I have Vista and I'll likely pick up Halo 2, I think its an overrated game but its still not a bad game and I'm very interested in seeing Games for Windows - LIVE, Tray & Play and the other Games for Windows features that may indicate what is to come.

someone should counterpoint them all 😉

lol, do you really want to argue with someone who thinks 360s have better build quality than ps3s? 😛

no - i think my head would asplode at the sheer speed of his counter posting 😛

Wasting bandwidth? It's downloading the same amount of text, whether he put them all in the same post or different ones.

Hell, keep it up cmdrdredd, I like the cleanliness of separate posts. Plus, it's better if I want to respond to only one section, since I don't have to clean out all the other crap you would've put, just quote one of your posts.

apoppin, you have THE most annoying posts in all Anandtech, you know this. You certainly can't complain about someone else.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that you always say that your posting style mimicks how people communicate in real life, or some bull like that. It's more akin to teenagers chatting on messenger.

Yup - that's the main reason I bought one a long...LONG time ago..

However, the Xbox 360 would've been released even if HALO wasn't for the Xbox...

Xbox 360 failure rate lower than PS3?

Ha! That makes me laugh. A majority of people I know have had to return their 360s.

What about the guy who went through multiple of them? (I think like 7 to 9)

From what I've gathered, the PS3 has "little" problems. For example, my PS3's USB ports rarely work...usually if I plug the controller in before starting the console. They're almost bad enough to be called broken.

But they work great running Linux...? Yeah, I think firmware 1.6 screwed me up.

Which, btw, Sony called me back about it (after I called), but I missed it. They said they'd call back again, but never did. Grr.

Rant. Anyways, I'm pretty sure the 360 failure rate is much higher than the PS3's.

And I don't know why that was even brought up. Connection to Halo 2? Not really.

I wanted to spread this out over many posts to counter that guy, but the 15 sec limit stopped me.

/me predicts Halo 2 PC to fade away quickly

I haven't been in this thread for a few days so haven't read all the latest posts, but they don't have much to do with Halo 2 anyway. Going off-topic for a second: I personally like apoppin's posting style as it just has personality and whatnot. I value his opinions on games since he plays them a lot and contributes lots of details and stuff that you normally don't get from reviews. I think the idiots who post "i lik 2 type on teh internets!!!11111one" or whatever other phrase is the newest internet fad (i.e. chuck norris, that grom on here [confused] who loved SNAKESSS, etc) constantly or who quote the most ridiculously amount are much worst. Both types waste bandwidth, and the latter can't be skipped easily. And people who make post after post instead of using Edit are far more annoying that his personal style of posting, which can easily be skipped if it is so bothersome to anyone (since the posts are easy to spot! 🙂).

Now to what I wanted to post:

OMG!!! Gamespot has their review up, and in there:

"It's also worth noting that one of the gold tier abilities will be to play against Xbox 360 players in select games, but Halo 2 does not have this sort of cross-platform support."

NO cross-platform multiplayer?? I f****** swear that if you already have or pay for a Gold Live subscription, that PC players could play against 360 players. And that the Silver version meant PC-only multiplayer. I think even the latest Games for Windows basically said that in their big interview with MS about GFW and Live (though we know print is a little outdated, but still). Wasn't this the idea, or did they decide against this a while ago and I missed it? Is it just things upcoming games like Shadowrun and Huxley now that will be able to do that?

I thought some people only cared about Halo 2 PC to beat down 360 players. Though on that note, Halo 2 PC has auto-aim (like on the Xbox) for gamepad users. So it will be interesting to hear how Halo 2 PC games go down with mouse vs gamepad players. Gamespot's review says when they crank the analog stick sensitivity up, they felt that they did better than kb+mouse. Have us mouse elitists been wrong all this time??!

wow i was thinking the same thing you did.

if this made its way to XP and the bugs like auto aim and playing against 360 owners were gone, it would be a solid port.

hell no. why not crank the sensitivity up on the mouse, and for the love of god disable auto aim.

They may have broken M&KB support, very unresponsive or delay time to every movement.

MICROSOFT HAS ANNOUNCED that the Xbox Live network - originally for Xbox alone - will now be extended to the Windows platform and arrive with the Vista version of Xbox classic Halo 2.

PC games as you may or may not know are now branded Games for Windows over in the States - now, Windows gamers will be able to pick e-fights with console players and 'puter users alike. Microsoft has had significant success with its Xbox Live, and the Vole expects big things by expanding the franchise to Windows games too.

