But, the truth is: aside from BB/pellet guns, I have never even handled a real firearm, let alone actually operated one, and I would be scared to own one.

But I won't use my own fears as an excuse to infringe on the constitutional rights of others.

I also find that to be strange. The other day I was working on the President of our company's laptop, and he noticed that I had a pocket knife. He asked me about it and I showed it to him. To my amazement, he pulled out the EXACT same knife (S&W Tactical Millenium Run). We then started talking about guns, and he owns a Glock 17. He makes 200k+ easily...

I guess all gun owners are imbred rednecks.

I didnt say that crime does not occur where I live, but the violent crimes that are being referred to arent as common as many of you are making them out to be in the societies you are living in.

I live in the middle of the country with nothing but sleepy little towns and dairy farms for miles all around. A couple years ago some lady got car jacked by a man and was forced to drive her car to the state forest a mile and a half from my house, where he tried to rape her. I say tried, because she shot the bastard and got away. Violent crime can happen anywhere at any time, and all the police can do is clean up after it's done. No one has to justify anything to you.

This was in Ohio by the way, for those who wonder WTF happens here.

How about my father, an MD/PhD who specializes in cardiovascular surgery, who pulls down well over what you'd consider to be wealthy, and who also owns Sig P226-NAVY, a Sig P239 in .40S&W , a 1916 Springfield .30 '06, and a 12 gauge shotgun. He has his concealed carry permit, and most of the time when he is out of the house he is packing. So, I guess those who are well educated and/or are wealthy choose to carry guns...

The majority of Residents @ my hospital are anti gun, funny thing is, once they start practicing medicine, marry that trophy wife, get that $300K house, have a couple of kids & they start asking me about what kind of handgun they should buy.

I'd say 80% of the residents are anti gun, and 90% of the practicing physicians I know own handguns for personal defense.

My father was in the U.S. Army, served two tours in Vietnam, and was in the National Guard all throughout my childhood. He and his friends would collect rifles so I always grew up with guns around the house. I am used to the things; they don?t bother me in the slightest. Today, I am a gun owner. I have more than a few. The only one that I keep out is a shotgun in my bedroom closet. The rest are stored in a gun safe. I do not hunt but I do enjoy an occasional belt at the shooting range. For awhile skeet shooting was my hobby.

I agree. I will never have guns in my house while I still have kids in the house. In the areas I have lived, there is a low enough crime rate that I would be more scared of my own gun than of anyone breaking in to our house or threatening us. When my kids are all out of the house, I might want to have some guns. Some WW2 era rifles would be really cool. My wife may not agree though.

I agree. I will never have guns in my house while I still have kids in the house. In the areas I have lived, there is a low enough crime rate that I would be more scared of my own gun than of anyone breaking in to our house or threatening us. When my kids are all out of the house, I might want to have some guns. Some WW2 era rifles would be really cool. My wife may not agree though.

I'd rather have my children growing up *with* guns and learn to respect and use them. My youngest son was a better shot than I am with my .22 when he was 8 or 9 years old - and I've shot squirrels by shooting them through the branch they were standing on (I'm a good shot too.)

I tend to agree here too. I've lived in LA for 12 years and never owned a gun. Never felt the need to own a gun. Never felt scared enough to own a gun. And I don't live in Beverly Hills either. Crime happens, but it's rare when you consider the size of this city. I think you're more likely to be shot by accident owning a gun, than being shot by someone else with a gun.
