Half Life 2 is still awesome

Played HL2, Ep1, and about a quarter of Ep2 again over the last week. Still the same rush I got before <3

And I'm sure as soon as the Ep2 credits roll I'll have the same disappointment as before that I have neither Black Mesa nor Ep3 yet.

I love the first one, but never did play 2 that much. I don't know what it is, but huge underground facilities are just awesome! I need to finish 2 though, how long does it last with all the episodes?

I agree. HL2 is still quite good, but HL1 is my favorite as well. Episode 1 is complete trash on the other hand, a total waste of time. It's just like a bad Half Life 2 B side, where they put in all the scenarios that either weren't good enough for HL2, or they reworked into HL2 in a better way. How it took them more than a couple weeks to complete is mind blowing.

Default FOV still makes me feel sick.
Isn't it 75? Which is what tons of modern shooters use, or even smaller for that matter. It can be changed anyway, HL2 has plenty of console commands.

For the record, I do think 75 is too small as well, but unless your getting sick from playing other shooters I wouldn't think that's the reason.

I'm still in the slogging through the canals on foot section of my first playthrough of HL2, and so far it looks better but is less interesting than HL1 (which I finally finished up this year).

So should I expect it to get awesome later on?

It gets better but certainly not awesome.. I still don't see what everyone's fascination with HL2 is. Must be the hype upon release because most of it is boring, same with Episode 1. Episode 2 is a little better.

Its nice to play a game without having to use 5 different menus and maps, 25 potions and 2 dozen guns, with 6 different kinds of ammo and a dozen different character attributes etc. HL2 was very elegant in its simplicity.

HL2 is amazing, I've played through it a few times. Still have not finished Episode 1 though, I got stuck in a spot and after several tries I gave up and never went back. :|

I felt the same way for a long time. I kept playing it halfway and giving up for some random reason. I finally stuck with it, and I find it to be a solid game.

I still wouldn't replay it anytime soon though. I'm still patiently waiting for Black Mesa Source to come, as I much preferred HL1's setting and story to HL2.

But yea, I don't find HL2 to be the revolutionary game that everyone makes it out to be. But a part of it is, is that I absolutely HATE the source engine. Sounds weird, but I've yet to like a source engine game (this includes CS:S, DOD:S, L4D 1 and 2, TF2, etc). Don't know why, but it just never felt right to me.

I've played through HL2 quite a few times. I could never get through HL1.

The awesomeness of the game is in the combined power of great visuals, varying gameplay, awesome sound effects, and storytelling. It's not that one moment blows you away, it's the complete package that merits it the title of greatest PC game ever.

That being said when I was storming the beaches of the alien prison I did have that "wow" moment, and it was awesome. :awe:

what sucks is they updated (ruined) the engine so a high end pc when the game was released can barely play it now

I played HL2 when it came out and thought it was good, but not great. I recently tried Ep 1 and it was boring. I gave up on it.

Half Life 2 + Cinematic Mod = Win. A fantastic game before the mod, but the artistic changes and higher texture resolution with the cinematic mod really wins me over.

I played the original in A3D 2.0 with headphones from start to finish. I will never forget that experience.

Swear to god I'm still looking for those spent 12 ga shells that clacked to the floor and rolled under my bed behind me.
