You need the Intel Matrix Storage Drivers. This is the AHCI driver for Windows.

I bought a floppy drive for my system so I could install from F6 when installing Windows. (XP x64, and Vista). Unfortunately, that's the only way I've done it at boot. With XP you can only install at boot from a floppy. In Vista, it's now possible to redirect the installer to a USB key or other external drive. *see below.

Conversely, you can install Windows first (with AHCI turned off) and then install the drivers afterwards. I've used this guide to enable AHCI after I installed Windows XP x86 before I had a floppy drive, and it worked fine. I used Windows XP, not sure, but I think Vista would be the same, just use the Vista driver from Intel.

*I think you can also use the above method to extract the drivers from the floppy image to a USB key or other device, for use with an F6 install at boot- from another Windows machine of course.

(By the way, the 2nd step in the post-install instructions can be very confusing. Basically, you need to use the command line (start/run/ cmd) navigate to the directory where the file in question is and enter the downloaded filename -a command.)

After installing the driver, you can then turn AHCI back on.

I would recommend keeping AHCI on for the sake of the Mac OS side. I notice much better drive performance in OS X with AHCI. In Windows, there's no real noticeable difference, just it's a PITA to keep switching it on and off when you want to boot into either OS.

Yeah, I have finally gotten vista and osx playing nicely. But have not enabled AHCI yet, when I had them dual booting the last time i enabled AHCI and it messed up my vista install. Maybe because I didnt install any special driver!? Both are fresh installs but Vista I let update, and installed drivers because the way it crashed last time.

I am going to look into enabling it now, Microsoft has a fix on how to do it in vista just by changing one setting in the regedit. But when I did it last time it booted once, then after that I would not load the desktop.

Thanks for the help, gonna reboot into vista and take a look at that driver and guide you linked.

Will report back...

I am running vista with AHCI enabled, only problem is that my DVD burning will not start in this mode. It is a Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170S I have searched for a solution but have yet to find one. Maybe my DVD isnt compatible in this mode? Seems weird since its a SATA burner...

i have also had 2 crashes so far... where this little screen popped up saying i had to restart. I guess macs nicer version of BSOD. Dont know if this is due to my overclock, which is very modest compared to the previous on previous mobo (bought gigabyte just for osx kept everything else). I am at stock now I will see if lock up comes back.

Seems USB devices are not working either :(, they get power from the usb but are not popping up, mounting. Did you need to run any usb fixes? EDIT: AFTER reboot usb devices are working... i noticed before reboot my DVD drive locked up (I saw the gay ass rainbow circle around the eject button when moused over). So I think my DVD drive is gonna cause problems in AHCI mode.

I think i am having mucho issues because of DVD burning not liking AHCI

Yeah if your OC is not stable then you will get kernel panics (lockups with the friendly shutdown screen).

Yeah very true, I had it prime/orthos 12 hours stable at 3.0ghz on last set up and was only running it at 2.4 today. Not sure if that was the problem but havent had any issues since, just installed vmware fusion running xp. Very cool stuff, there is a couple windows only programs i need.

The unity doesnt run quite as well as just keeping it inside the VM. Im having fun though. Though may need to download some keyboard extensions cause i miss windows keyboard stuff such as home and end buttons lol...

Oh hey, I cannot get that temp program to work, it gives me error about my sound???

Yeah Unity is neat but not so great in actual practice. Just make sure you install VM tools so you get the full feature set with the cursor, drag-and-drop, drivers, etc.

Temp program?

temperature monitoring program that was in your package. I cannot get it to work :(

Yeah I read that vmware is better than parallels have you tried/compared both?

Also being a complete noob to osx as i am, how do i open multi programs. Firefox for example, I have one window open and click the shortcut on the dock and all it does is direct me to the already open Firefox window. I know I can open a new window via firefox window but...

Did you install the full version of Temperature Monitor first? It will ask you to install a utility in order for it to work. Temperature Monitor Lite won't work unless you install the utility, either.

Yes, VMware is better than Parallels. I have both. VMware is faster and more stable than Parallels.

To open multiple windows, you can either right-click on the Dock icon and do a new window from there or else go into the menubar at the top (like File > New Window). There is also a keyboard shortcut (Command-N for Safari).

cool man, im having fun with leopard, but I am not convinced its as good as vista :(. I find it a lot harder to find programs, such as I needed a specific version of adobe reader but could never find it for mac :(.

Anyways does leopard allocate ram for common task like vista? It seems it doesnt by looking at activity monitor.

As useful devices, computers are really needs-based machines. If Vista suits your purposes better, then use Vista. It's like using a hammer for nails and a screw gun for screws - the right tool for the job. I'm not familiar with ram allocation on Vista, but I don't think Leopard does that. Not 100% sure what you mean though - does it pre-allocate ram for common tasks so that things load faster?

Its called superfetch it basically learns your behavior and adapts the rams cache to your behavior. http://futuremark.yougamers.co...showthread.php?t=72298 It significantly reduces the load times of commonly used programs because it already holds it in memory.
All I could find out about leopard is that it keeps programs in memory after you have opened them. So even if you close them they are still in memory. But havent found any information on adaptive behavior for leopard.

On another note did you see the new method of installing a retail disk? There are reports of people have 100% success with our board, including full ethernet support. BTW I havent had any issues with my Ethernet? I have shared and sleep and do not have to refresh the IP or anything.

Well that's interesting. I'm waiting for the Boot-132 method to become more mature before adopting it, but that's really good news!

Here are the latest benchmarks: (Q6600 OD'd to 3ghz with a 10k Raptor boot drive)

I'm running 10.5.3 too :)

Any news on 10.5.4 with a non-vanilla kernel?

I installed 10.5.4 on my computer, however, I did not use this guide. I have a triple boot of 10.5.4, Ubuntu and Windows Vista x64.

It seems to work very well, I have had no issues with it. Although my setup seems to work quite well with everything, once I got 10.5.2 installed, I haven't had any hardware issues or anything.

Leopard doesnt do any precaching, but it's not nearly as big of a loss because of the way programs stay in memory. Precaching would be the best of both worlds, but on the rare occasion that I reboot my hackintosh, I just pretty much click every program open and then a minute or so later, cmd-w everything. Precached. :p

What do you use to triple-boot with? EasyBCD or a bootloader? Or just separate drives?

Can someone care to point me to a simple 10.5.4 upgrade guide? I'm on 10.5.3 using the Kalyway combo update, but I'm still on kernel 9.2 since I was too scared to upgrade to 9.3.

You can go ahead and use the Vanilla kernel, it just makes restart/shutdown screwy. I'm working on getting some better kexts so that they work properly. Apparently if you have a Vanilla kernel on 10.5.3, you can simply upgrade to 10.5.4 via Software Update. I haven't tried that method yet, but I will this weekend. I'll let you know how it turns out ;)