Peter Moore, Vole bigwig at the entertainment and devices division, reckons the benefits of expanding Xbox Live to Windows games are "twofold": "We're bringing together two communities that share a passion for playing online games, and we're enhancing the online experience for PC gamers who have long desired seamless game and voice connectivity," he said.

Existing members of Live will automatically get their hands on Games for Windows Live and will get to keep their friends list and gamertag for no extra money. Of course, Windows Live users will enjoy all the perks that Xbox Live users have had for years: in-game voice chat, "integrated achievements" and a whole bunch of Live dedicated servers.

The pay scheme will be the same as for Xbox Live - Silver memberships will be free, while Gold memberships will cost $49.95 annually. Gold members will have access to cross-platform gameplay, multiplayer achievements and multiplayer matchmaking with all their buddies.

Halo 2 for Volesta will be out on the 8th of May in the US and will be the first title to make use of the Windows Live service.

theinq's take^^

and from the Hor$e$ mouth:

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2007/mar07/03-14G4WandXboxLIVEPR.mspx
REDMOND, Wash. ? March 14, 2007 ? Microsoft Corp. today announced the extension of the Xbox LIVE® games and entertainment network to the Windows® platform, bringing together the most popular online console game service with the most popular games platform in the world. Debuting on May 8, 2007, with the launch of the Windows Vista? version of the Xbox® blockbuster ?Halo® 2,? Games for Windows ? LIVE will connect Windows gamers to over six million gamers already in the Xbox LIVE community. Then, launching in June, ?Shadowrun?? will for the first time connect Windows gamers with Xbox 360? players in cross-platform matches using a single service. ?UNO®,? releasing later in 2007, will also support cross-platform play between Windows and Xbox 360.

The launch of Games for Windows ? LIVE marks a major expansion of the Xbox LIVE service across multiple platforms, uniting gamers with a single identity, a single gamertag, a single friends list and a single list of achievements attainable on the Xbox 360 and a Windows-based PC. Games for Windows ? LIVE gamers will be able to easily find and play supported titles online with their friends across a Windows computer or an Xbox 360. As a unified service with Xbox LIVE, Games for Windows ? LIVE will be available in every country and region supported today by Xbox LIVE.

?Five years ago, we began building a service that now defines the bar for online gameplay,? said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. ?The benefits of expanding Xbox LIVE to Games for Windows titles is twofold: We?re bringing together two communities that share a passion for playing online games, and we?re enhancing the online experience for PC gamers who have long desired seamless game and voice connectivity ? it?s a win for everyone.?

Members of Xbox LIVE automatically receive the functionality of Games for Windows ? LIVE, using the same gamertag and friends list at no additional cost. For a single, unified service, the pricing of the LIVE services across both Xbox and Games for Windows is identical. In addition, Games for Windows ? LIVE introduces the best of Xbox LIVE functionality to please PC gamers, such as in-game voice chat, integrated achievements and dedicated servers. The offering of both Silver and Gold memberships will remain in place for gamers on the Xbox 360 and Windows PC. There is no cost associated with signing up for a Silver membership. Gold memberships will deliver the premium online network experience for $49.95 (U.S.) per year. Current Xbox LIVE Gold members will automatically have access to Gold features on Games for Windows ? LIVE titles.

I think they will patch this later on so that the mouse and KB functions much like any other PC shooter. Since you cannot play Halo2 on PC against Xbox players at this point there is no reason to make it slower on purpose.

Yeah probably, but there's a few people who got it for PC since they never had an Xbox and/or their friends all had decent gaming PCs. Now they can play the game which is quite good despite it's age and the nit-picking little issues people point out.

I've personally seen one Gamestop have every single PS3 sold at that store for the month of February returned to the store with issues stemming from broken DVD drives, failure to play movies, controllers that do not connect to the system, inability to play PS2 games at all (doesn't read them), imability to play Blue-Ray content, & systems that don't even turn on.

If you take into account the number of 360s sold vs the number of PS3s sold the failure rate is much higher percentage wise for the PS3. For a system that retails at $600 it's no good.

As interesting as post style is to talk about (not), lets return to Halo2 as I have a question or two.
Is MS saying that it will always be Vista only? I recall them saying Halo2 would never be ported to the PC, seems thats changed.
If I overdosed on my meds and actually installed vista on my machine, would Halo multiplayer only work on MS's pay to play network? I'm pretty sure the overdoes I'd need to be able to pay MS monthly would kill me, but just in case I lived through it I'd like to know the answer.
