You don't live in CA do you? Living in San Jose would cost him a significant amount more than commuting I imagine.

Have you been to Mariposa? It's up in the mountains near Yosemite. I'm sure that the weekends are very relaxing there and maybe he likes it a lot there and doesn't want to live in a big city and wants his kids to have a smaller town life. Think about that?

I don't see your point. You are exchanging 50 hours of commuting time a week for the chance to spend a weekend in Mariposa? Where do you draw the line?

And, I was so scared that the 28 mile commute that I now make was going to take away my time from me.
