i know that people spend lots of money on collectible items that other people might think is worthless (i.e. beanie babies, etc...), but spending thousands of dollars on something that only exists in a fantasy world seems a little weird to me...

Meh, I played UO for 7 years. I saw houses for thousands of dollars, an account go for more than $10,000.... I think things have probably calmed down from what they used to be.
