Mariposa resident Dave Given makes a 186-mile drive -- each way -- five days a week to his job in San Jose.

The electrical engineer has been doing that commute since 1989, spending seven hours every day getting to and from work at Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO - News).

Given is the "ultimate road warrior," according to Midas Inc. (NYSE:MDS - News) and drove home with its first-place prize in the nationwide search for "America's Longest Commute." Givens out-drove thousands of other entrants to take home $10,000 in gas money and a range of maintenance services and products.

"I have a great job and my family loves the ranch where we live," Givens said. "So this is the only solution."

On his long trek he said he listens to the radio, keeps his eyes on the road and drinks "a lot of coffee."

wonder what his gas bill is like per month. hopefully he drives a civic or something.

Yeah, once again the "I want money over spending time with my kids" has won out. So sad that if he spends 7 hours driving and 8 hours at work that he pretty much lives at work and sleeps at home. His wife likes it though, probably has the mailman over for some "tea"

At 50 weeks of work a year, driving 1,860 miles a week, with an estimate of 30mpg, that's 3,100 gallons of gas/year. At $2.00 a gallon, that's around $6200 a year. :Q

You don't live in CA do you? Living in San Jose would cost him a significant amount more than commuting I imagine.

And that's a low dollar amount for gas in CA 😛

Still cheaper than buying a house in Silicon Valley!

Home prices are so overblown in the area that people like him are the norm in the SV.

Well, i would imagine traffic would be the reason why it takes 7 hrs.

But that's just dumb. That's 35 hrs a week. I could do it if it was a telecommuniting job that you only have to come in like once a week, but no way would i do that every day. And the guy has been doing it for 16-17 years?!

A) Several does not usually mean 2 or 3. It usually means 4-5, but most commonly 5.
B) Who in this thread used "several"?

ok, he is prolly taking the 5 which usually never has track. the speed limit on the 5 is 70mph, you can easily do 80-85, prolly takes him 2.5 hours each way

7hrs is a bout right!

It's 200.4 miles from where I live to the Cisco Campuses in San Jose. I've made the drive in 3 hours one way.

gas is more like $3 a gallon, so total cost is around $9300 a year. If he rents a room in an apartment he probably would shell out $800 a month, for a total of $9600 a year. He can commute back on the weekends. I would probably do this to safe my sanity

He's CLEARY an idiot because he's been working for Cisco for 17 years and DID not buy a house closer to his workplace before the run up in housing prices... If he would have purchased a home in the Bay Area between 89 and 96 not only would have he had saved all that time/money on commuting but what have seen the value of his house double...

This guy sucks at the life. 15 hours away from his family eveyday... I guess all he does at home is sleep.
