than you for quite some time.
