LOL!
He probably spending $600 - $700 s month in gas and $65 a month in oil changes.
Ohh I almost forgot ~$75 a month in tyres.
Not to mention the $1000 a month that he has to save up to buy a new car every two years or so.

Good point. :Q
He sounds like a real dumbass... or he makes a lot of $$$.

edit:
In these circumstances I would think his company is offering some kind of lease for a company car or he might be able to deduct a big part of these costs.

notice he is electrical engineer, i bet the minimum pay at cisco would be around $100k.
also, he works there for 17 years.
if annual pay raise was written into his offer letter, say 5%-10%, he would be making $230k-$500k (this is probably too high).
that's before other bonus and option, it probably works out well for him, living cheap and earning alot.

Must set up picket lines of protest in front of his home and at Cisco.

He is one of the biggest reasons for the so called DEMAND and not enough SUPPLY of gasoline.

Shame on Cisco for contributing to the California smog and not enough gasoline because they are wasting it on commutes like this.

Aren't they a Technology Company specializing in equipment for the Internet, this guy should be telecomuting if anything.

Nothing but hypocrits that the Country should not stand for.

You go do that, we'll be right behind you.

Engineers don't make $500k a year.

And I don't think a starting salary at Cisco 17 years ago would have been $100k 😉 You basically gave him double credit for 17 years of inflation.

He's CLEARY an idiot because he's been working for Cisco for 17 years and DID not buy a house closer to his workplace before the run up in housing prices... If he would have purchased a home in the Bay Area between 89 and 96 not only would have he had saved all that time/money on commuting but what have seen the value of his house double...

This guy sucks at the life. 15 hours away from his family eveyday... I guess all he does at home is sleep.

Definately not an idiot.

If he has been with Cisco for 17 years since 1989 he is most likely a consulting engineer that reports directly to chambers. He probably only works a few hours a day in meetings and strategy. Not to mention what his stock is worth.

His name sounds familiar. I've probably met him.

-edit- oh, about the money. I'm sure he is close to a million a year or more if he is indeed a consulting engineer.

Mariposa resident Dave Given makes a 186-mile drive -- each way -- five days a week to his job in San Jose.

The electrical engineer has been doing that commute since 1989, spending seven hours every day getting to and from work at Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO - News).

Given is the "ultimate road warrior," according to Midas Inc. (NYSE:MDS - News) and drove home with its first-place prize in the nationwide search for "America's Longest Commute." Givens out-drove thousands of other entrants to take home $10,000 in gas money and a range of maintenance services and products.

"I have a great job and my family loves the ranch where we live," Givens said. "So this is the only solution."

On his long trek he said he listens to the radio, keeps his eyes on the road and drinks "a lot of coffee."

wonder what his gas bill is like per month. hopefully he drives a civic or something.

what a frakin idiot

17 years and he hasn't realized that he's wasting his life driving to and from work? That must be one HELL of a ranch and one HELL of a family.

He is definately an idiot. If he works a few hours a day like you say, he's spending much more time driving than working. He could live closer and spend like 1/3 the time working/driving. HIs daily free time would increase by 6+ hours...

Wont Cisco let him telecomute some days?My guess is that he doesn't do much real work at Cisco and is just there to socialize and drink coffee.

whatever. I'd take that position in a heartbeat to be the one setting and guiding technology for the entire industry and making a boatload of money. Then get home to my mansion/ranch.

If any one of you here were given the option to live in your dream house, make probably a million each year, all you had to do was commute for 7 hours a day - you'd all jump on the chance! And don't forget he surely gets plenty of vacation time.

Maybe that's how he gets enjoyment, doing the hard work so that everyone around him has a better life. And that makes him an idiot?

$75/month in tires? $65/month on oil changes?

That's 7,440 miles per month. Following the maintenance schedule of any newer "appliance" car, that's one oil change per month: $25.

Good "commuting" tires run maybe $75/wheel out the door and last 60,000+ miles if rotated and kept inflated. It's reasonable to assume that he gets 10 months out of a set of tires. $300 out the door for a set every 10 months is $30/month.

Uhm.....how does that trip take 7 hours? 😕

186 miles should take about 3.5 hours, if you consider traffic and stop and go city and rural/town driving. The stretch in between can be faster but the city driving and the actual commute should be about 3.5 hours.

Like I said..I can drive from here to the Cisco campuses (200.4) miles in 3 hours 😛

Well :cookie: for you. He does it everyday and running the risk of speeding tickets everyday is an expensive risk to take.

Wow, he should just live next to where he works and visit his family during the weekend.. he must have ZERO freetime let alone time to see his family.

Thought you meant he only drove one-way 186 miles
how was like how the hell does he get home/wtf, he its more/less miles to get home??

You're making a lot of assumptions about this guy based entirely on the fact that he has worked for Cisco for 17 years.

His name does sound familiar though - sounds like David Geffen.
