What that mean?

Meaning the Russians have been shooting plenty of unarmed folks and if I was there and unarmed that might include me!

;)

Having said that I'll bet my odds of being shot by Russians in Ukraine would increase exponentially if I WAS armed!

russian willingness to kill civilians in addition to soldiers.

i swear captante is like moonbeam jr - similar writing style, but slightly more understandable.

Geez.... only "slightly" ?!? ;)

Guess i'll need to address my overall "sanity-factor" (or lack therof!) at some point here!

:p

I can see how some people would find that. However I know some math. I know some statistics. I know of bell curves and I know some people. I am but one data point on that bell and with that knowledge I got forth in the world and form opinions ever so vigilant effort to suppress my own subjectivity.

(for one subjectivity: I *love* guns. for one objectivity I understand they have no place in civilized society).
A statement made ridiculous by the fact there are no civilized societies.

Yes, what people don’t think about is a gun present in the house can turn a fistfight into a gunfight. Almost everyone walks away from a fistfight. A gunfight? Not nearly as many.
More fear of the self, what you do not know you feel.

The majority of overall deaths by gun are from suicide. I really want to see an increase in funding/research/support for mental health. I think that treating the underlying problem might result in an improvement.
Suicide is self-defense as the perp was aiming a gun at the shooter so… good shoot.

The guy who can’t understand why anyone would want to live in a different type of house than him has thoughts about what people do and do not understand about the human condition. At this point you’re self parody.

You drink?
How old is your son? He has access to the guns and ammo?
Love, emotions, alcohol -> stupid decisions.
You know that suicides from otc painkiller pill overdoses went down in Scandinavia after they limited the size on containers and the amount of containers you can buy in a day? The idea is that if you have to plan your suicide like that, you get to think about it in a non emotional capacity and then people dont. Problem with guns is that it's 0-60 in 0.0001 seconds.. No thinking required.
If we were really smart about it, we would keep a lock with a built-in breathalyzer on guns+ammo .. I betcha numbers would go down.

I drink a glass of wine every now and then. I never drink more than two glasses at a time and never get drunk. My son is 19 now but he has been shooting guns since he was 10. He does not have access to any of the guns I own but he has been around guns his whole life. He knows how to safely handle one.

Wth are you talking about? ;)
How to explain the last thing anybody wants to know... Hmmmm??????? Humanity is asleep living in a dream, upside down and backward from reality. Humanity has a disease, it is called self hate. We were all put down as children and made to feel we are worthless. No child can consciously live with that awareness so we armed ourselves by repressing it and adopting a false sense of self called the ego. We all conformed to some standard we imagine is the good according to our programming and the standards of those around us, this or that also sick culture. So here we are, unaware that we hate ourselves, terrified by our hidden feelings that our self hate is justified, that each of us is actually the worst in the world, projecting everywhere the world is out to get us, to reveal our darkest secrets.

The way out of this, of course is quite simple. All it takes is the will to die to everything you hold sacred and protects you from feeling this deeply hidden lie that we are the worst their is, our precious sacred shiny ego. Just die to that and you will be free. But don't forget that any intention in that direction, anywhere you go to improve your lot will be under the direction of that very ego, your savior from long ago. Be careful you don't trick yourself into thinking the ego will die of its own will.

You will have to face the fact that the situation is hopeless and nothing you can do will set you free. Then some external shock may happen that gets called by the name of Grace.

Good luck.

I have lived in this house for 23 years. There have been zero fistfights and zero gunfights in it during that time.

As I said, you can offer nothing to support your point of view other than the logic your experience tells you is logical. My experience is along different lines, confrontation with the experience of being. You can't understand this. Not your fault.

Sorry .... not running with "worthless" and I don't hate myself either. (even though I CAN be a real douchebag sometimes!)

;)

Thanks for wishing me good luck though! :p

Why?

Just because you are not at risk of suicide does nothing to eliminate the risk overall. (still I'm glad to hear it though!) Having a gun within reach makes ending yourself quick, easy and convenient.

Handgun ownership associated with much higher suicide risk

"Men who own handguns are eight times more likely to die of gun suicides than men who don’t own handguns, and women who own handguns are 35 times more likely than women who don’t"

~
Stanford Univ.

 Eight times what? 8 x 0 is still zero.

I love statistics… you can twist them to cause alarm in people where there is no cause for it.

If that’s what you think you should reread the thread.

Yep.... lies, damn lies and statistics. ;) (except there's no need to "twist" anything in this case)

As I mentioned in my post STRICTLY by the numbers this IS accurate information regardless of your feelings about it. Your individual case has very little bearing on overall stats. (just like one AB has very little effect on a players batting-average for the season)

When people have no answer to statistical evidence the most common answer is to claim statistics don’t count.

At that point the odds involved may not even approach that of smoking or driving your car without the belt, however, you see how not all gun owners is as responsible as you are right? So maybe it would be fair to prove that you are said level of responsible, license, whatever?
