no way. that's just too hard.
size (as the first two responses that i see here) is just one of the problems.

Part of it is a matter of size. The womens clothing has no consistency at all in terms of sizing, having abandoned direct measurements in favor of the deliberately vague and ambiguous "size" structure. Different manufacturers/vendors have different ideas about what constitutes a "size", contributing to confusion. The goal of this, I believe, is to force women to shop for longer periods of time and to try more things on.

Would you women surprise your husbands by trying to fix that off-idle hesitation in his Jeep? That's the same reason we don't want to buy dresses - we probably don't know what we're doing and would likely upset you instead of please you because we'd screw up.

Paaw. Buy a girl a dress and all they will do is complain about how it's too big (that means you think she's fat) or not her style (if you cared you would know her style even though she will spend 12 hours in a f'ing store before she buys a dress then ends up returning it anyway -- BUT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO KNOW HER STYLE).

It's not that hard to figure out what size to get. Look in her closet and look at the sizes of clothes she wears all the time. Don't look at anything she never wears, it might be because it's too big or small.

If you get it wrong, you're showing that you're not smart enough to look at a tag in her closet, and if you get it too big, she'll think you think she's fat, too small, she needs to lose weight. Just get it right, and she'll think you're saying you like her just as she is. Women grow up with all sorts of societal clues that tell them that they're never good enough (too tall, too short, boobs too small, butt too big, etc.) Don't think otherwise.

No it is not. Either way you are screwed. Buying larger makes you look like you think she is fat, buying smaller makes her feel fat.
This man knows what he is saying. Much respect.

i agree Lola - i'd so love it.

come to think of it, much less dress for her, i would think two hundred times to buy clothes for myself without asking my wife first. it's just not worth it when i am excited about this new thing that i bought, and having her look at me with the "what the hell were you thinking?" kinda look.

ok, i think many guys are missing the point of this gesture.

buying a dress is much more personal and intimate. you're saying to your wife/gf: "i saw this dress and thought you would look beautiful in it." newsflash: women enjoy feeling pretty and being adored. buying a dress out of affection is NOT equal to buying some electronics as a gift or fixing the car as a favor.

Warcrow's GF kicks ass. That's the male equiv of getting a dress if you ask me.

No...I think you're missing the point. I don't squat in a field of landmines to take a dump, and I don't buy my girl clothes as a gift. Cost benefit analysis says "Bad Motherfvcking Idea!" and hits me in the face with a rolled up newspaper.

I bought my g/f underwear, a dress, clothes, a boustie and even a bathing suit and it all went over great. However, growing up I had a TON of female friends and went shopping with them to learn how. I also made DAMN sure I checked the sizes of the clothes she wears first. I also know clothes tend to vary from store to store so I cheched brand/size first as well. Everything I bought went over really well. I'd do it again anyday for any girl. No worries here.

Dresses are too finicky. Just looking at the sizes in the closet doesn't work. My fiancee wears an 8 from some places on up to a 14 from other places.

It's the thought that counts, to be sure, but I'm sticking with the tried and true method - "I saw this dress at <store> that I thought was really sexy. Let's go back so you can try it on!"

Women enjoy feeling pretty...

Sure, are you saying that men cannot enjoy earthly things as well? For many, it happens to be in the Electronics department - getting that bigger TV/Stereo, etc.

I know he wont cuz he hates shopping! i don't think it has anything to do with confidence thoguh

you think i'm THIS fat you miserable SOB!!!!!!!!! *whack*

If dress is too small:

I'm too fat for this!!! NoooooooooO!!!!!!!! *tears and more whacks*

If dress fits perfectly:

Wrong colors.....this so doesn't go with this, what were you thinking?!?! *returns dress*

it's a lose lose lose situation as you can see, :p

of course, if it was me, my wife would have to buy me a new motherboard, a new cpu, a new video card, a new sound card, a new speaker system, heck.. everything! cause my current setup is not for playing games.

and that, my female friends, is how difficult it is for a guy to buy the SO a dress. you have to consider the whole setup, and you can't just think about how i would like to play DOOM3.

i'm not saying it's impossible, of course some lucky girls somewhere will have the guy that will buy a dress for her, i'm just saying it's not me.

agreed. Buying a dress also entails buying all the other accessories including but not limited to Jewelry, Shoes, even nail polish. Leaving out a component is like giving a guy a kick ass system minus Heat-Sink Fan, or maybe ram.

Then you get the pleasure of taking them out somewhere to enjoy wearing said dress and crap.

well, not on the first date :)

i'm all for helping my fellow man get good lovin' from their women. i think occasional gestures like buying the wife/gf a dress is a good way to keep your woman feeling wanted. that's all.
