As interesting as post style is to talk about (not), lets return to Halo2 as I have a question or two.
Is MS saying that it will always be Vista only? I recall them saying Halo2 would never be ported to the PC, seems thats changed.
If I overdosed on my meds and actually installed vista on my machine, would Halo multiplayer only work on MS's pay to play network? I'm pretty sure the overdoes I'd need to be able to pay MS monthly would kill me, but just in case I lived through it I'd like to know the answer.

Ok first things first as I know right now...

Vista is going to be always required to play Halo2 on the PC. I don't recal them saying it would never come to the PC. Halo2 multiplayer is free but the Gold membership gives you achievements from multiplayer games, some gold-only servers are available, and you get trueskill based matchmaking. This is basically a way to put people together in a game based on their skill levels.

I also think apoppins style of posting is annoying as hell. But every leap year or so he says something worthy.

back on topic, I will try halo2 pc when it gets hacked/patched to run on xp machines. If it does great, if not... oh well.

*shrug* it won't come to XP unless it's hacked to do so and when that happens I guarantee no online play with XP so what's the point?

singleplayer, maybe even a hacked coop over p2p

Well, to be honest the online play is the key point that makes Halo2 good. Single player is ok, but nothing special. LAN gaming is ok I guess.

Anyhow, I don't think it will ever come to XP at all...not even hacked.

Why do I think this? The game doesn't install if you put it in while running XP.

FYI, I've been playing this, never played the xbox version so why not. Not a great game, not a bad game, graphics are dated. 3d sound is horrible (if not non-existent). I'll be trying to find guys in front of me that are actually chasing me lol...stupid Vista.

Game crashed on me in the transition between two levels, and there's no way to access the "autosave" (which they don't tell you) so I wasted a couple of hours last night. You gotta love the message...

"Sorry. Please insert your original CD." Hit OK since it was already in there, select load last saved game, and it goes all the way back to the save point I manually made the day before. Lame.

Good thing is, this isn't one of those games that I was really excited about that didn't live up to expectations, it's pretty much just like "eh, whatever."

Someone could hack or redo the installer to ignore the XP check OR make a utility that overrides what the OS says it is when Halo tries to install...There are many ways around it.

hell no. why not crank the sensitivity up on the mouse, and for the love of god disable auto aim.

I have to have my mouse sensitivity way down to play FPS. And if there is auto-aim, I am FULLY unconvinced (I already pretty much was) to even try this game.
I already don't like Halo 2 Xbox. Halo 3 is 10x the game.
Also, only Vista was a dumb move I do believe.

i'm kinda curious as to why they are even bothering releasing halo 2 on the PC at this point. wasn't the xbox version available back at the end of 2004? I'm fairly convinced that there aren't a whole lot of people who really wanted to play Halo 2 but put it off for 2 and a half years until it was ported to the PC. Christ, halo 3 is only a few months off! Why is it that every other game on the planet can release on all platforms simultaneously, including PC, but halo takes years and years to essentially just bump up the resolution and map the controls to a keyboard and mouse?

Thanks for the info, think I'll just skip Halo and wait for TF2.

As cmdrdredd reports:

"They may have broken M&KB support, very unresponsive or delay time to every movement."

The mouse action for PC version Halo2 is absolutely the worst I have ever experienced!!!! This is either a poorly contrived port or indeed as suggested, purposeful gerrymandering of the mouse controls to cast the the Xbox 360 controller in a more favorable light. The mouse controls are "broken" and it will be interesting to see if Microsoft/Bungie will issue a patch to correct the problem. The regular PC Halo mouse control is far, far superior. If this problem isn't fixed, Halo2 for the PC and the subsequent sales for Vista/Xbox Live will die on the vine.

Now that I've had a chance to play Halo 2 on even grounds I can say with 100% certainty that Half-Life 2 > Far Cry > Doom 3 > Halo 2 is the ranking I would give to the FPS games of 2004.

*Awaits Halo 2 Vista's descent to the bargain bin*

I second this sentiment. I played it already (several times) on my Xbox and Xbox360, I won't pay more then $20 for it on PC, mainly to sit next to my copy of Halo 1 for PC.

Just wait a few months and it should be in the bargain bin at the rate it is going...

Wait, I just got here, your talking about the Xbox versions, right?

I just gotta say that Halo 2's multiplayer aspects alone (thats really all there is actually) put it ahead of the likes of HL2 and Doom 3, at least the Xbox versions (which I thought were degrading to the quality of the games on the PC). Far Cry was actually pretty good.

I dont think this will be good at all. I read some review and they are really giving the controls hell. It would be cool if they could somehow pare PC and Xbox players together and have them on equal grounds, but they are totally different controllers, and that will probably never happen.

I played some Halo 2 with a bunch of people for the first time in a while last night. It was just depressing. These people thought it was just the best shooter and multiplayer game around, but I was overwhelmed with the clunky controls from the gamepad, and the auto aim which was appalling in the way you really couldnt miss. I kept telling them to try out CS, but some of them tried telling me they had already tried PC shooters and they didnt like it, they then proceeded to tell me that they had really only tried Halo PC :disgust:, and me and my friends just laughed.

Im still hoping there will be some patch to make Halo 2 compatible with XP. I still would at least like to give this a try.
